It was a big slow-news-day story in Vancouver yesterday. I just heard about it on a stub on the radio.

Montague said the teen's mother was out of town at the time, and he appears to have decided to take her car out for a ride.

Police received a report of a white Porsche Cayenne striking a parked car, but it wasn't until someone forwarded them the video that they managed to connect the dots. The car's licence plate is exposed for some time.

"We would have eventually connected all the dots," Montage said. "But the video made it much simpler."

Montague said even police officers were stunned by the depths of the teen's driving inability.

That thing is pretty much a Honda with a Porsche logo on it. PRobably less reliable than a Honda, too.

I had a girlfriend who got a free PT Cruiser from a relative. Worst car.


At one point we had to replace a sensor for the air intake and because of the way the car's designed that meant replacing an entire big module that had most of the otherwise intake system in it and cost almost 0 before labor. Whole car is built like that. Hell, I actually needed the manual just to find the battery, because you have to take so much out to even see it.

I think you just got scammed by a scummy mechanic.

Manufacturers don't like to design their cars with huge combined systems unless it gives a big advantage somehow, because they still have to warranty a car for a while and it's cheaper to switch out an sensor instead of an 0 assembly.

I had a co-worker once describe the PT Cruiser as "the kind of car you burn a body in".

I don't know any dirt on the PT Cruiser specifically, but an ex-Ford dealer mechanic I worked with complained about various ways they would make their cars hard to work on to encourage customers to take their cars to the dealer rather than do it themselves or take it to a local guy. The idea was the dealer mechanics would have specialized tools and skills to deal with the deliberately annoying set up, so they could do warranty repairs efficiently and compete on price with independent guys despite the ridiculous premiums they'd charge. Also, their mechanics would build up a specialized skill set and tool box so it'd be harder for them to switch jobs (they'd make their mechanics buy their own tools). So my co-worker had a ton of over priced screwdrivers on very specific sizes and a ton of bitterness.

I don't know ford, but I'm now a certified trained BMW mechanic and I can tell you that most of the special tools are needed to make a job faster or for things that require precision.

Cars are built very compactly today to fit all the tubes, hoses, wires, etc etc into a compact and appealing package. So sometimes a specialized tool will let you do a job that would otherwise require taking 20 other things off a car first.

And i'm sorry to say, but your friend is a paranoid idiot. Cars aren't made to be more difficult to work on. They're made by engineers who couldn't care less about how hard the car is to fix. They have performance and cost targets...'how easy is this to fix' is way down on their list of priorities.

Also you need "special" screw drivers, AKA torx and allen, because you cant torque down Phillips head screws (and they round off easily). They aren't expensive. I have a nice set of german made ones that cost . And sockets with torx and allen heads....probably totaling 0.

Also-Also pretty much all mechanics have to buy their own tools...in pretty much every field. In California having your own tools as an auto mechanic gets you double minimum wage, which is going to be interesting in 2020. (and pro-grade tools are great...you have no idea how much nicer they can be. I feel bad for anyone working with employer supplied used up craftsman or worse garbage)

Also-Also-Also Mechanics can write off the cost of their tools on their taxes, about 00 worth per year.

No, we checked around. This was about 8 years ago so the specifics are hazy, but we weren't able to find anything cheaper.

I misremembered the cost though, it was more like 0 for parts and another 0 or 0 for labor between diagnosis, storing the car (it was undrivable, burned through about a gallon of water a block) and installing the part. Anyway, it wasn't my car, wasn't my business. We were well past due to break up at that point as it was.

SolRo, I've heard the same thing from a few different people myself, about cars being deliberately made difficult or impossible to service. Mostly in the form of requiring k-k turnkey diagnostic computers that are brand specific" and while I'm sure some of that is just a byproduct of cars becoming more computerized, I'd also be shocked if the manufacturers didn't take the fact that it helped them effectively monopolize repairs and/or force independent mechanics to buy overpriced equipment and parts direct from them instead of from third party suppliers into account.

It's not an issue of nefarious engineers, it's more the overall structure of the industry.

But yeah, quality tools are great.

Anyhow I'm no mechanic, the most I've done is bleed a brake line and help part out the chassis of an old BMW for sale one time.

Yes and No on the diagnostic scanner thing. Manufacturers are required to give access for third party computers to engine, transmission, emissions and brakes systems and nothing else.

ProTip; many hack mechanics like to complain about this but still don't know ( or more likely are unwilling to pay for ) that you can get access to factory diagnostic software for a minimal charge as long as you have the right hardware (0 for a BMW specific interface head, but there are universal ones too). You pay like for a days access or less if you pay for bigger chunks of access time.


most hack mechanics don't know how to use diagnostic computers (oem or aftermarket) anyhow so I think it's mostly a moot point
