Don't front like you've got anything else to do on Monday.

Hooker - 2016-07-02

In honour of American Independence, we're watching a movie from North Korea, a movie from Hong Kong, and two movies from Italy.

Watching Pulgasari will be the least propaganda filled 4th of July experience available in America on Monday.

The Mothership - 2016-07-02

What was the Hong Kong movie? I just spent three weeks there and it was amazing.

Golden Queens Commando

Maggot Brain - 2016-07-02

Pulgasari is what they call Stockholm syndrome in South Korea.

History shows again and again how nature points up the follies of men.

Trivia: This film's director, Sang-Ok Shin, was kidnapped by the North Korean government and forced to direct seven movies, of which Pulgasari is the last. Ten years after his escape, he wrote Galgameth, a film with a similar plot. There are two clear possibilities:

1. He decided to rip off his most well-known film, thinking he squeeze some quality out of it or at least make some cash from it, taking into account the Fiction Identity Postulate (the notion that all fiction is equally fictional and thus that there are no bad ideas for fiction, just bad executions... and media choices... and audience targeting choices... and marketing...)

2. He had a psychological need to 'own' his most famous North Korean film in order to get over the trauma, which means if you make fun of Galgameth, you're making fun of someone's mental issues and that noise you just heard is Hitler schooching over from the number one spot among History's Greatest Monsters(TM).

This is a fun one. Can't wait.

I read somewhere (one of the big kaiju fan sites I think) that the Pulgasari costume was built over the armature from one of the costumes used in Godzilla 1984, that had been acquired by Dear Leader under mysterious circumstances. Not sure I believe it though.
