Want to know why this isn't going to be an issue for Clinton?

"I've known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,'' Trump told New York Magazine back in 2002. "He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life."

I'm not watching this whole thing. What's the gist?

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-02-26

The rich & powerful are keeping Sex Slave Island a secret to keep the common man from being able to visit and enjoy it.

Waugh - 2016-02-26

now they stood beside the treasure
on the mountain dark and red
turned the stone and looked beneath it
'sex with teens' was all it said

EvilHomer - 2016-02-27

The gist is basically what Caminante said, only with less of his obvious jealousy.

Short answer: a billionaire hedgefund manager has been accused of running a child sex ring. Prominent people, like Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Alan Dershowitz, and the Duke of York, have been implicated.

Slightly longer answer: a few facts are known to be true, their veracity conceded by all parties.
1) Mr Epstein has bonked underage girls. He was put on trial, found guilty, and served time in jail for an incident stemming from his lolicon orientation. The jail sentence was *extremely* light (little more than a year on a minimum-twenty-year sentence)
2) Mr Epstein is friends with Trump, Clinton, Dershowitz, Prince Andrew, et al. They have admitted to flying in his private plane and spending time on his private island.

And a few facts are currently being disputed:
1) Various victims, journalists, and law enforcement personnel have alleged that Epstein is/ was part of a larger child trafficking network. He has apparently made at least 17 out-of-court settlements in order to silence allegations, although whether this means he's guilty, or whether this means he's an easy target for extortion, is on you to decide.
2) At least one girl, Virginia Roberts, has decided to take her case to court, alleging to have had a long-running affair with Epstein and that, while employed on Epstein's plane, both Dershowitz and the Duke of York molested her.

The news story then goes on to engage in further speculation, such as claiming that the growing social push to decriminalize pedophilia is, largely if not wholly, being directed by men like Epstein and Dershowitz. They also raise some rather reasonable points about the media blackout surrounding this story - i.e. that the complete lack of interest in covering this case suggests active collusion by America's media oligarchies.

We're all seeing what the media has done to Bill Cosby over HIS rape allegations; what makes this case different?

I've heard stories from people who have gone to Paris Hilton's parties. Some days you just want it to rain bleach.

Has PoETV really fallen so far as to have conspiracy theory videos unironically uploaded and unquestioned?

EvilHomer - 2016-02-27

You are 100% correct in that people should question what they hear. Skepticism is the best possible mindset to have, and part of adopting a skeptical mindset means following the answers to the questions you pose, wherever those answers may lead.

In this case, the claims are well-sourced and mostly accurate (there's some squibbling about how much Epstein is worth). Epstein IS a convicted pedophile, he DOES have documented connections to numerous members of the ruling class, and he IS the target of a rape investigation - a rape investigation which includes Alan Dershowitz and the Duke of York. So none of that stuff is in dispute. It's also true that there has been a media blackout about this story for the last year or two, which is a little odd, given how fond the MSM is of covering racy celebrity trials. (likely the only reason it has resurfaced now is Epstein's probably-tangential ties to the Clintons, and thus, the story's usefulness to House Bernie)

The only thing really in dispute here - as with any other rape case, really - is whether the alleged victims are lying, or telling the truth. Epstein might well be innocent (of the more recent spate of accusations), and even if he is guilty of sex trafficking, that doesn't necessarily mean Dershowitz et al were in on the fun, too! That is to say, this story is as much a "conspiracy theory" (assuming we are using that term in the non-accurate, pejorative sense) as the Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton, and Bill Cosby sex scandals. And, well, poeTV has always uploaded such videos unironically, so it's really not a matter of "falling" at all. This is business as usual. We had a Bill Cosby Rape Week, maybe we can have an Alan Dershowitz Rape Week?

(personally, I hope Mr Dershowitz had nothing to do with this. I've always liked Mr Dershowitz, and his book, "The Case for Israel" had a large effect on me as a young man.)

Zoot42 - 2016-02-27

EvilHomer, I can believe the idea of one barticular billionare being a pedophile, but the idea of a rape island for the elite sounds like something straight out of the satanic panic.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-28

Oh of course, it sounds hard to believe, which is why we need to have things like trials and presumption of innocence.

"Satanic panic" was the first thing I thought, too! However, I believe a lot of the difficulty here lies with the way the story is presented, and with our own conditioned biases. The Satanic Panic comparison doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. First, the Satanic Panic involved some really bizarre claims, things like mass child murder and demon-summoning. Rich guys setting up illegal sex parties is something we know happens - the "sex tourism" industry in South Asia, for example, or Mark Foley's gay Republican orgies (another story which got squashed).

Second, the main problem with the Satanic Panic narrative (the reason why Ritual Satanic Abuse is no longer considered to be a widespread phenomenon) was that the abuse allegations almost always arose from coaxing: adults "recovering" forgotten memories while under hypnosis, or impressionable young children being coached in what to say by angry parents and religiously-motivated law enforcement officers. The allegations facing Mr Epstein are not like that. All of his accusers are adults, were old enough to have fresh, vivid memories (between 12 and 16 years of age), and don't appeared to have been coached into recalling something which they were unwilling to remember before. Again, there is still the question of whether his accusers (at least three right now, and 17 more in the past) are telling the truth: Mr Dershowitz, for example, penned a public rebuttal in which he claimed that his accuser is nothing more than a con-artist (similar to the counter-arguments raised by Mr Jackson and Mr Cosby's supporters).
