Now it's starting to get hard, I found it in my backyard.
Every night it kills a dog, and now it wants some night and fog

I have to remind myself that most people apparently aren't taught all of this in high school, unfortunately.

Trump isn't remotely like Hitler. Hitler had the courage of his convictions. He was actively engaged in all his nativist, populist, racist bullshit. He even went to prison for it.

Trump just wants some TV cameras pointed at him and if he were actually elected would just sit the whole Presidency out and let Pence do all the work. In fact, people coming out of his campaign have flat out admitted that his vetting process for VP was basically candidates who would agree to basically take over all of the duties of the President. If Trump thought he could get votes and positive, fawning press coverage by saying that he was a reptilian shapeshifter from Mars, he would say it with absolute sincerity (well, fake sincerity anyway).
He's just a male Sarah Palin, really. Just another GOP grifter who made his turn on the buffet line.

All true, but the Hitler story is still relevant. His xenophobic, bigoted speeches are resonating, which suggests that there are plenty of proto-Hitlers out there. Granted, they probably want to deport for'ners rather than liquidate them, and they don't have the sophisticated racial theories that the nazis had. On the other hand the U.S. has a long history of bombing & torturing brown people, and the U.S. is much stronger right now than the Third Reich ever was, so it's still a pretty unsettling scenario.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-26

Clarification: His [i.e. Trump's] xenophic, bigoted speeches are resonating, etc.

StanleyPain - 2016-07-26

True, but Hitler got a big push from the fact Germany was also in the disastrous aftermath of WWI and it probably also helped that the Roman Catholic church basically had been pumping most of Europe with extremist hatred of Jews for hundreds of years.

Not really comforted by the prospect of a Pence shadow presidency.

Those aren't really the point, though. It's a bit like saying this spoiled milk is nothing like that rotted apple. The milk went bad because we didn't take care of it and use it in time while that apple was going to be picked over by worms no matter what.

You're still in trouble if you eat either of them.

gravelstudios - 2016-07-27

Even if Trump is just doing all this for publicity and the proverbial feather in his cap, I'm sure that there is somebody waiting just around the corner to ride his wave who sincerely believes all of it. Trump may not mean it, but a lot of other people do, and now Trump has given them a legitimate platform to rally around. Regardless of what happens to Trump, somebody even worse will follow in his footsteps if things continue this way. I just hope they don't.
