This seems like the kind of thing John Oliver would throw a spastic temper tantrum over.

Gmork - 2016-05-02

Why? Totally nonsensical conclusion.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-05-03

get ready for national socialism pussies

Binro the Heretic - 2016-05-02

John Wayne also said we were justified in taking the Indians' land because we needed it and they were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-05-02

To be fair, history proved him right on that one.

Now that I think about it, history had proven him right before he even said it.

Nominal - 2016-05-03

But that totally goes against his Fort Apache character!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-05-03

I know John Wayne had some archaic views about race, but can''t we all just put that aside, and come together to celebrate his racist films?

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-05-03

archaic is the new relevant

the donald will bring us home to the promised land

“A general belief seems to prevail in the Colony that the Indians are little better, if at all, than savages or the Natives of Africa. Even the children are taught to believe in that manner, with the result that the Indian is being dragged down to the position of a raw nigger.”

-Mahatma Gandhi

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-05-03

Incredible, EH! I googled around a bit on that and found a whole lot more. He sounded like a klansman. You could have hella fun registering the Gandi handle on some SJW forums and just post these quotes. Heads, they will EXPLODE!!!!!!!!!

EvilHomer - 2016-05-03

Yeah, that's one of the things which has always sttuck me about this effort to rid society of politically incorrect historical figures. Gandhi was an absolute beast of a man - racist, imperialist, even a child molester (alleged, but I shit you not). In fact, I've even got in arguments with the VA chaplain over this - Gandhi is horribly inappropriate, not quite as bad as Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood) but certainly worse than John Wayne, and is an inspiring quote by Mr Gandhi, the racist imperialist child-molester, REALLY appropriate for our holiday service, etc etc?

I think most people, myself included, would say that Gandhi is still a figure we should discuss, understand, and even maybe honor, in his own little way. But if one is going to condemn poor Mr John Wayne for being puckishly racist (or for that matter Cecil Rhodes, Gandhi's mentor over the South African question), then surely, one must be consistent and hold ALL historical figures to the same standard!

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-05-03

So I am very curious: what was his counter argument?

Or did he just dismiss you as "that EvilHomer".

It's hard to get around the actual words that came out of Gandhi's mouth, however. One could have a lot of fun with that. "Mind you, _I_ don't believe these horrible racist things. But I have a deep respect for Mr. Gandhi, as I am sure you do, and I think we should at least consider his opinions on the subject" etc etc.

Anaxagoras - 2016-05-03

Yeah, but Ghandhi was different because... umm... he was a very small man dressed in rags. Look... he *looked* like a holy man, so he *must* be a good person. See also: Mother Theresa.

Oh noes! They decided not to toss another laurel wreath at a dead actor's feet? The injustice!

memedumpster - 2016-05-03

He is not the cowboy we need, he is the cowboy we deserve.

godot - 2016-05-03

Fuck that POS draft dodger. From William Manchester:

After my evacuation from Okinawa, I had the enormous pleasure of seeing Wayne humiliated in person at Aiea Heights Naval Hospital in Hawaii. Only the most gravely wounded, the litter cases, were sent there. The hospital was packed, the halls lined with beds. Between Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Marine Corps was being bled white.

Each evening, Navy corpsmen would carry litters down to the hospital theater so the men could watch a movie. One night they had a surprise for us. Before the film the curtains parted and out stepped John Wayne, wearing a cowboy outfit - 10-gallon hat, bandanna, checkered shirt, two pistols, chaps, boots and spurs. He grinned his aw-shucks grin, passed a hand over his face and said, ''Hi ya, guys!'' He was greeted by a stony silence. Then somebody booed. Suddenly everyone was booing.

This man was a symbol of the fake machismo we had come to hate, and we weren't going to listen to him. He tried and tried to make himself heard, but we drowned him out, and eventually he quit and left. If you liked ''Sands of Iwo Jima,'' I suggest you be careful. Don't tell it to the Marines.

Anaxagoras - 2016-05-03

That anecdote was really satisfying. The more I read about John Wayne & his Cro-Magnon views, the more I've come to despise him & everybody who likes him. Hooray! Now I have an additional reason to dislike his repulsive, racist, jingoistic movies!

baleen - 2016-05-03

He also couldn't even ride a fucking horse.

Scynne - 2016-05-03

Wait, so John Wayne war far too reasonable person for communist America to honor? Had no idea he was such a decent person.

memedumpster - 2016-05-04

Don't be flippant.

We lost a lot of lives in the John Wayne war.

That guy - 2016-05-04

Makes you wonder what John Ford though of him.
