25:48 a warning of things to come

DriverStabby - 2016-06-05

Are cargo pants no longer considered fashionable?

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

I was thinking raver cargo pants. I think nu-metal cargo pants are still popular with certain demographics.

Cargo pants are also popular with my dad.

gravelstudios - 2016-06-06

No, strictly speaking they aren't. But lots of guys still wear them because most guys don't give a shit about fashion.

If there's a millennium revival, I'll be waiting for it with my double-barreled Stevens 12-gauge before it has a chance to enter my domicile. But I doubt it.

Some of the more interminable late 1990s American pop culture trends and styles and ways came to a head in 1999 that was supremely obnoxious. However, basic 1990s nostalgia exists but has been muted in comparison to 60s, 70s and 80s nostalgia. It's mostly limited to Nirvana t-shirts and bottom of the barrel snark-preciation of things like Saved by the Bell.

There is no real Aughties nostalgia and I have to doubt there ever will be

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-06-05

Nobody is going to look back on the decade of Bush and 9/11 with any sort of nostalgia. If anything, people are trying to forget that they ever happened.

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

"basic 1990s nostalgia exists but has been muted in comparison to 60s, 70s and 80s nostalgia."

No, it's already pretty big and will get bigger, unfortunately. That's the wy of things.

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

90s nostalgia right now is more focused on the early to mid 90s, but the next thing is going to be that weird island between the Matrix and 9/11.

Scale wise, I do agree it will be relatively minor though, now that I think about it. Probably comparable to the '57-'63 revival of the late 80s that's epitomized by Hairspray and the rockabilly thing.

On the other hand, since so much of cyclical nostalgia is based on people's repressed memories of being marketed to in childhood, the cycle may well start to break down soon as the impact of the balkanization of marketing in the "Web 2.0" years becomes apparent.

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

But yeah, I already walk in to stores and diners and hear big name contemporary pop acts that sound like 1996 all the time.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-06-05

38:20, Out of curiosity, I dialed 10-10-220 to see if it still works. It doesn't.

50:40, Pure Moods.

52:52, I think I once saw a hentai called Twin Dragons. Wait, no, it was called Twin Angels.

1:12:09, whoa.

1:18:27, all those great looking guys, like... Peter Frampton??

1:34:33, Cybercast, ha ha ha!

1:44:18, Voltron reference.

1:46:48, Blockbuster commercial.

1:49:49, Ellen DeGeneres, a lesbian, eats a corn dog.

1:51:20, ha ha ha, Woodstock 99!

Those fucking Old Navy ads. I'd forgotten how much I hated those fucking Old Navy ads. Thanks for reminding me.

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

If you look in the related videos, this guy has two more videos for 1999 alone

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

Also a lot of them appear to be from the Boston area. For some reason a lot of the best commercial and early motion graphics collections seem to be in Boston.

Nominal - 2016-06-05

Emerson grads?

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

Nah, I don't think Emerson grads would be cool enough for that.

I definitely saw a few pretty impressive collections being thrown away when I lived there. The one that really broke my heart was maybe 30 boxes with something like 40 or 50 tapes per box, all one station, 6 hours per tape, meticulously cataloged by original broadcast date. Someone must have died, because the whole lot was just sitting on the sidewalk for free, but who has the means to deal with that? I sure don't. But that was someone's crazy project for quite a few years.

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-05

They've been having a lot of trouble in Boston the past few years because they keep finding really high levels of lead in the water fountains at a bunch of schools, so that might be a factor. In a lot of things about Boston, to be honest.

gravelstudios - 2016-06-06

Thanks for helping me relive my senior year of high school.
