Jimmy Smits.

What a Smitty movie.

Xenocide - 2016-07-25

Literally the only thing I know about Jimmy Smitts is that he once played Krusty the Clown in a TV movie, and Krusty himself was rather stoked about it.

Well this is just awful.
I don't think I've ever seen such a hateful film.
Everyone who worked on this should be deeply, deeply ashamed.

Simillion - 2016-07-25

I think this showed up on a siskel and ebert special about the absolutely worst movies ever made or something?

I look forward to seeing the "hatefulness" of this movie, so now I'm watching it. Thanks

Simillion - 2016-07-25

20 mins in and I'm starting to see it

Simillion - 2016-07-25

alright.. he's conspiring to fuck Walter, obviously. 23 mins in he seems to have a severe frontal lobe injury, or to have been such a bad alcoholic that he killed off part of his brain. Anyway, it's here loud and clear already and I can tell it's just a downward spiral from there. Amazing.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-26

I remember when this came out it was heavily marketed as a movie about empowerment and equality and leaving behind repressive gender roles of the past. I don't think the critics saw it that way but I didn't really pay attention to be honest.

I did see it in middle school when it came to video and I remember literally nothing about it except that it was terrible.

Simillion - 2016-07-25

I think I remember ebert saying this movie depressed him. I think I am starting to feel that way also. The scene with Pasha. Having to hear the word "faggot" and "fag" and stuff. At first I thought it would all be cornball sexism/chauvinism, but then it rapidly devolves from there.

But if this had all been wrapped as an anime, it would probably have a fanbase

Simillion - 2016-07-26

well this just got more and more awful and weird. But at times I liked it? Then I rapidly went back to disliking it strongly. It leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-26

As I said above, from my memories of the marketing this was actually packaged as sort of a "female empowerment" movie which is of course an almost inconceivable load of bullshit.

If you can't look past unjustifiable, unnecessary, casual homophobia I'd suggest not watching any American movies made before 1990 or so, and I'd be wary of the first 2/3 or so of the 90s, too.

Actually, a good rule of thumb is the Spice Girls, because when they broke is around when social (if not economic or political) progressive values became marketable, so while there's still plenty to be offended at in terms of how shallow and cynical most of it is (again the Spice Girls and the whole "Girl Power" marketing meme are a perfect example) at least overt, casual sexism, homophobia and racism wasn't the rule rather than the exception anymore.

yeah I hear you. I think it's because the movie seems to try to make a statement about women and and men's roles in society, and yet there's so many awful, crass, and soulless moments/lines in the movie, up to including Steve's murderer saying "Do you know how many men I fucked to get this coat" to Walter's bizarre relationship with Steve, who blatantly wanted EARLY to jump Walter's bones but in the end just awkwardly accuses him of raping her when they finally do fuck.

Not to mention it's "another body switch" movie that went for a message which is cringeworthy on its own

It's strikingly similar to an episode of Botched where a guy got breast implants "on a dare" to get money, but decided to keep them longer because he liked them, because they were his pals, but he still identifies as male, and he says AWFUL THINGS to other guys like "Are you getting turned on by my boobs" (they react with barely contained disgust OR perhaps sexual interest) and he STILL, despite being in his 40's/50's, is denying that maybe, just maybe kept the boobs because he is genderqueer. No. Still just a straight plain guy, just with fake tits.
