EvilHomer - 2016-05-03 Yeah, that's one of the things which has always sttuck me about this effort to rid society of politically incorrect historical figures. Gandhi was an absolute beast of a man - racist, imperialist, even a child molester (alleged, but I shit you not). In fact, I've even got in arguments with the VA chaplain over this - Gandhi is horribly inappropriate, not quite as bad as Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood) but certainly worse than John Wayne, and is an inspiring quote by Mr Gandhi, the racist imperialist child-molester, REALLY appropriate for our holiday service, etc etc?
I think most people, myself included, would say that Gandhi is still a figure we should discuss, understand, and even maybe honor, in his own little way. But if one is going to condemn poor Mr John Wayne for being puckishly racist (or for that matter Cecil Rhodes, Gandhi's mentor over the South African question), then surely, one must be consistent and hold ALL historical figures to the same standard!

It's hard to get around the actual words that came out of Gandhi's mouth, however. One could have a lot of fun with that. "Mind you, _I_ don't believe these horrible racist things. But I have a deep respect for Mr. Gandhi, as I am sure you do, and I think we should at least consider his opinions on the subject" etc etc.

After my evacuation from Okinawa, I had the enormous pleasure of seeing Wayne humiliated in person at Aiea Heights Naval Hospital in Hawaii. Only the most gravely wounded, the litter cases, were sent there. The hospital was packed, the halls lined with beds. Between Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Marine Corps was being bled white.

This man was a symbol of the fake machismo we had come to hate, and we weren't going to listen to him. He tried and tried to make himself heard, but we drowned him out, and eventually he quit and left. If you liked ''Sands of Iwo Jima,'' I suggest you be careful. Don't tell it to the Marines.
