Bort - 2016-01-25

I don't know, those are some impressively white crowds.

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-26

Iowa's something like 90% white so it makes sense to use the whitest crowds for this ad.

infinite zest - 2016-01-26

Yeah it fits Iowa perfectly. I've only been there once for a wedding and it's all hippie boomers or republican boomers, and all the kids who want to get out of Iowa. And that was just my experience in a weekend. The idea of the ad showing a second or two of the Killer Mike introduction would be cool, but they'd be asking "who does he kill?"

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-27

Worse yet they might listen to some of his music and not understand the artistic license and more complex subtext involved in, for example, a song that's superficially about breaking into a rich white persons house and shooting their dog in front of them before robbing them.

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-27

Maybe I'm underestimating Iowa by assuming that most of them wouldn't really viscerally understand that for some people in some places, that sort of thing is what the police do.

Anagramother - 2016-01-25

Bernie's grown on me. I wish he was 8-10 years younger, he seems a bit a frail for the burdens of office but seems more statesman than performer which is encouraging.

Hooker - 2016-01-25

Yeah, they said that about John McCain and he's clung white-knuckle to life over the past eight years.

Dr Robot - 2016-01-27

Yeah age is only a deal breaker with you people when it's the opposition, huh? Mooks, definition of.

15th - 2016-01-25

I didn't think he stoop to that. Fuck, that was brutal.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2016-01-25

do american democrats realize that electing an avowed socialist for president will guarantee zero support from congress for any moderately progressive bill lest said congressperson wants to get tarred as a commie and lose their seat in the next midterms? just curious

"The lament that no Congress will stand for a Sanders agenda takes as its central premise that a right-wing Congress is now a simple fact of American life."

how is this premise anything near incorrect

TheOtherCapnS - 2016-01-25

Nikon - 2016-01-25

The creepoid knuckle-draggers losing their seats in Congress is another part of the revolution that follows.

Bort - 2016-01-25

Shanghai - this Democrat does, and sees Sanders as more of a pandering career politician than a straight shooter. I think he's sincere about wanting single payer, but now is the worst time to push for it, seeing as Congress is arguably more hostile to single payer now than it ever has been. Which incidentally has everything to do with a lot of Bernie supporters sitting out 2010 and 2014, that's some real smart thinking guys.

And, single payer isn't even the right battle to be fighting right now, since the big problem is that medical costs are out of control. It's medical costs that killed Green Mountain Single Payer in Bernie's own state back in 2014, but of course that's something Bernie doesn't like to talk about, because that would mean admitting that single payer isn't a magical cure-all. (What we need is to start regulating doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and especially for-profit hospitals to bring prices to a more reasonable zone. The ACA reined in medical insurance pretty well, now we need to do something about medical costs.)

If Bernie were being honest with his followers, he would say to them: "guys, there's not a damn thing we'll be able to pass until you fix Congress. Let me be explicit, YOU have to fix Congress by voting the Republicans out. It's going to take several election cycles and you're going to have to vote even when you're not totally stoked sometimes, but that's the only way to do this. Once that's done, perhaps some politician can push single payer, but it won't be me because I will have died of old age by then." That's what an honest politician would say, and Bernie won't.

Bisekrankas - 2016-01-26

So, basically 'we're not going to be able to do shit, so let's not even try' yea that will get him elected for sure

Shanghai Tippytap - 2016-01-26

This is what I don't get, Bort. What you guys need right now is to lock in your gains, and have red staters realize that their lives are, to some slight degree, a tiny bit better under the expanded social programs they're often convinced to fight so hard against. That will help to ease the republican stranglehold on the ill-informed.

I realize that a lot of the youngins who are throwing their lots in behind Bernie weren't alive or particularly cognizant during the "why do you hate America" Bush years, when the country was whipped up into a fearmongered frenzy and congressional democrats had to toe the line or lose their seats, or the early Obama years, when the president was immediately tarred as a communist who wanted to force everyone to get gay married at gunpoint. The problem was never that America had elected a president who wasn't 'left-wing-enough', but that America generally lacks sufficient support for left-wing programs. This needs to change through small, incremental victories; Not electing a zealot who can be written off so easily as a kook. This is the equivalent of dropping a frog into boiling water.

Also, it isn't like Obama didn't want a single-payer option in ACA, but he was consistently denied the clear congressional majorities he needed to put anything like that through. Do democrats remember this?

kingarthur - 2016-01-26

You can't fix Congress without fixing the electoral system. But, Citizens United.

You need single payer several decades ago, but the electoral system and the Democrats are JUST AS complicit in selling you the people out on that one as the RNC.

I don't see how blindly following the establishment Democrat line is going to solve jack or shit.

I'm willing to vote for Bernie in the primary though I'm 99% certain the DNC will not allow him past said primary and then start to guilt trip the DNC faithful into browbeating everyone to vote for Hilary.

Not me, I'll be voting Green for third party ballot access.

Bort - 2016-01-26

Bisekrankas - can you think of any strategies Bernie might try other than utter defeatism and completely lying to his supporters? Any at all?

Shanghai - the big problem is that Republican appeal is, at its heart, based on racism and xenophobia. All they have to do is persuade their audience that the Democrat is going to sell out whites in favor of minorities,. and that's what their voter base responds to. See the rise of Donald Trump, and his very naked appeals to whiteness.

As for what Obama wanted in the ACA, I'm pretty sure Obama learned from the failure of HillaryCare in 1993, when the Clintons drafted an entire health care bill and then charged Congress with passing it; the bill never even made it out of committee. So instead, Obama let Congress discover for themselves what they were willing to pass. Considering how narrowly the ACA passed -- 7 votes in the House and 0 in the Senate -- Obama made the right call by staying out of it.

kingarthur - Congress can be fixed just by voting, which is the one thing the Left refuses to do. Teabaggers are pretty good at voting, though, and so they win. Citizens United has some impact on things, but mostly it means they can buy ads that might influence the undecided; Citizens United has no impact on those who have already decided who they're going to vote for, or on those who have decided not to vote.

As for single payer, let's talk the public option, which is the next best thing and would effectively be single payer with high enough enrollment. We were one Democratic Senator away from a public option, that's all. The House Democrats passed an ACA with a public option, and the 58 Senate Democrats couldn't find two non-Democrats to help them beat a Republican filibuster, and that's the only reason the public option didn't happen. My point: the Democrats did their damnedest to get you as much as they could -- including something very close to single payer, as close as was politically feasible -- so no, saying the Democrats are complicit in denying you single payer is a lie.

ie. Under the rule of a dystopian political system which has been designed in such a way as to make escape seemingly impossible.

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-27

Pretty much what Nikon said. He has been very open about the fact that his election would be one step and that without ongoing collective action from the left to work on congress, he wouldn't be able to accomplish most of his campaign promises. I'm pretty sure he respects the electorate's intelligence* enough to operate under the belief that the peple who would support him would also understand that the only way a campaign promise can be honest is if it is a goal to work toward if elected, not "if I am elected this will magically happen."

*This may be his fatal mistake, an I do think he sometimes tends to go to far down the "this is what happens if I win" path of rhetoric, but I also don't think the primaries are the place for nuanced discussion, right now it's about getting enough people excited and motivated and building momentum.

Bort - 2016-01-27

Visit Bernie's campaign site and see if you can find anywhere Bernie mentions the need to take back Congress. That ought to be a point he emphasizes again and again, yet it is a point that is buried at best. If Bernie's supporters think that electing Bernie will fix everything -- and many do, after all he will "fight" and therefore he will get things done -- Bernie sure as hell isn't contradicting them.

Then again, Bernie claims that he knows how to beat Republican obstruction: he will summon mobs of demonstrators to intimidate the Republicans. What could possibly go wrong?

---

What do we do? This is what you do. You say to the speaker of the House, "Hey, you don't want to negotiate with me? I think we should make public colleges and universities tuition free. And I think we should pay for a tax on Wall Street speculation."

Now, do I think the Republican speaker of the House will agree with me? No, I don't think so. But I think he'll have to look out the window and see a million young people demonstrating and marching in Washington saying, "You know what? We want to see affordability in college."

Bort - 2016-01-27

What Bernie ought to do is play it like a Kickstarter. "Get me Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and (assuming I can get them to fix the filibuster) I will push them to pass a minimum wage increase. Get me 55 Democratic Senators and 250 Representatives, and I will push for a Medicare buy-in public option. Get me 70 Senators and 350 Representatives and I will send a unicorn to your house with your Single Payer enrollment card."

He should have used "American Tune" instead.

https://youtu.be/ZCmgKSUXH18

"I don’t know a soul that’s not been battered"
"I don’t have a friend who feels at ease"
"I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered"
"Or driven to its knees"
"But it’s all right"
"It’s all right"

Play that with images of homeless Iraq vets, people living in their cars, run-down schools, the Occupy movement and end it with images of the rich & powerful wallowing in their luxury & conceit.
