Oof. Parallel thinking doesn't explain how they're all beat for beat copied.

FABIO - 2016-01-27

and she Mencia'd it by making the jokes worse.

Making a MAD TV joke worse. Think about that.

BHWW - 2016-01-28

I sort of thought she could be funny, a few of her sketches on her show were at least tightly edited and she seemed to handle the material well but the cracks were showing in the facade after awhile.

The elevation of her to being some bright new comedy goddess, complete with clickbaity media pieces on how her latest routine/sketch totally challenged the patriarchy or gender standards or whatever has been very Emperor's New Clothes.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

For me, that's the worst part about Schumer, how an untalented and unentertaining comedian was relentlessly praised and promoted on nothing more than politics.

Bort - 2016-01-28

Surely you noticed her breasts? Okay, maybe not.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

Her breasts aren't nearly nice enough to distract from her lack of talent or her doughy face.

That guy - 2016-01-28

Cam doesn't like breasts. Duh.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

Yet I post on a site populated by boobs.

That guy - 2016-01-28

ZINGO!!

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

HA1

gmol - 2016-01-27

I guess it is hard for comedians and writing teams to explain that stealing really is a part of the art. For some reason these people who become rich and famous from copying don't like admitting copyright makes no sense..I wonder why.

Bort - 2016-01-27

To a certain extent I think some copying is inevitable; I know I've visited old videos here and discover someone else made a joke that I swear I recently came up with myself. I could see some of that with a lot of comedians, though a lot here is WAY too similar to be hand-waved away.

The question I have is, why the accusations all at once? Some of the allegations go back a few years, back when Amy was big enough to be worth making a fuss over. Is it that people have been holding off on criticism for some reason, or ... ?

gmol - 2016-01-27

The only reason I can imagine is they didn't get a cut in terms of mentions/coappearances etc. I suppose one way to (dis) prove that is look for copying between comedians who do tip each other.

spikestoyiu - 2016-01-28

Lately she's pissed off MRAs and gun nuts, so I think that explains a lot of it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

Yes, clearly a conspiracy started by Internet villains.

Chancho - 2016-01-27

Patrice O'Neal was a brilliant comic and trying to rip him off is a death wish.

The Mothership - 2016-01-27

Rest his soul.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Yeah Patrice is the one that got to me: at first I was trying to sympathize a little; like, I had heard those two sex moves way before I knew who Patrice was, along with a few others we'd make up (like The Batman, where you come on a girl's back and wrap them in a sheet and whisper "I'm Batman") so there's a chance that, like me, it was just a friend of a friend who saw Patrice who said it to Amy at a bar or something.

But it's the similarity of the same old mythology that pisses me off: for example, the first one was coming on a gal's face with a freshly shaven moustache, and in the other it was the guy coming back through the window all pissed off, things like that. Chances are even your bar buddies who have no aspirations to become comedians will create variations on the jokes they hear so they're not called out on it later. Besides the names of the sex moves here though, they're EXACTLY the same.

StanleyPain - 2016-01-27

I haven't really followed this, especially since I think Schumer isn't funny (OMG LOLZ A WOMAN MAKING SHITTY, DUMB, FILTHY JOKES LOLZ RANDOMZ), but I did read some chatter about how her claim to not be familiar with some of these acts etc. are bullshit since she apparently was on the opening act for a few of these comedians.

Rosebeekee - 2016-01-27

So she's a rapist and a thief.

Bort - 2016-01-27

And her cousin will likely have a great deal of power in deciding whether the filibuster gets fixed next year. (Bort's recommendation -- which he sent to Chuck Schumer -- is that, beyond a certain amount of debate, it is up to the minority to keep 41 votes on hand to sustain a filibuster, otherwise a simple majority can invoke cloture. That way the filibuster isn't costly primarily to the majority; it's costly to the minority too, so they'd be less likely to filibuster with abandon.)

SixDigitDebt - 2016-01-27

I'm starting to feel as though South Park was right when it said that there is a conclave somewhere that does nothing but write and distribute jokes. The comedians only have so much material issued to them and they don't really give tracking numbers so some accidental duplication is inherently present in the system.

Or she's awful.

BHWW - 2016-01-28

I'm going with awful. I actually saw her somewhat ballyhooed (in some quarters) film Trainwreck and my sarcastic reaction was Whoa! Amy Schumer playing an unlikable woman? This must be science fiction! A character who is such a drag, one of the more obnoxious cases of a protagonist you're supposed to root for even though they're repulsive.

FABIO - 2016-01-28

Her comedic timing is awful. Look how much worse she was than a MAD TV nobody at copying the exact same sketch. She's trying to channel Ricky Gervais with the talent of an office comedian.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Yeah I think that's kind of her MO. She has that sort of "last resort at the bar before they close" thing going on, which makes me wonder why she's such a feminist icon (apparently) in the first place. I know it's an act but still it sends mixed messages, especially to her younger fans.

Nominal - 2016-01-28

The Lena Dunham effect?

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Yeah I never understood Dunham either. I sat thru a whole episode of Girls and I get it, but I'm not sure what that has to do with feminism either. Like it's OK to take a drunk stranger home and wake up the next morning in bed naked together and remember little to nothing? Cuz, that's.. uhh.. kinda what Cosby did.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

Dunham and Schumer represent a very immature and selfish interpretation of feminism. I'd say it's the kind of feminism you'd get from a young adult who hasn't completely gotten over the insecurities and awkwardness of her adolescence, and still feels the need to act out. They're like women versions of stereotypical frat boys.

It's too bad that some people buy them as feminist figures. On the other hand, how much damage they're causing is VERY debatable. If they're the biggest feminist voices someone is hearing, it says more about that person than it does about feminism.

infinite zest - 2016-01-29

Yeah, I'm sure there's more recent examples but the only male equivalent that's immediately popping into my head is the movie Swingers, which is a humorous (possibly a little douchey) approach to the bar-dating/one-nighter scene, which John Faverau's character wants to get out of and start something real again. Hell, I'm 33 and just figuring that out again myself! Vaughn's scenes are funny, but the point is don't be like him and you'll find happiness.

I have no doubt that Dunham finds true happiness at some point, and Schumer's real-life persona isn't the one she plays on TV or in her comedy specials, but since when were Vince Vaughn and Jon Faverau considered much more than douchebags by most people?

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

I dunno if any of you listen to Maron's WTF Podcast (I usually put it on when I go to sleep like I do all Podcasts) but the one with Michael Moore he rushes to her defense, saying that having similar material is inevitable and all these "unfuckable losers" talking shit need to shut the fuck up.

That's pretty ironic when comedians LOVE to talk shit about Leary or Mencia: in Mencia's case, he just changed the jokes to "Mexican" and Leary's were a few jokes that came a little bit too close to Bill Hicks' material. In fact, not too long ago Louis CK jumped on the Leary bandwagon when he said Leary's seminal "Asshole" song ripped off a routine he did years before which just happened to have the same premise about an unapologetic "asshole."

I dunno, to me, especially that last example with "Asshole" isn't really thievery: try driving in LA for one day and that thought's probably crossed your mind too! I dunno, I don't have anything against Amy Schumer; before a couple of days ago I didn't even know who she was. But you can't go around shitting on some comedians and defending others.

Bort - 2016-01-28

About "asshole" - the version I heard Louis CK tell, Leary heard Louis do the "asshole" bit, started riffing on it that very night in Louis' presence, and later incorporated it into his act. The trail on that one is pretty clear.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

I saw Michael Moore on TV a couple of nights ago talking about the water crisis in Flint, and he looked like death warmed over. I don't know if it's just old age, or if his well-being is magically linked to that of Michigan's, but the years have not been kind to him.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Cam do you know what show it was? I'm curious to see his take on the whole thing. I'm not the biggest Moore fan but Roger and Me is one of my favorite docs.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-01-28

It was All In with Chris Hayes. You can find it here:

http://tinyurl.com/j2pqu5a

Michael Moore has never really impressed me as a filmmaker or an activist, but there's no doubt that Roger and Me is an excellent documentary.

That guy - 2016-01-28

Maron's a fucking idiot- of course he would rush to her defense.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Maron reminds me of why I sometimes can't stand living in Portland, and he doesn't even live here. Imagine if Maron cloned himself like a Pod-People and they just sprouted up in coffee shops and bars everywhere. But I do listen to Maron's podcast because seriously nothing puts me to sleep quicker.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Robin Kestrel - 2016-01-28

I don't know if Schumer consciously stole these jokes, but I do know I've seen each of these concepts in multiple contexts elsewhere. There is nothing new under the sun.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

In a way you're right: I've seen "white person tries to skate around saying a black person's black" forever. Pretty sure It's Always Sunny did it before either of these, and other examples. But it's just like a "waiting in line at the airport" or "driving on the freeway sucks" bit: almost every comedian has something like that, but they make the context theirs' versus here where it's the exact same sketch/bit.

FABIO - 2016-01-28

There's no way the first one wasn't consciously stolen. That's WAY beyond just the concept. It's a xerox.

That guy - 2016-01-28

"There's nothing new under the sun" doesn't begin to describe what's going on here. It could apply to any one or two of the kinda-similar jokes in the video, but not the rest.

15th - 2016-01-28

I guess she is brave.

That guy - 2016-01-28

Heads up, patriarchy: women can steal jokes, too.

wtf japan - 2016-01-28

Schumer is certainly a mediocre comedian who clearly owes her success to ignorant young white women who have propelled her to star status because they think she's Susan B. Anthony of comedy or something. Now she is being assassinated by ignorant young white men who claim that they are indignant about Schumer's undeserved success, but who are actually just angry because they think contemporary feminism is the reason they can't get laid.

What a stupid fucking world we live in.

Bobonne - 2016-01-28

Pretty much.

Two dumbs don't make a smart.

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-28

Nobody ever talks about how the deeply entrenched sexism in the entertainment industry in general and standup comedy in particular effectively filters out all but the most safe, unoriginal, faux-transgressive but ultimately unchallenging female comedians like Schumer from mainstream attention.

wtf japan - 2016-01-28

I'm not saying sexism ISN'T entrenched in the media. It obviously is. But the entertainment industry also filters out all but the most safe, unoriginal, etc. male comedians as well. Mainstream tastes, by definition, can't be transgressive.

The reason no comedian talks about it is because it isn't funny. It's just true. If you try to make comedy have a message, the comedy usually suffers. This is the reason I've never found Bill Hicks or Jon Stewart funny. I agree with them about most things, but they don't make me laugh.

I think there are many great subversive female comedians/comic actors/writers who have achieved considerable mainstream success. Designating Schumer as some kind of feminist comedian messiah is an insult to their achievements and their legacies. She's not very funny, and female entertainers have to deal with enough shit without her representing them.

That guy - 2016-01-28

Why are you trying to make this a "young white men vs Schumer" issue?

Nominal - 2016-01-28

because not blaming MRAs for something means you haven't dug deep enough!

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-28

WTFjapan, not to nearly the same degree.

wtf japan - 2016-01-29

If it isn't young white guys, who is it? Who else has time to make plagiarism compilation videos and upload them on the internet? The Joe Rogan fan who uploaded this one is case in point.

Also, just google "redpill" and "Amy Schumer." That community or whatever your call it has been gunning for her from the beginning.

My point is that no one else cares except the comedians she ripped off and young white guys. If you're feeling defensive about that, I don't know what to tell you.

That guy - 2016-01-29

If her enemies are often r/redpill dudes, that's kind of a sideshow to the fact that she's been ripping off other comedians and it finally came to a head and she got busted.

If enough professional comedians are sick of someone's joke-stealing, but they had to form Voltron to stick their necks out and say it, it could be the case that the original video was made by someone those comedians know.

And even if it wasn't, and some MRA doosh made this, does it change the facts for you, somehow? Maybe it doesn't, but it sounds like you're desperate for identity politics to come into play here.

Rafiki - 2016-01-28

Since nobody watched the video, I'll point out a few key things to help people out:

1) These accusations seem to have been stirred up by someone named Tammy Pescatelli who, while white, is not male.

2) In the video nobody watched, Tammy Pescatelli explicitly says that this is a topic that has been talked about amongst comedians, but everyone told her that if anyone said anything it would torpedo their career and they would just be accused of jealousy etc., which explains why this is just coming out now.

3) The general public didn't call her out years ago for the same reason the general public didn't call out Mencia until after Joe Rogan pointed it out, for the same reason the general public didn't get angry about Cosby until Hannibal Buress called him out, which is the general public doesn't pay that close attention to anything beyond their social media feed and cat videos.

Jimmy Labatt - 2016-01-28

Take 'em. Commenting is now closed.

Bort - 2016-01-28

Five plagiarized stars. I zipped back and forth in the video, my mistake.

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Rafki the story as I know it is pretty much the same, but it was actually small-time YouTube comedy writer Joseph Tran who called her out on reddit over the two final magician jokes without citing anything else. People on reddit were like "who cares" and "c'mon if you're going to make a magician sex joke there aren't a lot of places to go with the punchline" etc. and THAT's when comedians started stepping up.

Obviously plagiarism and rape are night and day, but they're both career killers: I nearly ruined my college career my Freshman year via plagiarism. It was a paper I wrote in high school that I decided to put on my geocities account, and since I was already overwhelmed and the paper assigned was on the same subject, I just copied and pasted my own words. That was still plagiarism in their eyes and I was kicked out of the English department. I found a new department and continued with my studies but I sure as fuck learned my lesson.

In Tran's case it was probably because his videos (including the two at the end) have about 7,000 views whereas Amy's made millions off the same material, but the principle remains the same as when Brian Harrod did it to us with no financial gain to be had on either side. Just don't do it.

That guy - 2016-01-28

There's a whole lot of poetv-brand stupid in the comments on this thread, when it boils down to a relatively simple issue.

Also, for the most innocuous two or three stolen jokes, it could be one or two cases of parallel thinking, and one case of having heard it but forgetting that you heard it. The other bits were definitely stolen. So there's a beauty in not accusing her too early, even if that happened from political pressure: once she's gone this far, there's a definite pattern.

That guy - 2016-01-28

(just to clarify, for the most innocuous two or three "stolen jokes", I meant that they may not be stolen)

Bort - 2016-01-29

And even as far as "parallel thinking" goes, someone made an interesting point: isn't it odd that the "parallel thinking" only seems to go in one direction, where it's always Amy who came up with the same joke after someone else did and not before.

The rebuttal to that is, I don't know if anyone has looked for examples of the "parallel thinking" going the other direction. I know that I can't find anyone presenting any such examples, but that could be either because they don't exist or because nobody has looked.

Crackersmack - 2016-01-29

Comedians are very afraid to make accusations like this, even when Rogan outed Mencia his talent agency (who also represented Mencia and a bunch of other comics) demanded that Rogan make a public apology or they would drop him. When he refused and they dropped him it caused a bunch of other comics to quit that agency in solidarity.

Ranma X. - 2016-01-28

I could sort of see maybe taking similar jokes (the one of Kathleen Madigan and the one from Obvious child strikes me as more of that 'parallel thought' argument than others), but the joke from Patrice O'neal, Marc Maron, and John Mulaney is almost beat for beat (expect the part where she flubs the delivery). Also, her saying she never heard of Wendy Liebman really comes off as kinda bullshit especially for a comic whose cultural cache is linked to being a feminist comedian. It's like if Eugene Mirman said he never heard of Emo Phillips.

That guy - 2016-01-28

She said that she never HEARD OF Wendy Liebman??
I don't think she said that. Maybe she said she never heard that bit (which is also bullshit).

Her IMDb page says that one of her favorite comedians is Liebman. (this doesn't mean that her people added that to the page- but at this point, I'm assuming it stuck to the page for a reason)

infinite zest - 2016-01-28

Ohh boy,

http://dailycaller.com/2016/01/28/amy-schumer-doesnt-steal-thi ngs-anymore/

not just a joke thief. Now I just feel kinda bad for her. Like, most of us have probably stolen something; if you haven't then you're probably lying or weren't caught. But that kleptomaniacal behavior, especially to that extreme, sort of makes sense out of this.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-01-28

I actually don't think it was a conscious choice, I think sometimes with comedians jokes get in your head and they kind of hang out in your thoughts and sometimes it percolates into a routine.

Mencia admitted he stole jokes because he could never come up with original material to save his life. Amy has come up with a lot of material and quite frankly I believe that she didn't do it on purpose. I listened to the entire interview with Jim Norton and I honestly think that it wasn't at all purposeful.

Nominal - 2016-01-28

The underwear one is stretching it, but the rest are Gus Van Sant shot for shot remakes. She didn't even change the setting of the first one! (except the part where she flubbed the delivery)

chumbucket - 2016-01-28

Yeah a lot of these examples are way too close to be accidents.

EvilHomer - 2016-01-28

Who is this now?

misterbuns - 2016-01-28

is this the only site you go to

EvilHomer - 2016-01-29

Honestly never heard of her. Is she a 4chan meme?

EvilHomer - 2016-01-29

Oh, nevermind, DDG says she's a contemporary television actress.

Is she any good? I guess she must be if people are interested in her, but the clips here don't seem particularly funny.

Bort - 2016-01-29

She's kind of like Sarah Silverman in that you WANT to like her material more than you actually find it funny, because you like what she's trying to do.

Personally I like the idea of a comedienne who is a little bit heavier than the "ideal", isn't ashamed of it, and is ... sex positive? Am I using the term correctly?

Anyway, I like all that about Amy, but she doesn't much make me laugh. Dammit John Mulaney, write better jokes!
