What's the rules on that anyway? Years and years ago I rented a hentai video that was uncensored down there. I think it came out under ADV so nothing sketchy or illegal. But even back then (this was probably 1998) a lot of it still censored out the dick and vag.

I don't know specific rules, but i'm guessing your case is because it was an export or licensed distribution for America it didn't have the same rules.

My understanding is that it's specifically pubic hair that's censored, and that's part of the reason for all of the creepy "little girls with giant breasts" type hentai - you can get away with almost anything as long as there's no pubic hair.

Seems pretty easy to get around if you're drawing it; don't draw pubic hair! That's interesting though because in the states a full frontal shot of a woman will probably still get an R-rating instead of NC-17 because the hair is pretty much covering the vagina..

Genitals are censored, pubic hair used to be censored but has been legal since the 90s. The profusion of lolicon probably comes down more to cultural differences than to shaved-pubes fetishism: the age of consent is considerably lower in Japan than it is in the US, and until the last decade or so, CP laws were pretty relaxed (they were tightened under pressure from Western governments, who - ironically enough - the Japanese public feel are unnecessarily restrictive in that regards).

My theory is that Japan's wonderfully creative porn results from a combination of censorship, their extremely stressful school/ work environments, and the desensitization which comes from being constantly immersed in a sea of media and technology.

That's weird too though, because as far as Censorship goes, I'd say the US does a much better job of censorship, at least for the masses. I haven't been to Japan since '95 but I remember eating dinner with my homestays and "woah" tits on TV! Not to mention what I assume is uncensored language, even in anime geared towards children (like Doraemon).

I understand that I was not there to work; I was 13 and part of an Arts Exchange Program, but I did visit my homestay's mom's work, who was raising 3 kids of her own by herself. The factory line looked high volume and a little stressful, but it afforded her a nice house and plenty of amenities for her kids. Life in the fast lane didn't seem too much different stress-wise than I imagine living and working in NYC is.

As far as success goes, in both school and work, it's true that there seems to be more pressure, but take Benoit Violier, for example, whose restaurant was just crowned best in the world, and by proxy Violier best chef, who took his own life two days ago. Everybody knows that working in a popular restaurant is stressful as hell, but suicide like that is more often to be associated with Japan than Switzerland, so it can happen anywhere. I dunno, just my two cents.

Heh there used to be a comic book store in Portland that my friend worked at : the front was kid/teen friendly for the most part: think more graphic novel than Spiderman or X-Men, but go down the stairs and you were in the Smut section. If there's a fetish for it, they had it, and if anybody's ever done anything sexual, they had that too (use your imagination all you want) I've got a pretty steel stomach when it comes to these things (Thanks, nearly 20 years of POE!!) but my gag reflex was going off a little when I reached a certain section.
