These guys are clearly just a bunch of Marvel fanboys.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

I think they hate this movie because they're MRAs.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

By which I mean, of course, Marvel Registered Assholes.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

So, hang on. I don't usually follow drama like this very closely, but the other day, JHM made a passing reference to RLM trying to "silence" films and critics they don't like. At the time I didn't think much of it, as I assumed Mr Holmes was simply having an old man brainfart - but now here, Jay makes a sarcastic joke about shutting down Rotten Tomatoes because of Ghostbusters, and skimming through YT, I notice a lot of the comments reference this same idea.

It seems as if "RLM wants to shut down websites" really is a meme. Is there a story behind that? How did this meme get started?

bawbag - 2016-08-08

There's an ongoing forum beef between RLM and RT commenters, I don't think it extends as far as the RLM guys themselves attempting to silence anyone though, that seems to be a reference to the hilaribad petition to have RT shut down for 'anti-DC bias' by some angry DCEU fanboys.

Hooker - 2016-08-08

I'm going to take a wild guess and say JHM was complaining that two guys on YouTube were trying to silence all media because they said something bad about the modern feminist battleground: a shitty, cynical Ghostbusters reboot?

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

Ah, so the similarities are just a coincidence, and JHM *was* having an old man moment after all.

Thanks!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-08

>>I'm going to take a wild guess and say JHM was complaining that two guys on YouTube were trying to silence all media because they said something bad about the modern feminist battleground: a shitty, cynical Ghostbusters reboot?

I know one has to make allowances for irony or sarcasm or whatever, but literally no part of this statement is accurate in any way, except for the name of the movie, and my initials.

>>>Best thing about Suicide Squad is listening to all the socially broken "nerd culture" women and men trying to defend romanticizing the horrifically abusive and misogynistic relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn even more so now that it has been portrayed graphically in live action and then watching their heads explode when you point their enthusiastic fan-girling bullshit over Ghostbusters' perceived feminism (it passes the Bechdel test! OMG!)

Who the fuck are you talking about? It's Ghostbiusters with women in it. It's not a political film. Everybody who liked the movie in here said th/e same thing about Ghostbusters; it's a fun movie.

>>>kingarthur
You know what? I went to see this and, despite it being a pretty much beat for beat remake of the original with far less superior screenwriting, I still had fun. I laughed and enjoyed Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones and the special fx were done in a really cool way with the bioluminescent lighting for the ghosts. So, it gets a solid B from me.

>>chumbucket
I was entertained by this movie, I think that's all it set out to do...entertain me. Just me.

>>>JHM
>>> I'll say what everybody else who saw it said, the agenda is pure entertainment.

When fans tweet about it, they're not talking about fucking social justice. I submit that the intention of the gender switch was never political. It was a fresh take, a cleansing of the palette.

If anyone is trying to rationalize the relationship between Joker and Harley, I suspect it's the same people who were so incredibly defensive about being criticized for the Ghostbusters backlash. Why would anybody need to defend the relationship between two comic book villains? Batman was actually fucking killing people with a machine gun in his last screen appearance, but this shit is what's controversial.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

'Ghostbusters' wasn't a political film?

Good to know. Thanks, John.

Lurchi - 2016-08-08

Even "good" comic book movies aren't good. I feel this movie is not for me. I do wonder if these things will have some sort of camp value three or four decades from now.

Old_Zircon - 2016-08-08

Ghost World was OK.

Lurchi - 2016-08-08

are you trying to annoy me

William Burns - 2016-08-08

Heavy Meal and Dredd. To a lesser extent, the Tim Burton Batmen and the Sam Raimi Spidermen.

Darkman and Robocop were both fantastic superhero movies, although not based on comics.

William Burns - 2016-08-08

Heavy Metal, not Heavy Meal.

posertom - 2016-08-08

I'd watch Heavy Meal.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-08

OMG!) is completely at odds with their mysteriously blase' attitudes towards *this* film and the fact that about 70% of it is literally just unironically pointing the camera at Margot Robbie's ass.

Xenocide - 2016-08-08

Yes, for a certain pitiful segment of the internet, every movie that will be released between now and the end of time is really just another reason to complain about Ghostbusters. All MRA movie reviews will now automatically rank each film zero fedoras out of five, for how is it possible to enjoy anything in a world where the Ghostbusters are ladies, and none of them even takes their clothes off?

(And anyway, feminist critics have been going after the toxic Harley/Joker relationship for years now, long before this Hot Topic fart of a movie came out.)

Bort - 2016-08-08

Which Joker are we talking about Stephen?

(It was revealed a couple months back that, apparently, there are three Jokers out there. Or at the very least the Joker has three true names. If I had to guess, the Joker's madness is such that he's got three different personalities, each with a different true name. I hope one of them is "Martha".)

TheOtherCapnS - 2016-08-08

WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAAAAAAAME!??!!?!

spikestoyiu - 2016-08-09

Yo she doesn't even have a good butt, though

Old_Zircon - 2016-08-08

3:05 Mike accidentally turns into Plinkett for a few seconds.

memedumpster - 2016-08-08

"Like a Hot Topic threw up on Guardians of the Galaxy" is five stars.

Also, knots are pretty cool.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

I went and looked up a whole bunch of knots after seeing that. Maybe next we could have a Knot Week?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-08

Okay, let's be honest. Nothing is going to keep me from seeing this movie after the trailer with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. I owe it to feminism.

No, I didn't watch this video, either.

William Burns - 2016-08-08

And thus, another ticket is sold and another terrible movie redeemed through careful marketing and identity politics.

Spoilers: Margot gets her "superpowers" by being physically and emotionally abused by her rapist/eventual BF. Please defend.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-08

And thus, another ticket is sold and another terrible movie redeemed through careful marketing and identity politics.

Jesus Christ, did you think I was serious? Are you really that irony-impaired?

>>Margot gets her "superpowers" by being physically and emotionally abused by her rapist/eventual BF. Please defend.

Uh... fictional characters in a movie?.

William Burns - 2016-08-08

Poe's law

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-08

Okay, fair enough. If I go see the movie, it's because Margot Robbie looked so scary-hot in the trailer, and I do intend to go see it. I'm a little embarrassed about it, but I'm not ashamed.

Almost wish I could say I was going to see it because of identity politics, but no. Tits and ass.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-08

I'm not sure I like this new MRA gimmick you're testing out today.

Anaxagoras - 2016-08-08

You know who else used their scary-hot looks to come to power?

Hitler.

You racist.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-08-09

>>If I go see the movie, it's because Margot Robbie looked so scary-hot in the trailer, and I do intend to go see it. I'm a little embarrassed about it, but I'm not ashamed.

If you were into guys, you'd have said the same thing about Henry and Ben. When will we realise that THIS right here is the only reasonable response to these movies, and literally anything else is ideological masturbation on the scale of the 1980s D&D scare?

Whatever legitimate insights you have into the human condition, you're disrespecting them when you apply them to fantasy movies. After all, that's what the filmmakers try to do, and it's stupid.

Hugo Gorilla - 2016-08-08

Suicide Squad was a unfocused mess. But it had Margot Robbie. Margot Robbie has acting chops and sex appeal. I hope she gets to be in better movies next summer.
