Like the conveyor chain snapped.
That's what you get for using Chinese steel.

SolRo - 2016-02-24

Not the worst thing that could happen to you on an escalator in china

EvilHomer - 2016-02-24

Typical American; brainwashed by anti-Chinese propaganda.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-24

EH, you should read this, I started it the other day. It's pretty incredible.

Holy shit Scrotum that video D: D: D:

five for evil voracious transportation devices

Crab Mentality - 2016-02-24

I read the description on the video that yogarfield linked, and it describes what happened twice, once saying the cart weighed 330 pounds, and the other 330 kilos. Quite a big gap, wonder which one was right.

yogarfield - 2016-02-24

Either one would absolutely destroy you if it came careening down an escalator.

baleen - 2016-02-24

Yeah please don't submit that shit. The only poetv rule left I actually respect is the no snuff submission rule. There's a million websites where people can ooh and ahh at people dying violently for their own amusement.

RedRust - 2016-02-24

I've seen about 5-6 of these Chinese escalator/elevator failures, some of them ending in death.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-02-24

And this is another reason I won't get on a fucking escalator.

Although, actually, I don't think it kicked into reverse. I think it just lost power and was yanked backward by the weight of the people on it.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2016-02-24

I was under the impression they simple locked if they lost power, they generally have the kill power buttons at the top/bottom. I can't imagine killing power with a switch would make it just go loose and freewheel backwards.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-24

Yeah, if they lock unexpectedly it just kicks hard and potentially knocks everyone down, this is something else.

I'm pretty sure the lock buttons are just to keep it from accidentally turning on while it's being serviced, I don't think there's any scenario where an escalator could stop while it's actually running and not endanger the people on it.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-02-24

I'm thinking the motor suddenly lost power and whatever mechanism was supposed to lock the escalator in place either failed or, sadly, just wasn't there at all.

The weight of all those people could easily have pulled an unfettered conveyor belt downhill.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-24

I used to have an acquaintance through work who was an escalator repair technician for a while. He said you're taking your life in your hands any tie you step on one and he did everything he could to avoid them.

This is exceptional I think, but they do jam pretty regularly and when one stops it's not usually gentle, and will probably throw everyone on it forwards (hopefully not backward).

betabox - 2016-02-24

Repair people don't see a representative sample of the things they repair -- they see the broken ones.

memedumpster - 2016-02-24

Escalator is temporarily chute.

badideasinaction - 2016-02-24

Opposite day came without warning.

chumbucket - 2016-02-24

Probably could use the Maximum Overdrive tag.
