That guy - 2016-05-29

*skateboards to mall*

EvilHomer - 2016-05-30

What's your favorite punk band, Cena?

That guy - 2016-05-31

311?

That guy - 2016-05-31

....or are you more of a Limp Biskit kind of guy?

I'm pretty sure that most of their fans also hate jazz.

Bootymarch - 2016-05-29

How many genres of rock music were there before punk hit? There was rock, and then there was rock that was harder?

"it just sounds like rock" has been the reaction I've had to a lot of so called classic seminal punk bands. What makes the velvet underground and mc5 protopunk and Beefheart and CCR hippy shit? The only punk music I really treasure (Minutemen, Husker Du, Mission of Burma etc.) isn't labeled as "punk" per se. what a bunch of total shit.

StanleyPain - 2016-05-29

I think "punk" music was originally defined as music made by "punks" essentially. Folks banging on instruments making their own style music and then typically performing it/recording it in extremely low-fi, simple methods. It was basically "indie" before indie was a term. This is, of course, where the "philosophy" debate of punk comes in because some people argue that once punk bands started going on TV and doing things like signing record contracts and getting paid lots of money, they effectively stopped being punk.

Dead Kennedys are one of the few punk bands that sound "punk" that I dig.
Bands that came before/after and existed around the edges of punk I really like though. I love Wire and the Minutemen, whereas Sex Pistols and Black Flag never did much for me. I don't really understand what is suppose to be what. I think Fugazi is PUNKER than Sex Pistols - even if they don't "sound" like it.

Bootymarch - 2016-05-30

I just find it funny that John Lydon comes along all "RAWK AND ROWL IS DEAD, IT'S A SICKNESS" and then bam post-punk new wave hardcore punk ska-punk pop-punk thrash metal speed metal sludge metal doom metal black metal metalcore mathcore.....subgenres upon subgenres of men and their guitars and their pretension.

Bootymarch - 2016-05-30

I guess I like the pistols' music well enough but by god they might be the worst band ever.

memedumpster - 2016-05-30

Do the New Duncan Imperials count as punk? I love that song Born To Be Hit.

Bootymarch - 2016-05-29

Fuck were the Minutemen good, though. I came in to say that 60 seconds was all the genre needed because of them.

exy - 2016-05-29

Double Nickels on the Dime is my desert island album. For you, Bootymarch!

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-30

Three Way Tie For Last is my favorite Minutemen album and I make no apologies for it.

15th - 2016-05-30

The Minutemen were something else. I think I submitted We Jam Econo a while ago, but it died in the hopper. If you haven't seen it, it's great.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-05-30

Never mind the bollocks.

memedumpster - 2016-05-30

I remember when someone brought me a KLF album and said "listen to this industrial band," but by the end of side one I realized it was what would come to be known later as Linkin Park.

Born in the RSR - 2016-05-30

Get your pitchforks and torches, because I love the Offspring.

memedumpster - 2016-05-30

Half-Truism is my absolute favorite song to watch TNG Worf clips on YouTube with.

Oktay - 2016-05-30

Hey, that's nothing! Punk was dead for me before I even started listening to it.

Cena_mark - 2016-05-30

I guess you're a Beiber fan.

Oktay - 2016-05-30

YOU MEAN A BELIEBER, GOOD SIR!

Oktay - 2016-05-30

And the joke was, I started listening to punk around 92, by which time it was already dead. (I think of great jokes, then I deliver them like a pro.)

Cena_mark - 2016-05-30

Punk NEVER DIED!

memedumpster - 2016-05-30

The last thought the ConSec guy in Scanners had was "punk rock is rock."

badideasinaction - 2016-05-30

I can't attest for sure about after he died, but punk rock was alive at least as long as Wesley Willis was.

EvilHomer - 2016-05-30

It's true, you know.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-05-31

Actually, that was a cool funny story, and l gave it one star because I thought it was funny. I love the SexPistols, but they're not sacred canon, that's sort of the point.

Except that the point of the music is the music, and that's what this guy, or his teenage self, doesn't get. The cranked up, stripped down sound of the sex pistols and the Ramones, the guitar and drums, was revolution enough. When Johnny sang that he actually wanted to BE anarchy, that was more about poetry than politics. And when Stiv Bators threatened to punch his girlfriend in "I Need Lunch", That was s rejection of shallow pop romance, not an endorsement of domestic violence.

He was right about Donna Summer, though. "I Feel Love " is a gorgeous track . Back then, I was 18, and I was anti-disco with a ridiculous fervor that reminds me of Gamergate. I was a serious white kid.
