Between the BRA and their cronies illegally rezoning stuff so they can tear down historic neighborhoods and put up expensive high rise condos, and the BPD & Co.'s militant response to the marathon bombing (I was there, I had no idea the BPD had fully armored troop transport vehicles ready to be rolled out in minutes but they apparently do, because I saw them) Boston feels even more tense and police-statey than Manhattan these days. For all my grumbling about it, I'd rather be in Providence all things considered, although even down here I've seen people with body armor and rifles milling around the train station from time to time.

And what do you know, turns out that massive, dangerous, ridiculously expensive martial law mobilization of an entire American town (that's exactly what it was) in addition to an entire metropolis completely shutting down was totally worthless. The bomber was found hiding in someone's backyard boat and they called the police, exactly what would have happened if the response had been nothing but news coverage.

The cops then lit the boat the fuck up with concentrated gunfire FOR AN HOUR *in a residential area*, showing less restraint than detonating an Iraqi IED. Then they lied about it being "exchanging fire" before it was reported that the bomber had no weapons on him.

Fuck that unnecessary, dangerous action and even more dangerous precedent. Remember how quickly the Department of Homeland Security turned from only being used against totally for sure terrorist bad guys to crushing dissent? Look forward to more of this shit across the country within the next 10 years, with increasingly bullshit pretenses.
