Jeez, will they ever make an at least decent video game?

Lurchi - 2016-08-16

I don't hate it, but it's not really very good. You walk around on randomly generated landscapes and there are some randomly generated animals and you have to mine stuff constantly and your inventory is a pain in the ass. Graphics feel about ten years old (on pc) but there are some pretty colors and ok music. Feels worth less than .

Lurchi - 2016-08-16

ten dollars.

bawbag - 2016-08-16

I paid 13 Euros after trading in some old games I was done with. Enjoying it thoroughly despite the backlash to the reddit hype.

chumbucket - 2016-08-16

So basically Minecraft without creativity.

badideasinaction - 2016-08-16

After seeing someone play for a while I could see paying 30 bucks for this.

I think it was best described as "an infinite variation of incredibly thin gameplay".

Gmork - 2016-08-17

How the hell do you trade in your old games? Unless you're not talking about steam.

Shit, I'd be rich if I could give back every steam game I was never going to touch again.

bawbag - 2016-08-17

PS4, but IIRC Steam does offer a pretty robust return/refund policy.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-17

Steam's refund policy is a joke. If you play a game for more than an hour you can't return it - which includes cutscenes, tutorials, and bathroom breaks. You'd better decide you hate the game quick; otherwise, you're stuck with it. Forever.

Which was kinda the whole point of online DRM schemes, like Steam. The right of first sale, one of the most important (and, because it favors consumers, least discussed) concepts in copyright law, has always been a major sticking point for software corporations, who wished that they could provide services rather than products. Thanks to the popularity of digital distribution and the absolute void of legal protections in place for that market, they've basically done away with the concept of "ownership", at least so far as end-users are concerned.

You don't "buy" a game anymore. You are "leased" the rights to play a game, on a limited number of devices, for so long as the corporate servers feel like remaining up.

bawbag - 2016-08-17

Within '14 days of purchase and under 2 hours played' seems pretty reasonable tbh.

They have also waived it for several games that generated a lot of negative feedback and offered no-quibble return/refund in those cases.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-16

For all the shit that NMS is getting, (deservedly), it's a shame the gaming media didn't crucify the devs behind Elite Dangerous for literally taking in tons of money via kickstarter, early access, etc. then basically saying that the unfinished beta game everyone had been playing for a year or so was just a "first season" and that you had to re-buy the game to get the "next season" which had all the features that were promised at launch, and the game STILL runs like shit and still requires you to constantly be online even though there is absolutely no reason for you to do so if you are playing single player.

bawbag - 2016-08-16

True that. There's a much bigger emotional/financial sunken cost for the kickstarter types and elite fans though.

The wings issues are VAST though, so it is interesting to see how little flak they're taking as compared to Murray and co.

NewHeavenSockman - 2016-08-16

missing the robot voice nagging you about your radiation shield being at 85%

Dr. Lobotomy - 2016-08-16

Or the game crashing.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-08-16

bucks.

memedumpster - 2016-08-16

What PreRec last weekend taught me about this game.

1.) No dinosaurs you can ride.
2.) No crashing.
3.) No dinosaurs you can ranch to make new and exciting dinosaurs.
4.) No hookers.
5.) No robot companions.
6.) No planet eating space monsters.

I think somewhere it was determined this game needs Max Landis to fix it.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2016-08-17

Are you saying there was a Previously Recorded for this? I couldn't find anything on Youtube.

memedumpster - 2016-08-18

Their YouTube vids are actually behind their twitch streams. You'll see it on YouTube either in or after they put up the Half-Life 2 stream, in about five more streams or so.

SixDigitDebt - 2016-08-16

Only cost me 65 fuck you dollars.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-16

I am looking forward to the inevitable Xbox One release a year from now which has all the patches and actual content.

duck&cover - 2016-08-16

Tardasaurus Rex.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-08-16

The drama this game has generated is fucking amazing to sit back and watch.

I didn't see what the big deal was pre-release and I don't now, but damn is the absolute obsession with hating/defending this game that has people at each others throats entertaining.

TheGrungle - 2016-08-16

no game buy

Ugh - 2016-08-16

*shrugging ascii man goes here*

Binro the Heretic - 2016-08-16

Procedurally-generated shit.

magnesium - 2016-08-16

The problem with procedurally generating things is that you don't get the deliberate, direct creativity. I'm sure its an alright game. I might get it in a million years when I have some free time. The hype followed by letdown of this reminds me so much of Spore. But 100x that.

Raggamuffin - 2016-08-16

yeah. Without a human hand guiding the experience, I find it hollow. You can give me a million worlds to discover, but they each are a bunch of funny shapes and weird animals and the experience isn't very rewarding. Contrast with something hand made, like an elder scrolls or fallout game and all the exploration is rewarded with secrets in the form of story stuff, plot background, as well as items and puzzles.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-08-16

You are wrong. Dwarf Fortress justifies all procedural generation, ever.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-08-16

"Dwarf Fortress" gives the player WAY more control than "No Man's Sky," though.

Same goes for "Minecraft," "Terraria," "Starbound" and "Subnautica." You can get away with procedural generation and thin plots as long as you give the player a chance to craft their own world.

Oh, I forgot about "Craft the World."

Anyway, I'm going through "Minecraft" withdrawal right now. I was one of those lucky people who had their hard drive partitions fucked up by the latest Windows update. The drive with all my non-Steam games is in some sort of inaccessible parallel dimension right now.

I miss my nightly "Minecraft" session.

Raggamuffin - 2016-08-16

Well they are all sandbox games. The difference is that some people see a sandbox and want to build a sandcastle, and some people just want to pour the sand all over their skin.

poorwill - 2016-08-17

Procedural generation is fine - if it's done well. Many of the best games ever made have it (Nethack, Civ, Spelunky etc.) and many that don't have it could be improved by it. It's really no different than AI, but you never see people bemoaning the rise of complex AI over canned behaviours.

Space Odin - 2016-08-16

The worst part is this is still clearly better than anything Ubisoft has published in the last five years with the possible exception of Blood Dragon.

Gmork - 2016-08-16

What's wrong with far cry 4? I found it enjoyable. Plenty of high quality user-created levels for it as well.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-08-16

I'd take any Ass Creed, Far Cry, or Watch Dogs game over No Man's Sky.

Sue me.

Space Odin - 2016-08-16

I'll give you FC4.

Even though I just sit at the table enjoying the crab Rangoon.

Gmork - 2016-08-16

something something mr. potato head

Old_Zircon - 2016-08-17

As someone who hardly pays any attention to current games and doesn't really play much in general, I can objectively say that this looks like a Bryce 3d demo clip from 1999.

Cutting edge!
