Canada, you're doing news wrong. Nobody screamed, no mics were cut, the newscaster was intelligent and evenhanded. The fuck are you thinking?

prang - 2016-07-03

It was cool to see the Pride parade be political. While they were holding their protest I was stuck beside a float that was basically a huge ad for a cell phone company. It's funny, I don't remember hearing about the telecoms fighting the cops at Stonewall?

gmol - 2016-07-03

Rainbow smoke with some dark silhouettes is pretty badass.

Maggot Brain - 2016-07-04

Gay dudes are hella racist and this black chick's fake accent sucks.

wtf japan - 2016-07-04

Please expand on the first part of your comment. I'm not challenging it, but I haven't found gay people to be more or less racist than the mean.

Bort - 2016-07-04

I think he is sarcastically challenging the rationale of interrupting a gay pride parade.

And while I'm a big supporter of BLM in general, I agree that this is a matter of picking the wrong venue to do their thing. Challenging politicians to step up, sure. Trying to overshadow potential allies, wrongheaded move.

prang - 2016-07-04

It helps to know that the Toronto chapter of BLM is largely run by queer women. They were interrupting their own parade, they're a part of the LGBT community and their demands were specifically for the Pride event organizers. Drawing attention to yourself is kind of a part of the whole pride thing? IDK.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-04

It's also important to remember that regional chapters of any organized movement are ultimately scenes, and scenes run on drama, personal vendettas and factionalism.

What I'm saying is, we don't know what the personally history between the leadership of this specific BLM chapter and the other groups involved in organizing the parade (irrespective of the more substantial issues at hand).

Maggot Brain - 2016-07-04

I'm was only being half sarcastic. A lot of gay dating profiles read like the classifieds from the 1890's "WANTED: Man for man on man relations. No Blacks, Jews, Italians, Mexican, Chinamen, Jap, or Polish."

baleen - 2016-07-04

why doesn't BLM protest NRA and police union gatherings, or would that be too challenging?

SixDigitDebt - 2016-07-04

It sets a good precedent, though. I'd like to see the WBC sit in for a BLM event.

Nominal - 2016-07-04

Because it's more popular lately for progressives to attack less pure progressives rather than the lobbyist groups and their Republican pets who cause the problem.

That guy - 2016-07-04

Because BLM's goal is to be as divisive as humanly possible?

That guy - 2016-07-04

If The Onion had the balls, we'd see:

BLM Interrupts Black Lives Matter Protest

5 stars for That Guy

Bort - 2016-07-04

Five phantom stars for That Guy.

baleen - the question BLM needs to ask with any given protest is, what is to be gained? To be sure, being dicks to the LGBT community gains nothing, but there's not much to be gained in butting heads against the NRA or police unions. The former are more likely to provoke a defensive response with a chance of violence, the latter are likely to bureaucrat it away with how these BLM instances were settled in a court of law. But I think we're in agreement that a pride parade is certainly not a good place to do their thing.

Nikon - 2016-07-04

Maybe BLT's organizers don't know what they want or hope to achieve. They just do things.

Bort - 2016-07-04

Could also be that BLM attracts a lot of people who aren't strategy-minded and they go off and do ill-advised things. I'd honestly be surprised if BLM didn't have a problem with that. Not wanting to get shot is the sort of cause that is likely to inspire a lot of passion in the young; it sure had that effect on white kids back when they didn't want to go to Vietnam.

prang - 2016-07-04

They had a list of specific demands of the Pride organization, which they had already printed out and got signed. Once that was done (in a very friendly manner, within like 20 minutes) the parade resumed. You can look it up if you want, but Google is hard.

badideasinaction - 2016-07-04

Forgot these for That Guy

pyslexic dharmacist - 2016-07-05

That would be kind of pointless. At a pride parade, they're likely to find people who'll notice yeah, pride is kind of a white male thing and maybe it should be more inclusive. (I personally have no idea if this is a valid critique of TO pride; I've never been.) At an NRA gathering they'd just be harassed and possibly shot at.

baleen - 2016-07-11

It reminds me a bit of Occupy Wall Street, how they ate themselves to death.

But like OWS, there's good protests and bad ones. This was a bad one. There's no leader here.

TeenerTot - 2016-07-04

Yeah...seems kinda shitty to shit on another oppressed group, guys.

badideasinaction - 2016-07-04

Quick counter from people in the Toronto LGBT community who've I've spoken to at length in the past over this: I think the point BLM was making and the long standing divide in the LGBT community in Toronto is that if you're White, Male and Gay in Toronto you're most likely doing just fine; iirc couples of the above actually beat the national household average for income. Unfortunately that quality of life drops significantly the more you stray from that demographic. Pride has become "yay for White Straight Males, now bring on the corporate sponsors!" and that's the sticking point.

While I'm less big on the "no police float" thing, since that seems a bit less pertinent and frankly has become a distraction from the more central issues, I'm cool with BLM saying "shouldn't Pride be more about helping the rest of the community that isn't doing so well?"

Binro the Heretic - 2016-07-05

Honestly, there's always been some tension between Black rights groups and other civil rights groups. Women suffragettes supported Black civil rights hoping the support would be reciprocal, but the (at the time) male-dominated Black rights movement thought women's voting rights was too outlandish and would make their own cause look silly.

When the Gay rights movement started to gain momentum in the 1990s, there were a LOT of resentful Black people. Some of them thought it was insulting to compare the struggle of Black people to the struggle of LGBT people because it was still a widely-held belief they "chose" their lifestyle whereas Black people were born Black. And then there were some Black people who just really REALLY hated LGBT people.

Bort - 2016-07-04

There is a progression to these sorts of things, the successful ones anyway.

Step One: start with the sort of confrontational efforts that make people say, "whoa, what are these BLM people so angry about?" or "what are homosexuals and why was there a riot at that Stonewall place?" That's the value of confrontation: to get people's attention.

Step Two: once you have people's attention, that's when you need to start letting the cooler heads do the talking for you. Get on the news, write some opinion pieces, that sort of thing. You don't necessarily abandon the confrontational approach altogether, but it becomes less and less useful (and indeed can be counterproductive) as your movement is increasingly perceived as legitimate.

Step Three: ???

Step Four: Gay marriage for everyone!

BLM is in the Step Two phase, where people more or less understand their cause and it's even mainstream accepted that too many blacks are being shot. At this point, BLM can best apply the pressure of protests in cases where they see officials dragging their feet. That's probably not going to be at pride parades.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2016-07-04

The stars are for That Guy.

Inside story, there was an ambulance in that parade lights going. It wasn't actually a float. The ambulance was called downtown, got stuck by party-goers and then blocked by the BLM protest. So they thought they could head down a street but nope... right into the parade route. Eventually they got police to open a barricade and let them out.
