Is Maniac Mansion preferred by hipsters over Day of the Tentacle? Do they see some sort of coarse majesty in its inferior graphics, interface, sound, and writing?

Most importantly the gameplay, the choice of most of the various playable characters seemed redundant + it seemed pretty easy to get it into a broken state where you couldnt finish it.
Though dont underestimate the power of nostalgia, when youre a kid you will play through every path of a game like that relentlessly. I missed maniac mansion as a kid, my 1st lucasarts game was zak mckracken which I now love and regard as amazing.

I totally revered these games and kept trying to make my own adventure games.

Guys, we had this hipster thing figured out. That is not what it means. Let us not regress.

Of course hipsters prefer Maniac Mansion. Hipsters prefer Maniac Mansion because it's the better game.

Sure, Day of the Tentacle was more polished on a surface level, but what of it? Godzilla '98 was more polished than Godzilla '54, yet I think most people - hipsters and normies alike - would agree that '98 lacks that inner spark which made '54 so brilliant. '98 was a reasonably competent exercise in using a budget. '54, was a revolution.

Except that, no, '98 Godzilla was criticized for looking bad, sounding bad (thanks Mr. Combs), and making no sense. It wasn't a reasonably competent anything, unlike Day of the Tentacle which took a good look at its own objective and knocked it out of the park. So... not a great comparison, then.

Hipsters criticized Godzilla '98 for looking bad and making no sense, but objectively speaking, it looked far better and made more sense than Godzilla '54. Godzilla '54 was a cheap, rubbery mess, so the question here is whether you, as a critic, place more value on production quality, or on soul.

You are certainly entitled to choose production value over soul (G '98 made a killing at the box office - to date, almost 100 times what the original has made), but I don't think it's fair to fault hipsters for having their priorities the other way 'round!
