And in full costume, too.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-07-04

Full costumes AND board shorts on top.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-04

When I was a kid, I had no idea this show was tongue in cheek; I thought it was a straight-up super-hero show.

I was a very dumb kid.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-07-04

The goofiness was the best part of it.

I remember an episode where one of Joker's henchman asked him why they had to go through extra time & trouble to steal a new top-secret explosive when they could blow open the bank vault they were trying to rob with regular dynamite.

Joker looked appalled and asked, "What are we, common crooks?" All the other henchmen were on Joker's side.

B. Weed - 2016-07-04

I think camp is a concept you develop as you get older. I used to watch all sorts of weird cartoons and this era of Batman without really thinking of them as deliberately silly.

Bort - 2016-07-05

Take a look at "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" if you haven't already. That's what you thought you were watching with Adam West's Batman. As did I.

Also, about those Adam West fight scenes:

Authentic surfer lingo.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-04

A long time ago my dad told me that back when he was at Kent State in the year leading up to the shooting, at the bar where everyone tended to convene, the anti war crowd and the local blue collar crowd would put aside their differences once a week when Batman was on. For that half hour, everyone in the bar was friends.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-07-04

Can you imagine them doing that for Bale or Affleck's grim-faced snarling serial-killer incarnation of Batman?

memedumpster - 2016-07-04

Other people played Batman?

When?

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-04

There was that old serial in the 30s.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-05

The only Batman worth seeing are the Nolan Batman films and Batman the Animated Series.

memedumpster - 2016-07-06

Nolan films are unwatchable. Every. Single. One.

If you like TAS, you'd probably really get into the 40's serial. It's actually good, and had the genuine TAS look.

Gmork - 2016-07-04

Two goofs, just goofin' around.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-04

Dude.

Gmork - 2016-07-04

What do you want, ya goof?

EvilHomer - 2016-07-05

I want you to quit it with the coded homophobia. Coded homophobia is not the Pony Way.

Gmork - 2016-07-06

Except that there is no coded homophobia in anything I said. "Goof" is short for "goofy". As in, this scene is goofy as fuck and these two goofs are goofing it up.

This is the very first time I've ever heard "goof" being referred to as a way to disparage people in a homophobic manner. Is it new? I don't keep up with modern bigoted terminology other than what I casually absorb scrolling through youtube comments.

::shrug::

You're more up-to-date on homophobic terminology than me, Homer. I'll take your word for it. It's still not the version of "goof" I was using, perhaps you should apologize for your assumption. You seem to be making a lot of those lately, and I don't appreciate the implication.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-06

According to Urbandictionary, which is probably the authoritative source for homophobic slang, it's now prison slang for a pedophile.

So EH is saying that all gay people are pedophiles.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Gmork- Batman is a gay icon. By using the diminuitive term "goof" to describe his trademark openly-proud camp, you are demeaning and disempowering both Batman, and by extension, the entire LGBT community.

OZ - it's interesting you should say that, because as it turns out, Batman is both gay AND a pedophile (he and Robin are, after all, American culture's most conspicuous instance of a classical pederasty). I had not considered the possibility that Gmork's hate speech was both homophobic AND pedophobic (not to mention reviving the archaic stereotype "all gays are molester"), but you make a strong case for it.

Gmork, take notice please.

Gmork - 2016-07-06

"Batman is a gay icon. By using the diminuitive term "goof" to describe his trademark openly-proud camp, you are demeaning and disempowering both Batman, and by extension, the entire LGBT community."

No, I'm not. I'm rather certain I'm more of an authority on my own intentions than you are, considering you're a professional contrarian.

I had forgotten Adam West was even gay. Nothing about that fact changes that they are acting like goofs, and I've never in my life heard to gay people being referred to as "goofs" in a derogatory manner.

I still expect an apology for your hurtful (and still incorrect) assumptions.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

OK, Gmork, let me ask you this; perhaps it will help you to understand your own subconscious homophobia.

Would you call a feminist 'doll'? Would you call an African-American man 'boy'? If not, why not?

Diminuitive terms are insulting and demeaning. The fact that you use this kind of language essentially without thinking is particularly concering, and illustrates how deeply ingrained your anti-LGBT prejudices are.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-06

I also totally forgot Adam West was gay!

memedumpster - 2016-07-06

Adam West is gay?

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Not as far as I know, but Gmork seems to think so.

Batman is gay, but that doesn't necessarily mean the actor who portrayed him is!

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Also, given that he is a person with mental and emotional disabilities, calling Joker a 'goof' reaks of ableism.

memedumpster - 2016-07-06

How is the Joker disabled? He has no problem functioning in that society.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

He has problems functioning in the roles society expects of him. That is why he turned to super-villainy; society would not accommodate him, so he made his own, a society of clowns and trained sharks and Harley Quinn.

He's basically the comic-book equivalent of Violent J and the juggalos; rather than succumb to the abuse he suffered, or sit around waiting for normies to accept him for who he was, Joker seized the night and created a dark new world in his own image.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

... and Batman, being the domestic face of homoerotic fascism, naturally has to try and put Joker "in his place", i.e. Arkham Asylum, the only place the neurotypical Establishment deems Joker fit to be.

So Batman's a jerk, don't get me wrong here. I'm just saying, his jerkiness is still no reason to be bigoted towards him.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

(the irony, of course, being that Batman, as a gay man and a pedophile, would himself have been outed and thrown into Arkham right alongside his nemesis, had it not been for the fact that he, Batman, was born into wealth, and thus was above the rules and strictures of 20th century American society)

Gmork - 2016-07-06

"OK, Gmork, let me ask you this; perhaps it will help you to understand your own subconscious homophobia."

There is no subconscious or conscious homophobia. More baseless accusations based on absolutely nothing but your own erroneous assumptions.

"Would you call a feminist 'doll'? Would you call an African-American man 'boy'? If not, why not?"

I don't use "doll" or "boy" in such a fashion, because that's (a) sexist and (b) racist. Duh.

"Diminuitive terms are insulting and demeaning. The fact that you use this kind of language essentially without thinking is particularly concering, and illustrates how deeply ingrained your anti-LGBT prejudices are."

I'm definitely starting to take you less seriously. There's no way you could possibly be this dense or dumb. I just don't believe you - you've shown intelligence in other areas, so I can't take you seriously when you ignore the parts of my responses that put the absolute lie (or in this case wilful ignorance) to your own accusations. I'm leaning towards "EH is just trolling Gmork for fun again".

"Old_Zircon
I also totally forgot Adam West was gay!"

memedumpster
Adam West is gay?

EvilHomer
Not as far as I know, but Gmork seems to think so.

Batman is gay, but that doesn't necessarily mean the actor who portrayed him is!"

Case-in-point. Homer was the only one who referred to batman as a "gay icon". I'm not sure what evidence there is that batman is gay, it seems like something Homer and possible some fans have simply speculated on based on ambiguity of Bruce/Batman's sexuality in the comics, and the projected "relationship" ambiguity between himself and robin. More speculation, which seems to be EH's strongsuit.

"EvilHomer
Also, given that he is a person with mental and emotional disabilities, calling Joker a 'goof' reaks of ableism."

Bingo. EH is just trolling.

Well, it's my fault for taking him seriously and giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Effective troll, Homer, you actually had me believing you for a second. You do the straight-faced thing so well.

(OH NO I SAID STRAIGHT NOW IM HETEROPHOBIC!)

There, beat ya to it :)

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Which gets back to Batman's link to homoerotic fascism; specifically, the not-so closeted gay men within the Nazi elite, who (like the rest of the socialist power elite, gay or straight) managed to "get away" with behaviors that they themselves could, and did, routinely send members of the economically-disenfranchised class to prison camps for.

Batman is our own Ernst Rohm, or maybe even Himmler, while Joker is Violent J. Could be the makings of a very interesting allegorical comic-book there.

memedumpster - 2016-07-06

"He has problems functioning in the roles society expects of him." Not a mental illness.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Oops, ninja'd by Gmork, who, as usual, clearly fails to comprehend the significance of anything presented to him.

Anyways Gmork, yes, Batman WAS gay. He was a gay icon specifically because he was the first (or at least first truly popular) almost-nearly-openly-gay man in the American comic book world. You can learn more here:
http://www.superdickery.com/

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Meme- it's a byproduct of his mental illness, not the mental illness itself.

For example: ChrisChan can't cope with modern life in the way most people can. That is not "her illness"; her illness is autism, and a boundless optimism mixed with a childlike sense of wonder. Rather, the autism-illness produces a set of circumstances which makes it difficult, if not impossible, for Chris to operate in "the real world", i.e. the world of the neurotypical establishment, which seeks to impose it's own set of rules upon her.

So too with Joker. Jokers illness (which seems to shift from portrayal to portrayal, but usually seems to be some kind of manic-depressive psychopathy) prevents him from operating in normie meat-space - it is not the failure to operate in normie meat-space that is his illness or problem (although Nazi dickheads like Batman might want you to think it is).

memedumpster - 2016-07-06

Nope, that's correlation without demonstrated causation in a landscape rife with the same correlation in examples you're ignoring.

Ain't science.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-06

Well tell you what, Mr Pedanticdumpster, you find a way to get me Joker's mental-health records from Arkham, and criminal history records from GCPD, and I'll have a thorough scientific analysis of his behavioral patterns on your desk within three weeks.

Gmork - 2016-07-06

EH knows that being falsely accused of bigotry is one of my buttons and you love pressing peoples' buttons as fervently as a baby with one of those animal-sound toys.

There's one flaw in your masterful troll though, EH - how would I be consciously OR unconsciously homophobic if (A) I was totally unaware of the terminology being homophobic to begin with or (B) totally unaware that Batman is apparently gay? I'm more of a Marvel man. The few Batman comics I've read don't hint at him being gay.

Patch up those holes in your narrative and try again. Maybe you'll get me to believe your sincerity this time!
