Coders who got paid by the line, or perhaps they had no idea that for the rest of the world the semicolon is a substitute for SLEEP.
It's like case sensitivity. If you're writing code where you've got distinct variables "grandtotal", "Grandtotal", and "GrandTotal", you're doing something wrong. Case sensitivity, like white space, should be at the user's discretion for clarity.
This is too hard to listen to to try to catch the programmer jokes that I don't understand.
