I liked the background story I made up in my head when I first played the game: "a bunch of wacky mercenaries fight each other for no reason"
Then in typical Blizzard fashion it turns out the actual story is atrocious. It's a complete mess of tones where they try to have it as a cutesy Pixar setting, then cram in equal parts embarrassing gravitas ("Nooo! They killed the innocent robot bystander and left his human wife a widow!") and disturbing fanfiction.net fetish tales (the blue skinned sniper chick was a former hero who was kidnapped and mind raped until her personality died and replaced with an evil stripper's).
Anyway, here's the Chinese knockoff I submitted but didn't make it through the hopper. It's even more blatant than the TF2 knockoff.
If they had used the plot in your head, it would be the nonplot of Heroes of the Storm.
I played Legion beta this weekend and the testing team kept chatting with the server endlessly. It was very, very odd. Also, Varian Wrynn dies but we weren't allowed to see the cutscene explaining how, although we got to attend his funeral.
I think you got it backwards Nom, the reason Blizzard is so popular is exactly that it feels like a pick and mix of off-brand Tolkien and Heinlein and Anime and Pixar, well that and their above-average level of polish on the game-play side.
It's like the Spice Girls of gaming, no one likes the whole package but everyone has at least one favorite.
