I like that they're continuing the theme from the previous one: mocking early tech adopters. Your boss is Steve Jobs!

namtar - 2016-05-27

It seems like more people in the Deus Ex world are getting augmentations than there should be.

There aren't THAT many people missing limbs out there.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-05-27

Once they get the bugs out of the penis aug, it's all over folks.

namtar - 2016-05-27

The bugs are easily resolved via a cream.

SolRo - 2016-05-27

One of the big themes in the previous game was that augments had become a necessity to function in society, like to be competitive in the job market.

Similar how today there aren't many jobs that will hire you if you refuse to use computers or cell phones.

FABIO - 2016-05-27

Nothing says, "I'm creative" like ditching your old fleshy limbs for shiny ones with the Apple logo on them.

hmmm.

ads for games are always better than the games themselves.

i enjoyed human revolution quite a bit, except for the hellish and ill-advised boss fights.

the main issue i take with the game is they never meaningfully discuss transhumanism. being augmented was compared to being gay, used as a metaphor for technological progress as global capitalist holocaust, and held up as the savior of humanity. there was no single coherent narrative behind being augmented and what that *meant*. mechanically, the game was a triumph- just as fun as the original deus ex. narratively, i felt profoundly underwhelmed.

in addition, the entire plot of human revolution was rendered meaningless. as a prequel to the first deus ex, i expected some sort of meaningful setup in-game, instead of a throwaway tie-in in a cutscene *after the credits*.

this ad seems to have a more coherent depiction of what it means to be augmented in this world. i wonder how adam jensen is involved?

and hopefully they didn't let square enix dev the boss fights. that was a fucking disaster and rendered the game almost unplayable, to be honest.

SolRo - 2016-05-27

I liked the narrative being all over the place in regards to augmentation...it's more realistic that such things would have different meanings to different people rather than it affecting everyone exactly the same way.

ie, the rich future yuppie loved his implanted eyeball camera, not so much the Chinese sex slave of her being forced to get a bio-mechanical vagina.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-05-27

i would totally agree if i had seen it depicted that way. to my recollection there wasn't a single augmented character who was bummed about being augmented... please correct me if i'm wrong, but i feel like that would have stuck in my mind.

compare with gunther from deus ex (as you alluded to in the above thread), who was considered obsolete, and hated jc denton for representing his loss of stature thereof.

Gmork - 2016-05-27

You couldn't aim down the sights.

SolRo - 2016-05-27

Your recollection is bad.

There were plenty of characters that weren't totally in love with augments.

Most of them were in side quests and stories though. If you played only the main story, I could see that impression since you're basically working for the steve jobs of augments and he's trying to sell you on his vision of utopia the whole game.

FABIO - 2016-05-28

I swear they also let Square Enix write the main plot.

All the clever, insightful stuff was hidden in emails and side conversation. We'll call this "the A team".

The main plot was Double Dragon (right down to a big dude punching through walls) with cutscene after cutscene of the protagonist being a total chump pre-boss fights (holy shit was the Chinese CEO one painful).

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-05-28

@SolRo

not to be nitpicky, but an *augmented* character who didn't enjoy their augs. of course there was plenty of protesting of LIMB clinics etc.

@FABIO

i played on x360 and was able to aim down sights, although it was toggled, and felt very stilted. the mechanics of the game (skill tree, hacking, level design) was a big hit with me. i agree that the plot was a few steps above dumpster fire.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-05-28

whoops, should have been @Gmork for one of those

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-05-27

I don't do no tricks with no augs, yo.

memedumpster - 2016-05-28

Not even your Auggie Doggie!?

You didn't need an auger to see that joke coming!

(I am so sorry)
