It might not have been green screen, it could have been miniatures or matte or whatever. Green screen doesn't imply CGI necessarily, especially back then.

That surprised me too. I had always assumed the scene had been filmed at the Royal Opera House (which really was used for the wide shots) and the CG was only for the backgrounds, but apparently not.
