"it doesn't matter what you obsess over

nerds just gotta obsess about something
so you can research alternative energy or, more likely, beat a video game very quickly, or draw a cartoon.

it's okay though, there are people on the internet that will tell you you're doing a great job
and since people say you're doing great it's gotta be just as good as other things people say are great, right?

nerds do not redefine adulthood, they waste it.

i am not telling a joke. you are terrible."

baleen - 2016-02-25

I had to google that. the person that writes that has a lot of unfortunate issues.

Born in the RSR - 2016-02-25

Is that why we can't have nice things?

TheGrungle - 2016-02-25

i would not recommend quoting one of the most pathetic people in the universe

Raggamuffin - 2016-02-25

it's just that their is a lot of real estate between people who do science for a living, to people who are maybe a little too into their hobbies, to people who obsess over their hobbies at the expense of everything else.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-25

Is there no joy in your hearts?

Hooker - 2016-02-25

I can't get angry at nerds. At least their hobbies aren't themselves. This is interesting for a bit and I enjoy his enthusiasm.

I'd rather have the government use my taxes to subsidize people just doing shit like this than have them work at McDonalds or something. At least this has some redeeming social value.

M-DEEM - 2016-02-25

when I worked at the nursing home and I saw the same group of 80-90 year olds saddling up yet again for their nightly euchre match I thought what a waste you should have all been brainstorming this whole time on how to make wwii or at least vietnam our last war but instead you hold the reaper and at bay and send Esther into arrythmia with another lay down loner

I'd like communities to voluntarily support him through mechanisms like charity, Patreon, and per-view ad monetization, but I fully agree with the spirit of what OZ said! LGR is a delightful man, he's got a rare and useful skill (cataloguing dead technology is more important than one might assume), and really? Between doing this, or working fifty hours a week at a restaurant, then coming home to drink beer and watch cable television, I'd rather he did this.

Interestingly, LGR with his friendly demeanor and house full of obscure technology, is sort of like what I imagine OZ, with his friendly demeanor and house full of obscure technology, to be.

It is quite odd how a doctor learning every single thing about a single system of your body so he can save your life is widely considered a perfectly normal thing to do with your life.

However, the moment a person dips into something that the social mind thinks, in general, may be useless, he is instead mocked for his obsession.

Raggamuffin - 2016-02-26

Yeah and, as others have suggested John Campbell may not be the best role model either. A few years after he wrote that he turned that cynicism on himself, and on society, and seemingly the world the world at large in a fit of profound depression. He abandoned everything, burned the books his kickstarter funded and last I heard he was more or less homeless and living in various farm communes.

Props for practicing what you preach I guess. .

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-26

I'm a bit taller and a bit thinner and I talk more like a cross between Lindybeige and Tommy Chong, but your impression is probably not too far off.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-26

What's the quote from, by the way? I googled various parts of it and the best I got was "how to be a nerd" on Wikihow.

Raggamuffin - 2016-02-26

an older webcomic called "Pictures for Sad Children."

It's actually a really good read if you can find it and like depressive humor.

Bus Ain't Coming posted a link above to the kickstarter that funded a book of it that also signaled the beginning of the end, when the author had a complete breakdown which he details on the kickstarter page itself.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-26

I did eventually find it.

Not entirely wrong.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-26

Shitty, derivative art style though

EvilHomer - 2016-02-26

So it's Homestuck for hipsters?

memedumpster - 2016-02-26

Man, Bus, that link.
Learned helpless, self-sabotaging, contempt for own abilities due to a need to be accepted by a world they hate as a lead up to a proper self-destruction. S.O.P. of Western Civilization's creative herd humans.

Totally the opposite of the guy in the video, who does neato for neato's sake, truly someone in on the joke of our mortal absurdity. I think the difference is in how technical brainy things are learned over abstract feelsy things.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2016-02-25

Yeah, but can I get this in a corneal implant?

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-26

Cornea schnmornea, what about penile?

Scrimmjob - 2016-02-25

I like this guy, he seems to put a lot of time into researching his topics. Also he does a spot on Duke Nukem' impersonation.

Born in the RSR - 2016-02-25

His thrift shop hunts are oddly entertaining for me, I wish we had second-hand stores like that in Romania.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-02-25

I loved his Fallout review.

memedumpster - 2016-02-26

I can tell I am going to be watching a lot of his videos already. I think I also finally understand ASMR too.

EvilHomer - 2016-02-26

His videos are great, meme, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with them! He's got an awesome voice, he's genuinely educational (as Scrimmjob points out, he does a lot of research), and best of all, he's not a douchebag - a rare commodity these days.

chumbucket - 2016-02-26

Descent would be awesome on this.
