I was shown a TV special in school when I was 8 that detailed the scientific effects of a nuclear winter. I was also in the last class in the 80s to be trained for nuclear bomb drop drills where we hid under our desks, as if that would do anything to stop us from being incinerated. Throughout my childhood, I pretty much pictured nuclear annihilation as a very strong possibility. I actually was tremendously relieved by the fall of communist Soviet Union era Russia because I no longer had to picture myself walking through rubble towards my inevitable demise.

I don't think too many other kids were that affected by the idea, but for me it was fun to go back and forth imagining scenarios for the end of the world. The one I looked forward to the most was a disease that just wiped out most of humanity, allowing me to run to the woods where I would live with wolves and live in a cabin like Jack London.
