I voted this out of the hopper purely for the rainbow flag guy. He was really selling that Macarena, damn it, like only a rainbow flag guy can.

bawbag - 2016-07-30

90s MILFary Clinton.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-07-30

Quite a transformation from the "young Bob Dylan" look she was rocking at Yale.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-30

I'd skull and bones Co-Ed Hillary, if you know what I mean.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-30

(by which I mean, I would vote her into a secret society composed of similarly-privileged elites, so that she and I could forge lifelong professional contacts together - allowing us to pool our resources, and opening up the kind of opportunities that the rest of you poor bastards could only ever dream of)

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-30

Fucking white people.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-30

Hey, these are Democrats. The good ones.

Lord_Crocodilicus - 2016-07-30

What is the black dude at :20 thinking?

"Fucking white people dancing to a spanish song that belongs in a gay club"

That is a man in the process of being converted to the right.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-30

Well, I'm sure one or two of them were good, anyway.

Sudan no1 - 2016-07-30

The Asian guy with the rainbow flag was the coolest dude there

EvilHomer - 2016-07-30

I have a question. If the internet hadn't become so widespread during the late 90s and early 2000s, would we still be watching our television sets, and if so, would scenes like this still seem normal to us?

Cena_mark - 2016-07-30

No. It's not about the internet, it's just about aging. Kids viewing this likely see this the same way I viewed the 70s and disco. Somethings age better than others. The Beatles will always be cool, but cheesy fad dances don't.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-30

But the content and the tone is completely different. This is happy, optimistic fluff, being aired on C-SPAN as if it's actual journalism.

There's still a lot of fluff and bullshit floating around, sure, but the tone's grown much darker, and people as a whole are far more cynical than they were back in the age of network television and MTV. Audiences might have been cynical back then, too - who knows? - but audiences didn't really have any way to participate in television's narrative, so it's not like any of our 20th-century ancestors were going to call C-SPAN out on its bullshit.

Could you picture this kind of behavior today? An entire auditorium full of Trump campaigners, all doing the Bernie Dance? Cameras cutting away from Demexit to show Hillary twitching her body to Gangnam Style?

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-07-30

The short answer, EvilHomer, is Ronald Reagan. This is how it was throughout the 80's and into the 90's. The new purity. Morning in America. Kind of ...oppressive, no? And underneath, the rot.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-30

But we've really never gotten through Reagan. Sure, he himself is dead, but Ronald Reagan was merely the meat-puppet which the media placed in front of former CIA Director George HW Bush; THAT power structure has never yet left office, and until people start voting for Stein and Johnson, it never will.

If this was simply Reagan's Spiritus Mundi at work, then we should have become MORE like this as the years ground on.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

Cena, disco was the most innovative (popular) music of its time.

Don't ask me, ask David Byrne.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

EH, it's the same reason the Gladiators didn't do this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0a9FtYhuAw

When an empire's in decline and people are wising up, bread and circuses don't cut it, you need straight up cruelty porn to keep the population docile.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

Also as much as I hope we get to a three or four party system somehow, I don't think an opportunistic anti-vaxer and a Libertarian are very good options.

Honestly, as much as I rag on them I think Cenk and co. have the right idea on this: comprehensive campaign finance reform by constitutional amendment, at the state level as set out in Article V.

Until we roll back Citizens United and impose very strict reforms we don't stand a chance at getting out of the two party system, and even then it's going to be an uphill battle with the delegate system and no runoff voting or similar.

Which is why, as deep as my reservations about Clinton run, I think voting her in and then maintaining consistent pressure while focusing on taking back congress is the most productive approach.

Which isn't to say that the Bernie or Bust types don't have their place, without them the democratic establishment wouldn't have anything to be afraid of, and without fear in the establishment, there isn't reform. That's how it always plays out. Rulers that don't fear their subjects rarely respect them.

Cena_mark - 2016-07-30

I meant the bad disco, like Disco Duck.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

Good point.

Ninehells - 2016-07-30

I dunno, I can imagine Bernie Gangham Style. Hillary strikes me as more inclined to do the dance from the "Bad Touch" video.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

Berney Dance obviously

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

I can't believe I hadn't thought of searching for "berney dance" Bernie Sanders parodies before now, and I wish I never had because they are even worse than you think.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-31

OZ, Dr Stein is not an anti-vaxer. You may not have seen the rest og the conversation, but poeTV discussed this matter at some length a few days ago.

Also, those dance videos sound like fun, please submit the best one!

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

I don't now whether I'm sad or relieved that the Harlem Shake didn't hit this year.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

"Popular, Elite, and Mass Dances:

Let me assuage the erudite by discussing here a non-distinction and a distinction. Some distinguish Popular Dance (the dance of the populace or lower classes) from Elite Dance (the dance of the upper classes). For the purposes of international folk dancing, both Popular and Elite Dance fit neatly under Recreational Dance and provide a dimension to our enjoyment rather than a demarcation. Please don't, however, confuse pre-industrial, usually agrarian Recreational Popular and Elite Dance (spread by contagion) with Mass Dance (possibly from a folk origin but spread by a point source such as the news media or a publishing house). Such confusion occurs in: [Z. Barbu, "Popular culture," in Approaches to Popular Culture, ed. C.W.E. Bigsby, London, 1976]

Examples of Elite Dance include pre-1951 Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) due to the allegation that SCD derived from 18th century court dance and thus cannot be folk. Examples of Mass Dance include Hokey Pokey, Limbo, the Bird Dance, Lambada, and Macarena.

Note that Mass Dance certainly qualifies as recreational and does appeal to the populace. Its "top-down" promulgation from a few to the masses lacks that indefinable soul that most of us require from our folk dancing. Both the lack of soul and mercantile nature of mass culture result in Mass Dance frequently failing the "Test of Time.""

In other words, the Macarena is the perfect embodiment of the spirit of neoliberal politics.

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

Should probably also say something about the 90s being one of THE decades for top-down, manufactured populism, and also the decade we saw the co-option of the gay counterculture (as epitomized by the EDM boom of the late 90s, whereas EDM in its many flavors in the 80s was part of a genuine, bottom up counterculture that blended the drug-mystery-cult of the late 60s with the gay disco underground of the 70s and was part of something authentically grass roots and subversive before the mid 90s).

But you can figure that stuff out for yourselves.

Anaxagoras - 2016-07-30

Wait.... what are you talking about? The EDM boom of the late 90s wasn't in any way "top-down". The flourishing of the rave culture led to a great increase in the popularity of EDM, especially in Europe and Israel, but also in the Americas. What's "top-down" about that?

Old_Zircon - 2016-07-30

Fair enough, I was coming from a narrowly American perspective where we were suddenly flooded with shitty, watered down, radio-ready pop "club music" in the mid to late 90s that bore only superficial resemblance to rave culture, at the time or in the past. Or even defensible stuff that was still flagrant cultural appropriation, like Madonna (the Bono of club music) or something. Pop EDM's surge into the mainstream was a top down, major label driven affair here, but it was definitely different in Europe.

So like what Cena said above, I'm talking about Disco Duck (but, you know, for the 90s).

EDM was way to nebulous a term probably.

The late 90s were when the mainstream music press coined and started throwing around the term "electronica" and the artists who were doing stuff that was actually grounded in electronic music culture started distancing themselves from the term.

EvilHomer - 2016-07-31

Trickle-down funkanomics.

Callamon - 2016-07-31

I watched this to see if she was ever fuckable because I could not remember. Suddenly Richard Splett@.22

Such a deceptively innocent-seeming time period.
