His first most embarrassing moment was last month when Marvel was all "Cap's been a secret Nazi all along! We promise this isn't mind control or anything cheap like that!" Then in the next issue it turned out to be mind control.

I remain astonished that anyone anywhere took the "Hail Hydra" thing seriously. People who had zero familiarity with comic books, okay, maybe they had an excuse.

There is some percentage of the population who will have heard the big news about Cap being a secret Nazi, but won't hear how it's a big fake-out where Cap triumphs in the end. So they may have the impression for some time to come that Cap is actually a Nazi.

Side note, when people say "Captain America" does anyone think of Sam Wilson?

TeenerTot - 2016-07-05

I thought it was Marvel trolling the bigots. As in, when a certain subset of readers boo-hooed about the new Cap being black, Marvel said, "OK. He's white. And a nazi. That more your style?"
At least that's how I like to think of it.

Marketing ploys. Marketing ploys, all of it.

Myself, I'm not upset that they made the replacement Cap black. But I am a little peeved that it wasn't either Battlestar (Lemar Hoskins) or Patriot (Elijah Bradley), both of whom are black AND have stronger ties to the super soldier program than than the Falcon does.

What they really ought to have done is made Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, and Battlestar the commanders / instructors for a next generation of patriotic themed heroes. Put Miss America Vazquez and Patriot on the team, plus create as many other heroes as you like to fill in demographics. They could even be perfectly explicit about the goal of the team, that "Captain America" shouldn't be just a white guy, but could be anyone.

And Marvel Comics really should have taken a note from the Sikh Captain America ( http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-30941638 ) and hired a bunch of actors of all types to walk around NYC dressed as Cap to reinforce the point that Cap isn't about being a white guy.

I got opinions

Raggamuffin - 2016-07-05

I remember that was so controversial they were talking about it on NPR of all things. People they interviewed were saying things about how this "erases everything Captain America stands for," and how their hero is dead to them and their childhood is ruined and how are they going to explain this to their kids and so on.

Xenocide - 2016-07-05

What surprised me about it was that they only waited a month before sending everything on the road back to status quo. You'd think they'd want to coast on the shock value a little longer. Especially since Nick Spencer is a crapsack writer and shock value is basically all he can do well.

Also amusing: In the same year, Captain America was a black guy who protected immigrants from being murdered, and a white guy who loved Hitler. Guess which one Fox News complained about more.

I haven't been following this closely because there's only way it can end up, but I did watch a video about this that made some guesses so I must ask. Is it that the Red Skull took the telepathic parts of Professor X's brain, put them in his own head, and has been tweaking Steve Rogers' memories so that his formative experiences now include positive interactions with Hydra supporters, so that Steve ended up a Hydra supporter himself of his own free will? Something like that?

I guess that would track with what's going on in Not Really Captain America comics, where Sam Wilson is encountering people who are backing bad causes not because they're evil but because they've been shat upon by everyone else. So I guess the point is that, if it could happen to Steve Rogers, it could have happened to any of us too.

Also, superhero comics are bullshit that barely sell these days despite all of the shocking twists and shakeups and new lineups.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-05

Little bit of a change in subject, but relevant to the general discussion: does anyone here remember that Rom the space Knight page from poeRed? The one where the guy was obsessed with obscure comicbook hero Rom the SpaceKnight, to such a degree that, when Marvel Comics killed off Rom, he suffered PTSD, lost his wife, and had recurring dreams wherein the spirit of Rom would come and comfort him, telling him not to be sad, that Rom hadn't really died?

Is that page still up?

Bort - 2016-07-05

I forget that people don't know this: that's J. D. Salinger's son as Captain America.

Xenocide - 2016-07-05

What a phony.

Where do the ducks go in winter? Probably frozen in a block of ice.

Cap's primary superpower: pretending to be sick so he can steal people's cars
