I like John Oliver except when he stoops to "take time to out of the way for a really painful joke" parts, which he seems to do just because Jon Stewart (whom I did not like) did it, which comes off as Leno monologue grade humor.

I've never liked John Stewart much, but I like a lot of the people who came out of the Daily Show (which I stopped watching for YEARS when he took over back in the 90s with his Fonz jacket and "I'm hip to the youth of today" try hard swagger). I've come to respect him but I never get much out of watching him.

Colbert was great until he got popular enough that his guests always knew it was an act.

Well it's true that Nocty's more openly rightwing these days, but he has been remarkably consistent with his one-starring of women with opinions (see how he one-starred all of the "Target Women" videos back when they were universally liked here. This was way before antiwomen- I mean, antiSJW backlash was a thing.

Sometimes she goes too far. Sometimes the jokes fall flat... because she has the balls to take the big risks. That Bill Cosby joke got a huge groan, and yet, somehow, it worked. Nobody else speaks FUCK YOU to power quite like this.

Her monologues read like essays. For some people, they might work better in text form.

Yeah, sometimes her jokes bomb, but it's not like Jon's set was always infallible. He blew like two or three jokes per episode. But it didn't matter because he was still amazing overall.

(in fairness, though, Stewart is REALLY good at pivoting when a joke bombs and turning the failure into its own gag. Bee isn't very good at that, at least not yet.)

Out of the various Stewart successors, I like Larry Wilmore the best, but I like how Sam Bee seems to be taking the most chances out of all of them. Her show is still finding its footing but it has amazing potential.

It doesn't hold at all that anyone with money -- or is related to anyone with money -- is the enemy or sympathizes with the 1%. It's more than possible for even a rich person to want society to be fairer.
