The Batman soundtrack was the first album I ever bought. I loved it at the time, but man, that prince soundtrack kind of ruins the movie for me nowadays.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-04-22

I disagree. The Prince only ages better with time. I have probably seen this movie more times than any other movie, probably hundreds of times. I love this movie and it's flawless.

EvilHomer - 2016-04-22

I always loathed Prince's music. Couldn't stand it then, can't stand it now.

Worse than Bowie.

EvilHomer - 2016-04-22

Siouxsie was fine.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-04-22

You are wrong and also bad and I want you to really reflect on your erroneous opinion.

EvilHomer - 2016-04-22

Why? What's wrong with Siouxsie?

Old_Zircon - 2016-04-23

Ilike Prince and Bowie but both of them were massively overrated and not anywhere near the innovators they're painted as. But both good pop artists who synthesized their influences into something distinctive instead of just copying.

I should get around to filling in the blanks in my knowledge and finally making the timeline that correlates Bowie's career with the artists he was lifting his sound from at any given time.

Prince was no Cameo but he had some really good songs.

Lest I sound snobby (well, snobbier than I am anyway) I want to make it abslutely clear that I think Bowie and to a slightly lesser degree Prince (and the Beatles while we're at it) were doing pop music the right way, pop isn't about innovation it's about being aware of artists who are doing fresh, innovative work, identifuing their most distinctive characteristics, and then appropriating those as ELEMENTS OF YOUR OWN SOUND. Sure it's usually done in the lazier "repackage someone else's ideas in a more marketable form" way but when it's done right - which everyone I named did - it rises above that.

I can't think of a single thing Bowie did that someone else hadn't done better first, but I can't think of anyone who integrated it all together and made it accessible to a general audience as well as he did at the time. And as much as people who have the context to recognize that when it happens tend to bemoan the pilfering of their subculture's signifiers (and they're usually right in the long run, because

fuck my ride's here

Yes, precisely, thank you OZ! Whenever people complain about truly great pop bands, like Aqua or The Monkees, this is what I try and explain to them.

Bowie and Prince were doing pop music the right way; it's just a pity that, in their case, there wasn't enough follow-through to keep me interested.

Rosebeekee - 2016-04-22

Siouxsie and the Banshees had the better tie-in song in Batman Returns.

kingarthur - 2016-04-22

The Prince Batman soundtrack was on non-stop repeat for me as a wee kid.

Then Siouxsie and the Banshees became my favorite band around the time of the sequel and still are.

Weird.

There was going to be a bit that got cut for time. The people were so busy grabbing up the money, they didn't notice it was fake. There was going to be a close-up of one of the gas victims showing the wads of bills in his hand had The Joker dressed as George Washington.

It was a callback to the scene at the Museum where Vicki Vale asks The Joker what he wants and he responds, "My face on the one-dollar bill."

I forgot how much this movie influenced popular art, for good and ill.

memedumpster - 2016-04-22

I bet that was a wee tiny little Batplane.

The Mothership - 2016-04-23

This is how I learned about the screaming popes.
