To be fair, he IS Irish, so there's only so much good sense you can expect of him.

Those are fighting words. Drunk-fighting words.

Also, they had refrigerators!

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-07-27

Nothing that he said needed to be brought up in relation to the First Lady's words.

memedumpster - 2016-07-27

So, did Bill join in when Roger Ailes attacked all those women?

cognitivedissonance - 2016-07-27

He was there, loofah in hand.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-28

You misspelled "falafel."

StanleyPain - 2016-07-27

Why, the slaves even got lemonade breaks, snack time, and hugs!

betabox - 2016-07-27

If I'm not mistaken, many of them SANG while they worked. I think that pretty much proves that they were happy, and proud to help out.

Simillion - 2016-07-27

i can't believe it, to imply that they weren't treated like animals, that michelle obama is clearly a LIAR in collusion with the likes of hilllaryy and that muslim "president," we have

= probably the thoughts and comments of your typical half-braindead fox watcher

bawbag - 2016-07-27

I'm only surprised he didn't go for that well-worn favourite myth of white-supremacists/slavery deniers everywhere:

Maggot Brain - 2016-07-27

Causally glosses over the fact that slaves were working in the White House until 1850.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-27

He mentions the food & lodging the government provided as if they're perks. THEY'RE SLAVES. THEY LITERALLY CAN'T PROVIDE THOSE THINGS FOR THEMSELVES. If the government hadn't fed & housed them, they would have literally starved & died of exposure on the construction site.

What the fuck is the matter with the whites in this country?

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-28

Melanin defficiency.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-28

deficiency

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-07-27

Not to defend Bill 'Producer-Fucking' O'Reilly of all people, but I think people are taking him way out of context. He never said "They were well fed and had decent lodging...SO THAT MADE IT ALL OKAY SEE KIDS SLAVERY WASN'T SO BAD!"

Then again, he's a Catholic, and I've had conversations with more than a couple of Catholics where someone brings up the Bible's passages about slavery and the apologetic stance they'll use is just that; "They were taken care of! They were fed and had a roof over their head and treated right! It wasn't bad! It wasn't like the brutal whips and chains slavery you got taught in US history!" Because apparently there's way to treat a SLAVE well and a situation where OWNING ANOTHER FUCKING HUMAN BEING AS PROPERTY is okay.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-27

If you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, you're absolutely right; what he said can be taken as merely additional context. However, O'Reilly has a long history of giving favorable coverage to asshats who espouse the "Slavery wasn't that bad" idea. Given his history of minimizing the horror of slavery, I think it's reasonable to assume he's doing it again here.

Having said that, I do think you're right; if you ignore the history of the person saying this stuff, it interesting and value-neutral information.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-27

BTW... the "value-neutral" reading only holds if what he's said is actually true. O'Reilly ALSO has a long history of getting his facts wrong, so maybe the slaves didn't have plenty to eat after all.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-07-27

Fair enough. I stopped actively paying attention to Mr. O'Reilly years ago because my blood pressure would rise to dangerous levels every time I listened to him talk.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-27

Speak of the devil. Apparently O'Reilly's line about "slaves have plenty to eat" has a long history, and it has usually been bullshit.

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/07/bill-oreil ly-and-the-long-tradition-of-slavery-apology/493223/

The above article doesn't specifically address the White House slaves, so O'Reilly might be correct. But given the history of that semi-defense, I'm guessing O'Reilly is full of shit. Again.

Ninehells - 2016-07-27

Thanks for setting us straight, Bill. Now go back to your Galt's Gulch coloring book, and stop touching yourself every time Gingrich speaks.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-07-27

FIRSTLY: It doesn't matter how well a slave is taken care of, THEY ARE STILL A SLAVE. I don't care if massah his own self personally gave each of his slaves warm milk, cookies and oral sex before tucking them into a big feather bed every night. It doesn't make up for the fact they were prisoners and could be torn away from their loved ones and sold for quick cash.

This is a point I have to go over and over and over again with my "Southern by the grace of God" asshole relatives.

I don't think any of these defenders of slavery would happily trade their lives now for the life of a slave, so they need to just shut the fuck up.

SECONDLY: "There were no illegal immigrants at that time. If you could make it here, you could stay here."

Now that's a policy I could get behind, Bill. About time you started saying something sensible.

Raggamuffin - 2016-07-27

preach it

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-07-27

"There were no illegal immigrants at that time. If you could make it here, you could stay here."

I think my Native American ancestors would beg to differ.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-27

What's wrong with what he said? He admitted there were slaves, he was just providing some additional historical context for people, which was quite kind of him to do. Also, Mr O"Reilly is apparently in favour of an open-borders immigration policy, which is surprising, but very good to hear!

Quad9Damage - 2016-07-28

All these details and more in Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's new book, "Kissing Hercules."

Tripitaka - 2016-07-29

"Well-kept slave" is an oxymoron. Like "nice rape" or "goodnatured water boarding."
