If you're still in or near Providence I'll help you get those 4 track tapes transferred.

I just checked the Vimeo page. Close enough. Hit me up on the MNR google group, we'll figure something out:

aw man, thanks! I just ordered a 4 channel usb doohicky though, and should be able to start dumping in a week or two depending how fast I can learn this digital stuff.

REALLY appreciated, maybe I'll cry for help on the google group as soon as I start hitting the inevitable snags

No problem, if you run in to any trouble feel free to ask! Make sure to check that your tapes aren't shedding, too (play for a few seconds and make sure the magnetic coating isn't rubbing off on to the heads) because if they are, playing them will ruin them but there is a chance of saving them by heating them to a specific temperature for somewhere between a couple hours and a day or two and then transferring them right away (I've never tried myself, and never heard of anyone successfully baking a cassette but it's used to rescue failing reel to reel masters a lot and is pretty well documented online. Basically you just need a decent food dehydrator that will heat evenly.

Hopefully it won't be an issue, but it's a possibility with any tape made before around 1995.

Also, once they're transferred, assuming you're doing it as four tracks, I'd probably be down to do new mixes of a few favorites if you want, just for fun.

I need to transfer my old high school 4 track tapes soon, too, I've got about 100 of them from the 90s in a box in my closet.

It's the tapes I made when I was really young that I'm worried about, though, we had no money in the 80s so they're all on the worst, 6 for a dollar Radio Shack cassettes that were already squeaky when you bought them.
