What is it with all these Viking hipsters and their hate-on for Amon Amarth? They had it back when I was in highschool, too.

Amon Amarth is a perfectly nice band. They're not my FAVORITE Viking metal band (that'd probably be Borknagagr), but they are good at what they do and they have a lot of fun with their shtick. So stop hatin', you dorks!

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

I wonder if there's a similar movement in Japan? Like, if there's a whole bunch of Samurai hipsters who go around telling people that "uurrr dahhhh Waggaki Band aren't real samurai ninjas, blurrblurblurb"

I BET there are.

memedumpster - 2016-08-16

I guess he released two bad albums.

Metal fans don't forgive. If they love you and you release utter shit, they hate you forever, even your back catalog.

Only infants can still listen to any Metallica album without burning it, and there's a whole generation that hates all music between 1993 - 2009 because of Nu Metal (and the country music fans who like it).

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

That's not really true, I could rattle off a half dozen examples of that NOT happening. Just one example: Iron Maiden put out a bunch of shit - the entire Blaze Era - but the moment they got back on the wagon, people forgave and forgot. In fact, most people probably don't even remember Iron Blazin, or why they were even mad about it in the first place.

Metallica was a special case - they put out nothing but shit, got progressively worse, turned into water-sipping pansies, AND nailed the coffin shut by alienating an entire generation over Napster. Then they went numetal - about five years after numetal ceased to be relevant.

memedumpster - 2016-08-16

People never unforgave Bruce Dickinson. Had he not returned and brought the fans back, Iron Maiden would not have sold shit no matter what they released and with whom.

That's a joke actually, the truth is every Iron Maiden fan knows every word to every Blase Bailey song, we just don't always admit it (Sign of the Cross kicks so much ass, for reals).

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

But they *didn't*. You know this. They didn't hate Iron Maiden forever, and they didn't turn on Maiden's back catalogue.

The same could be said for Theatre of Tragedy (peeps turned on them over Musique), In Flames (who haven't released a good album since Clayman), or even White Zombie (went numetal after only two albums). And Black Sabbath was basically your theory, in reverse - everyone wants to hear Ozzy-era Sabbath, despite the fact that Sabbath was ten times better with Dio, and Ozzy was a hundred times better flying solo.

Hell, even Metallica - I've never met a man alive who doesn't love Master of Puppets! Lars Ulrich, maybe, but everyone who counts, they still love it.

memedumpster - 2016-08-16

You're going to have to read more than the first sentence of my posts if you want me to waste our time arguing over nothing. I don't want the No Man's Sky of nerd rage, it has to be fun.

Also, Kill Em All is the only remotely listenable Metallica album.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

I read every sentence of your posts. Paragraph by paragraph: you presented your thesis, you used Metallica to illustrate your thesis, you tried to fit Iron Maiden into this thesis, and then you gave up and admitted that metal fans will happily listen to even Blaze Era crap.

Kill Em All was only the third best Metallica album, fourth if you count S&M, and it's really only that high because it got extra points for Mustaine's handiwork.

memedumpster - 2016-08-16

Fine, we'll do it your way, Franky! At least for this post, then I have to accomplish things.

Michael Kamen is literally the worst composer to ever exist in the human form. S&M only sounds good for Metallica because even they can write better music.

Space Odin - 2016-08-16

The only Metallica album I can even really listen to is Ride the Lightning, I'm that kind of metal hipster.

And even then, I'd rather be listening to Testament.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

Ride's my favorite Metallica album, too! It isn't quite as consistent all-throughout as MoP was, but it features Metallica's best tracks.

Testament is going a bit far, however.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

That said, *I'd* rather be listening to Babymetal. I'm 'that' kind of metal hipster...

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-08-16

I listen to mostly Viking Metal and I don't like Amon Amarth because it's never really appealed to me and I can't explain why.

As for why nerds would want to bash it in forums? I think that would be obvious. Traditional [insert hipster autistic fandom here] dictates that anything with mainstream success is actually the worst example of that thing.

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-08-16

*Traditional [fandom] logic dictates

Space Odin - 2016-08-17

Metal subgenre fandom tends to attract pockets of the worst sorts of goofballs and in my experience black metal/viking metal types have some of the worst.

Besides the guys that think Varg is some sort of actual political martyr you're surrounded by hordes of humorless fundamentalist kids who reject any innovation in sound made after the first couple of Darkthrone albums. You know, the same people don't understand that Immortal/Abbath were never more than semi-serious and just goofing around.

Born in the RSR - 2016-08-16

Are we ever going to get passed internet trolling?

Like just get to the level where it's just background static and everyone ignores it and treats it as such.

I don't get why people put such effort into fighting "haters and trolls". Take these guys, they're in a successful band (as in I have seen plenty of people wearing their t-shirts), they release albums and they tour... why bother with reddit trolls? Why even acknowledge them?

memedumpster - 2016-08-16

What would Rambu do?

DoomsDave - 2016-08-16

Yeah a shame to see Amon Amarth pulling a Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back here. Stay above it, guys.

Space Odin - 2016-08-16

I'm pretty sure this was less a "revenge on trolls" act and more of a way to get clicks and hype an album -- Considering my dumb ass reshared it on this site, one can call this effort a success.

Chancho - 2016-08-16

I want to start an adult baby viking metal group.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-16

Babyvikingmetal?

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-08-16

...sounds sort of redundant, no?

Ugh - 2016-08-16

i choose.... the hot pocket
