I didn't think it was possible to remake a fake found footage movie, since any possible ambiguity is already dead on arrival. I'm also not a Lionsgate director or a nihilistically greedy fuck, though.

That's pretty much Mike's point here. You can't do it because the novelty is DOA as soon as you step in the theater. I'm just bummed, like they are, that Adam Wingard had to be the one to make this.

I would definitely watch Silent Screams.

I thought the first Blair witch was awful (while everyone else I knew was raving about it), but this sounds much worse.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-09-21

I dozed off several times while watching the first Blair Witch, but the parts I was awake for did scare me.

Old_Zircon - 2016-09-21

I saw it in the theater and I thought it was refreshing compared to what you usually saw at the time, but not brilliant or anything.

I'd rewatch it over any Lars Von Trier movie I can think of, anyway.

bawbag - 2016-09-21

It was fairly original, granted. I just found it really dull otherwise.

I do like Von Trier though I get why people don't, except for that shit with Bjork which I will agree is fucking awful. Great movie with horrifically bad musical interludes that by the end had me screaming 'hang her already for fuck's sake before she sings again!'

Blair Witch was probably, and is still, the best found footage horror movie ever made. That's not to say it's a great masterpiece or that it's very re-watchable, but it is probably, on a technical level, the best of that genre ever attempted largely due to the realistic nature of the acting (they were amateurs and improvised most of the film) and the technique they used to film which is literally giving the actors the cameras, telling them to film themselves, then following them around in the woods and fucking with them on purpose and feeding them their lines and motivation only on a daily basis.
On that level, I think it is probably a classic. And it didn't make the mistake of ever going to far or turning into a monster movie. I haven't seen this new one, but the entire idea of higher budget, slightly more jump-scarier/in-your-face Blair Witch seems to be an epic-level case of missing the point of the original. Even the sequel, Book of Shadows, didn't even try that. The only film I have ever seen that even comes close to the original is maybe that one that predated it, The Last Broadcast, and that recent Bobcat Goldthwait movie Willow Creek which I thought was incredibly well made given how played out found footage has become.

That's a fair appraisal of it.

I'll check out Willow Creek, cheers!

Wow. Wow. WOW. FUCK YOU.

In a decade movies will be a guy in a Star Wars shirt reading headlines from 5-10 years ago and then spitting your face.
