Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-07-23

We want rump! We want rump!

EvilHomer - 2016-07-21

Good for him!

It's a sad day when Ted Cruz shows more of a spine than Bernie did, but ecce Americanum, I guess.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-21

Bernie doesn't lack a spine, he's just being pragmatic.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-21

This isn't showing a spine, this is the start of his 2020 campaign.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-21

You're right. He's pretty sure Trump won't win, so he's ready to jump in four years from now. Of course he might have burned some bridges here. This could backfire.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-21

Or if Trump does win, it will be such a shit show that he can milk the "not my fault, I didn't endorse him" angle now.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-21

EvilHomer - 2016-07-21

"Vote your conscience" is the best advice any mainstream politician has given all election season, and it is likely to be the only real truth spoken for some time.

The fact that people from Team John Cena and Team AJ Styles are *both* going nuts trying to find fault with his observation, is absurd and extremely disheartening... but also, perhaps, unsurprising.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-21

"Vote your conscience" = Throwing your vote away.

Bort - 2016-07-21

Voting one's conscience, for any meaningful meaning of "conscience", should involve considering the consequences of one's vote. Hillary is the best candidate out there who has an actual chance of winning, so conscience dictates voting for Hillary.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-21

COUNTERPOINT:

While I'll probably vote for her, I live in a state that is literally guaranteed to go blue, so in my case conscience could dictate voting for a downticket candidate.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-21

If your conscience tells you to vote for an admitted national security risk with more wars than Dubya under her belt, then knock yourself out, Mr Bort. Your conscience is a bit warped, but at least you're taking Mr Cruz's advice and following it, rather than voting out of ignorance, blind Party loyalty, or because Scot Biao told you to!

And really, that's all democracy asks of you, because the powers that be don't really care what you say or what you think. So you might as well say and think what is in your heart, rather than trying to metagame it as the masters would have you do.

memedumpster - 2016-07-21

To be fair, we were all raised to obey Scott Baio.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-21

Cena - Could you please define "throwing one's vote away"? Given that one's vote has absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the election - and that the election itself has little or no bearing on the course the government will take, let alone the course of society at large - can it ever be said that one is in a position to NOT throw one's vote away? To have one's vote "count"?

In fact, the only benefit voting can *possibly* bring is a psychological benefit, on the purely individual level. That is to say, while voting has no demonstrable outward effect on the election (it is the political equivalent of praying to Isis), voting CAN provide the voter with a sense of comfort and well-being, regardless of how unearned and illusory that wellbeing may be. Of course, this psychic benefit will only be enjoyed when one votes according to one's conscience!

So I submit to you the following: that the only way to not throw your vote away, is to do as Mr Cruz says, and vote your conscience. Otherwise, you are not just wasting your time (as all voters do), but you are also being intellectually and ethically dishonest with yourself, and thereby "throwing away" the only tangible benefit that you might have otherwise enjoyed.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-21

Also, you do realize that John Cena is going to vote for Trump, right? He's a company man; he won't leave Vince and Linda hanging.

Bort - 2016-07-21

"an admitted national security risk with more wars than Dubya under her belt"

One night Obama was out for a stroll when he chanced upon an orphanage burning to the ground, with three children still inside screaming for help. The door was locked so Obama busted open a window, beat back the flames with his shirt, scooped up the kids and got them to safety. Fox News's headline: "half-naked Obama breaks into home, abducts three frightened children".

Cena_mark - 2016-07-21

Voting for a third party is a total waste. The democrats learned it hard in 2000 with Nader, the GOP will learn it hard with Gary Johnson. Cena wouldn't vote for Trump, he doesn't kiss the ass of the authority, he kicks the ass of the authority.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-07-21

I didn't think Cruz had any bridges left to burn.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2016-07-21

I like how journalists keep saying "...but it's not too late to unite the party!"

Yes it is. Unless they officially endorse lynching Hillary as part of their party platform.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-21

The two main issues uniting the party is hatred for Hillary and fear. It's a big scary world with scary people so they have to have tons of guns and tough leader willing to nuke the fuck out of our enemies.

Meerkat - 2016-07-21

Actually, Big Government put a man on the moon, but hey, you go with your "freedom" thing and continue to de-fund the agency that put a man on the moon.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-21

Even the jumbotron behind Cruz kept fucking up, going blank, and artifacting. Absolutely nothing in this convention is being run competently.

TRUMP 2016!!!!!

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-21

I want to hear more about Tuesday's norovirus outbreak. I spent the whole evening waiting for someone to lose control of their body functions mid speech.

The Mothership - 2016-07-21

He's playing the long game. He knows Trump doesn't have a chance in hell, and when he loses in November Cruz can then say 'I told you so' and look like a sage.

That's how I read it at least.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-21

This, except I disagree that Trump doesn't have a chance. Although Gary Johnson will probably hut Trump more than Hillary, and so far Jill Stein doesn't look like a huge factor.

Bort - 2016-07-21

Jill Stein MD is afraid to tell her supporters to just vaccinate their kids and quit being idiots about it. Also, homeopathy might be okay.

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/progressivesecularhumanist/2016/0 7/jill-stein-promotes-homeopathy-panders-on-vaccines/

Funny how these outsiders are "truth tellers" until it's up to them to speak unpleasant truths, then we find out what worms they really are.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-07-21

You don't leave the Family, the Family leaves you.

He's done, and he doesn't even have the friends at Fox News for a post political career. He doesn't have the charm to be a lobbyist.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-07-21

He was done long before this. It's hard to overstate just how despised Ted Cruz is. He's hated by his own party even more than the Democrats, who still hate him immensely.

memedumpster - 2016-07-21

The Party is over, kids.

One down, one to go.

Chancho - 2016-07-21

Ted Cruz, a good Canadian kid, has the fucking balls to put you American cucks in your place. He's not even allowed to be President but he doesn't give a fuck.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-07-21

Not shown in this clip, but shown last night on PBS: Heidi Cruz getting into a shouting match with Trump supporters, then being ejected from the stadium by security.

The actual footage was shown, but passed without comment from Judy and Gwen in the sky booth. God bless their powdered wigs.

Maggot Brain - 2016-07-21

Cruz is a stand-in for the establishment republicans. He's being fed to the lions here and it's the most likable thing he's ever done.

Void 71 - 2016-07-21

I don't think it's a matter of him being fed to the lions since the GOP's dinosaurs are undoubtedly standing beside him. It's more of a desperation move than anything else. Establishment Republicans like Cruz and Kasich have no choice but to fight for their political lives because they're facing extinction if they don't stamp out the populism that Trump personifies. Unfortunately for them, Trump isn't the architect of it. Even if he loses, the growing spirit of discontent that both parties have been trying to ignore for decades is here to stay.

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-07-21

It does make me wonder how the left is going to handle our own inevitable fragmentation too, considering how close we've come already. Looking at both parties feels like watching Kurt Russell and Keith David lying in the antarctic snow, flamethrowers trained on each other, waiting for the other to fall apart.

Five stars for starving dogs turning on the slowest and weakest of the pack, and five more when ours do the same.

misterbuns - 2016-07-21

RNC looks like the last hours of a drugged out EDM party. People in awful costumes, everyone shambling around trying to convince themselves they are still having fun but instead desperately trying to figure out what to do next.

jangbones - 2016-07-21

An excellent observation

Simillion - 2016-07-21

Backstabbing move? SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING THE ZODIAC KILLER WOULD DO

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-07-21

I'm beginning to wonder which one is being insulted more by that comparison?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-07-22

If Ted Cruz wants to run next time around, hating on Trump will alienate a lot of voters. Also the fact that he's a Category 5 Moron.
