EvilHomer - 2016-09-22

Maybe it'll be good?

They didn't gender-swap Major Kusanagi, so that's something, at least...?

memedumpster - 2016-09-22

Looks like a Resident Evil sequel, which might be the best case scenario?

Lurchi - 2016-09-22

director is an ad guy whose only previous film was Snow White and the Huntsman

so, nope

memedumpster - 2016-09-22

Hey, that's how Michael Bay got his sta... sorry, Homie.

Lurchi - 2016-09-22

I'm sure it will be at least as good as Aeon Flux

Callamon - 2016-09-22

That really wasn't that bad of an adaption though. Not to say that it should have ever been made...

Born in the RSR - 2016-09-22

Ok, I want to write mountains and oceans of nerdery on the topic of the original Mamoru Oshii adaptation and how different it was to the Manga and the inspiration it gave to the Watchowskis for the Matrix trilogy and just go on and on.

I'll just say I feel you bro.

Also:

I hope Kitano got payed mad money for this, and I don't blame him (he's been in loads of silly crap waaaay before this), I just want the man payed regardless because he's the most interesting man in Japan and there's no way they're not wasting him in this.

StanleyPain - 2016-09-22

If you think THIS looks bad, just wait until we get the inevitable Hollywood Akira remake that, for some reason, people are just desperate to get made no matter what.

EvilHomer - 2016-09-22

Oh, fuck off, SP, don't even joke about that shit.

EvilHomer - 2016-09-22

I'm sorry, I didn;t mean to snap at you, but THAT'S my limit. I usually just brush off nerd-rape-childhood-cliche-whatever stuff, but there are two things I would draw the line at, two things I would not stand for:

Gritty reboot of Calvin & Hobbes, and
Hollywood AKIRA remake

fedex - 2016-09-22

Akira & Hobbes (Leviathan) coming up!

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-09-22

I don't think James Cameron has ever stopped threatening to make a live-action Battle Angel Alita movie, so there's that too.

memedumpster - 2016-09-22

Uh... Cam?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437086/

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-09-22

Great, so when's the live-action Gunsmith Cats coming out?

memedumpster - 2016-09-22

Better not be before Zack Snyder's Project A-Ko!

bawbag - 2016-09-22

Jared Leto as Tetsuo, Shia the beef as Kaneda, directed by Zack Snyder.

bawbag - 2016-09-22

holy shit timing.

memedumpster - 2016-09-22

We all know the name of the devil.

bawbag - 2016-09-22

Last rumour I saw was Justin Lin for the live-action Akira. Horrible.

memedumpster - 2016-09-22

What that's real!?

http://www.slashfilm.com/justin-lin-directing-akira/

Oh no, now the motorcycle in Beyond makes sense, it was practice.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-09-22

I hear that Paul Feig is going to remake Tenchi Muyo and cast a shrieking fat woman as Ryo-Ohki.

bawbag - 2016-09-22

No! Not tenchi whowhatnow! The outrage! I'm spinning up my beyblade right now!

Kid Fenris - 2016-09-22

I'm still waiting for Tim Burton's adaptation of Mai the Psychic Girl!

EvilHomer - 2016-09-22

Tim Burton, I would be fine with him adapting anime.

Also Jhonen Vasquez.

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-09-22

Of course it looks like shit. Everything about the phrase "Hollywood is making a live-action Ghost in the Shell" should have told you that.

Spaceman Africa - 2016-09-22

Maggot Brain - 2016-09-22

It looks just okay. One of my favorite things about anime from the 1980's is that you can tell that there was this fear in the culture that Japan was going to become just like every other crap south-east Asian country, broke and over populated. But the population crashed and now you have a lot shows about growing up in a town that is slowly dying off.

kingarthur - 2016-09-22

Sure, she looks like she could pass for a woman named Motoko Kusanagi.

Sorry to bring that up, but Asian women in Hollywood sooooooo have a point about this shit.

SolRo - 2016-09-23

I really don't care if they used a white (or other race) actress, but not a scrawny shivery twig to represent a badass somewhat buff military cyborg that never flinches.

Simillion - 2016-09-23

diane from bojack is played by a white woman

garcet71283 - 2016-09-23

Apparently there isn't a single female Japanese actress in Hollywood.

kingarthur - 2016-09-23

Does voice acting count as white washing? The character, so long as the voice isn't played as a stereotype still counts as representation as far as their physical attributes are depicted in a cartoon, perhaps. But the idea that an Asian actress lost out on an Asian role to a white woman still kind of smacks of white washing.

I know Lauren Tom is pretty much the only Asian voice actress in Hollywood who gets any work, but there's Asian actors and actresses out there willing to work and their parts are getting eaten up in appealing to white America.

I think Robert Townsend had a pretty clear point about this same sort of thing with tokenism and black actors in Hollywood back in the 80s.
