Understanding just how reliant we are on agriculture is one of the most basic fundamentals of understanding our shared human history.

I liked Futurama's take on it. See Hopper.

Well, at least someone's thinking ahead.

So how do they know what effect those antistatic plastic pouches will have on the seeds inside over even 1000 years, much less 4000?
|
Boxhead - 2016-02-25 I mean, even if they THINK they know, how do they REALLY know, man? Have they ever tested what 10,000 years in a plastic pouch does to a seed?

EvilHomer - 2016-02-25 That's a very good question, OZ! I am not a marine biologist, but from what I gather, there are indeed serious questions about the effects of plastic on seed viability. I can't find any conclusive arguments either way, but it's something which seed experts are wrestling with.
However, according to the Svalbard website:
"The seeds will be sealed in specially-designed four-ply foil packages that will be placed in sealed boxes and stored on shelves inside the vault."
So, not plastic, but rather foil.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-02-25 Sorry but I'm triggered by seeds, also antistatic plastic pouches.
