Shit is getting real.

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

Heh.. I've only been kind of following this mess, but here's something interesting:

https://youtu.be/r9xsGktYHMs

That's the same edit of SoFlo from the beginning of h3h3's with no props given to the original person who made the edit!

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

Whoops my bad. If you click through he mentions and thanks the original poster/editor at the very top of the description.

chumbucket - 2016-02-11

I'll bet this would be even more exiting if SoFlo stole some Cool Cat footage.

Cube - 2016-02-11

It's so refreshing to find a Youtube "celebrity" who hasn't been shoved to my face. I have no idea who this guy is and I don't care, YEAH!

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-11

I only know who he is in the context of the ongoing drama, but that's 90% of Youtube celebrities really. I've got my Youtube feed so thoroughly polluted with from looking at things posted here that I'm pretty well insulated from the regular stuff.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-11

It's fun logging on to Youtube from different machines and under different profiles. My home PC has the mandatory NWO-sponsored content on top, but then it's all swords, furries, vore, Aurini, Babymetal, centaurs, half-naked fat women, Sonic fanart, more swords etc. PoE has basically made Youtube awesome.

If I check Youtube from anywhere else - my burner tablet, let's say - it's like stepping into a whole 'nother world, a world of jump cuts and PewDiePies and the screaming faces of Makeup Gurus crudely greenscreened over top of a trending subject matter.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-11

Sometimes I'll forget to log in and see the default Youtube recommendations and it's always appalling.

The same fucking Taylor Swift song was on the front page for like 8 months, just Taylor Swift and PewDiePie as far as the eye could see.

Cube - 2016-02-12

I don't enable cookies for YouTube, it's the only way to get the actual related videos.

If you have cookies enabled, almost all the related videos are something completely unrelated to the current video. It's stuff related to something completely different I watched earlier and stuff I already watched.

I very rarely load YouTube's front page, and if I do, I already know what I'm looking for and don't even glance at the crap they're trying to push.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-12

I don't have them enabled, either.

infinite zest - 2016-02-12

I still get the same stupid stuff, at least on my front page: watchmojo, that loud screaming guy who's kinda like PewDiePie, Jimmy Kimmell.. granted I did click on all three of those things at one point but that's like 1% and the other 99% is usually transformation videos and such, which is weird because those are usually the ones I actually click through to see!

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-12

Turning off cookies definitely helped the related videos though. The feed didn't really get reasonable until I turned of search history in my account settings, now I mostly just get whichever of my subscriptions Youtube has decided to try to hype that week (doesn't see to have any correlation with how much I watch those channels or how much recent activity they have).

yogarfield - 2016-02-11

Who is this thumb?

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

I gave a somewhat complete (abridged) synopsis to EH in a different video; basically SoFlo has been downloading potentially viral videos from YT and posting them on his popular facebook page. Like, have you ever posted something on facebook and only 2 people click "like" but then your friend posts the same thing a few days later and gets 20 likes because he has more friends? Imagine that times 1 million.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-11

Plus he's almost definitely getting paid for it, plus he is running at least one sockpuppet account, uploading the stuff on there, and then linking it from his main account so that he can still get the likes (and probably monetization revenue now) but without risking his primary channel if someone complains.

Also, this has brought some needed attention to the fact that if a Facebook Content Partner reports a profile as a fake, they have the option of getting all that profile's likes and followers automatically, silently transferred to their own when it gets deleted. Imagine if you could file a DMCA claim on Youtube and the video would not just get deleted but instead the whole channel would get deleted and all the subscribers would become your subscribers (along with their ad revenue) plus you would have all of the views from that channel applied to your videos (with all the implications that has for ad revenue calculation.

Personally I think monetization is bad for the Internet but since it's here and not going anywhere, there should be at least some token effort put into fostering ethical, fair business practices rather than designing things from the ground up to reward the opposite.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-11

OH SHIT!

That means Patek Phillipe could get my Facebook page shut down, AND steal all my followers and Likes!

EvilHomer - 2016-02-11

... unleeeessss...

Unless they're not Content Partner's yet! Quick, how do I become a Content Partner? If I act fast, maybe I could turn the tables on 'em, cannibalize all of Patek Phillipe's "official" traffic.

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

A little OT (and I sort of alluded to it in another video) but when shows like Tosh.0 even down to the local news show a YT video of something, did/do they go through the same legal hoops as what's being asked for here? Back in the early days of the internet I'd see now-famous internet FAILS and the comments would always be "Tosh.0 brought me here" or something along those lines; it was actually through seeing the name in the comments that I discovered who Tosh.0 was in the first place, but the only real way people found it was by assuming the writers found it on YT or Liveleak. And likewise the local news would show something even as big as Screaming Goats (about 14mil hits) and not give any credit to the original poster/channel.

Obviously going up against a network, especially one as big as Comedy Central, won't get you very far, even if you were King SoFlo himself, but it seems like a weird double standard to me.

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

(dangit OT was supposed to not be a reply.. but I am curious)

But On Topic, Homie I think you'll be fine: years and years ago I created a "sockpuppet" account for one of my cats who turned out going with the ex. I barely check it or post on it anymore, but I actually use it as a means of communication with a few of my old friends who "chose sides" and de-friended me when she did (she took facebook way more seriously than I did.) Like she knows, but it'd probably require me trolling or posting on old mutual friends' walls a lot of shit about her in order for her to have a reason to take it down, which is something I'd never do in the first place.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-11

I quit facebook almost two years ago but I still have a sockpuppet languishing on there because I forgot the password so I can't log in and delete it.

The burner email account I used to open it was gone years ago.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-11

THRILLING, NO?

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

I'd quit but without facebook it'd be nearly impossible to keep in touch with some of my old college friends, since that was pretty much before cellphones, and they live all over the world now. So if I were to visit, say Hong Kong, I'd be able to hit up a friend vs. trying to track them down or AirB&B it, and same goes for old friends who visit Portland.

I guess if a friend posts a funny video (probably something I've seen or will see on here) it's kind of entertaining, but I could never see it as a substitute for YT, since most people don't actively check on a FB page the way that they would if someone on YT that they subscribe to uploaded a new video and they were notified. Something like a SoFlo would just get sandwiched in between your friend talking about what they had for lunch and another friend's lolcat video. It's as passive as being bored and flipping through 400+ TV channels, vs. something you actually want to watch and comment on.

infinite zest - 2016-02-11

(or the ubiquity of cellphones that is; I lasted until 2003 without one)!

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-11

The most consistently productive, positive time of my adult life so far was that handful of years when I had no cable and no internet access in my home.

Never did end up getting cable, a couple times roommates got it but i never hooked it up. Pretty much broadcast TV free since Spring of 2001, not for any ideological reason just because why would I want it?

infinite zest - 2016-02-12

Yeah I lived in a house with cable my freshman year, like all the digital shit too. And I was dumb and put it in my name since I was the only one with a checking account. Anyway I went home for the summer and they all bailed and it never got paid. After a couple of years they stopped hounding me, but I haven't had cable since. Internet's a different story though; I didn't have it post-grad (except for sometimes when I could piggyback off an unsecured network) and especially during the winter all I remember was getting really good at solitaire and dominoes and not much else.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-12

That's pretty much how I ended p with a cell phone, I was living with 5 other people and onen summer the all got cell phones, so to keep a land line I'd ahve had to pay something like a month (because back in 2001 that's how much it cost to have a land line with long distance)

infinite zest - 2016-02-12

Yeah my parents just bought me one because I'd go for like 5 months without calling them (I'd email but neither of them really understood how that worked so well.) I remember really not wanting one, because then I'd always be available and not be able to make up any excuses, like a doctor with a pager but for stupid little shows and parties that I didn't want to go to.

Speaking of landlines, it's 13 years later and my entire family has iPhones, yet my parents still hold on to their landline. All it is are telemarketers at this point, yet for some reason they don't get rid of it. I don't like to be mean to telemarketers but sometimes I'll fuck with them for a minute because that actually helps with their quota vs. a straight up "NO/NOT INTERESTED" because nothing is entered and F1F2 you're onto the next call like nothing happened. But anyway I was over at my parents and got an "UNKNOWN" and for some reason decided to answer it, already thinking up what to say and it was my aunt in Australia of all people, who hadn't called for over a year, with some very important news about my uncle's health. It was really weird (and I'm sure really expensive). And without that landline # I don't know how she ever would've gotten through, so I guess that's kinda cool.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-12

I don't even have a cellphone; I've got a pocket-sized Chinese tablet with Skype. Top That!

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-13

My parents got a land line again a few years ago when they changed ISPs because it was something like , but they only kept it a couple of months because it did nothing but make them a target for telemarketers.

Once DIY cell phones have matured a bit more I'm going to gut the old early 90s Ericsson flip phone I have lying around, and rebuild it as a simple voice+SMS prepaid.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-11

You know, all of this could be solved with a holmgang.

Just putting that out there.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-12

So I've actually stooped so low as to peer into Reddit to follow this SoFlo drama as it unfolds, and the latest news is that SoFlo (presumably) tried to start a smear campaign on 4chan, which seems to have failed pretty much instantly:

http://imgur.com/DqQrp9C

infinite zest - 2016-02-13

Yeah I've been following this (and fine bros) much more than I should. I wonder if he would've been called out if his own videos didn't paint a portrait of the ultimate douche bro. It's not worth posting on here but he made another response vid to h3 showing off his car and "girlfriend" making out before he beats Ethan at chess. Nothing pisses off the internet than a guy with girls and a car that's not their mom's Volvo station wagon.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-13

Another one I'm hesitant to submit, because the video on the whole isn't that great but the footage of Soflo threatening to lawsuit-as-a-verb the guy over Skype is pretty fantastic:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-rKFoNl0jo

Also the estimates of SoFlo's monthly earnings based on his Youtube traffic help keep it in context and remind you not to feel much sympathy for him now that he's stuck in the hole he dug.
