sigh.

let's just call a moratorium on "communications" as a major.

i wonder if we're gonna return to the early 90's in terms of the u.s. govt focusing on white nationalist terrorism. the 70s and 80s were banner years for arab terrorists, and in the late 80s/early 90s white nationalists started to really up the ante domestically, leading to ruby ridge, waco, etc...

will the circle be unbroken?

memedumpster - 2016-10-16

Here is what I immediately wanted to know when I saw this :

The FBI has been caught near constantly randomly picking Muslim young men and doing their absolute goddamnedest to radicalize them to bag an easy statistic, or they go after their families as punishment if the radicalization fails. You know, exactly like how the Taliban does it.

Do they also do this to white people?

Gmork - 2016-10-16

Waco? Are you referring to David Koresh? They were stockpiling illegal weapons for a doomsday prediction, AFAIK. Plenty of innocent yet brainwashed people were burnt alive and suffocated in their own compound. They were decidedly crazy and cultish, but this is the first I've ever heard that they were domestic terrorists.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-10-16

gmork: i agree that waco was by all accounts a gov't fuckup & a tragedy. i was more referring to its use as a clarion call (along w/ruby ridge) of the right, i.e. mcveigh @ okc, eric rudolph, etc. waco specifically is a crystal-clear example of the gov't using excessive force against domestic threats which, at the time, were depicted as terroristic (armed group of religious extremists training with full-auto rifles in buttfuck texas). this is possibly (my own analysis) a reaction to their (the gov't) self-perceived impotence regarding arab/leftist terrorism during the 70s/80s. they couldn't nab ahmed jibril or col. gaddafi, so they went berserk on angry men in combat fatigues a bit closer to home.

meme: as far as white people are concerned, DHS & FBI have *definitely* entrapped white, upper-middle-class environmentalist/anarchists (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_McDavid for a prime example). christian extremists, on the other hand, seem a bit out of their wheelhouse lately. i am, however, reminded of the waning years of hoover's FBI, where something like 90% of the ku klux klan were paid informants and/or moles...

I had heard the average Texan had way more guns per person than the average Branch Dividian.

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-10-17

Fact check: The guns owned by the branch davidians were all legally purchased, and they weren't stockpiling them. They funded their compound by reselling guns, legally, and the guns found by BATF at the scene after the fire were their inventory. If you made your living selling firearms, you'd probably shoot old bottle off the fence for fun too.

Alongside the guns, they also were known locally to sell several different weapons related arts and crafts and novelties. Among these, they sold inert hand grenades (which are completely legal) mounted on plaques with phrases engraved on them. A delivery man discovering these inert hand grenades in a package that broke open was the basis for the warrant that led to the raid.

The decision to storm the compound was based on reports of child abuse, which the BATF denied the second it came to light that no such thing was happening.

So, in a way, it really IS like a lot of the US's problems with Islamic terrorists in that we do a lot to fuel problems by not just leaving innocent (if somewhat nutty) people the fuck alone.

99 times out of 100, the anti-government conspiracy weirdos who pass this stuff around and use it as propaganda have a very skewed interpretation of events (which is putting it lightly), but in the case of Waco... they don't have to make shit up. It was a pretty terrible thing with absolutely no justification behind it.

Gmork - 2016-10-17

Considering all the fucked up things that happened during that incident none of that surprises me.

Monkey Napoleon - 2016-10-17

There *was* some fairly interesting/gross stuff happening with the cult, but it was all technically legal.

Examples:

Koresh wasn't the founder of their group. When he joined, the leader was an elderly woman. Koresh eventually developed a sexual relationship with her and used her favor to gain standing within the Davidians. After she died, he defeated her natural son in a coup for leadership by challenging him to a contest: who could raise a corpse from the dead first. The son went and dug up a corpse from the graveyard, and Koresh called the cops on him. The son was arrested for defiling a corpse, and Koresh became de-facto messiah being the only one of the two not in jail.

There were also rumors that Koresh was impregnating underage girls, but the age of consent in Texas at the time was like 13, and there's no evidence of it.

The ironic thing about the Branch Davidians was they had this thing about strictly following the law to the letter, because they always feared what eventually happened would happen. Some government agency would swoop down on them on some bogus pretext and kill them all. They had regular dealings with local law enforcement (people in the community were always looking for some excuse to get the cops on the weirdos) and were on a friendly, first name basis with most of the police in the area for years.

"The son went and dug up a corpse from the graveyard, and Koresh called the cops on him. The son was arrested for defiling a corpse, and Koresh became de-facto messiah being the only one of the two not in jail."

Oh my god. That's amazing.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2016-10-17

right, they were *depicted* as insurrectionist, and weren't.

i now challenge everyone on poetv to see who can raise a corpse from the dead first.

pastorofmuppets - 2016-10-18

The 70s were a banner decade for white terrorists too. They just weren't white nationalists.

The 2nd Crusade is a good enough album that I'm willing to look the other way on this.

That's three votes Trump can no longer count on.

The Mothership - 2016-10-17

I love it when fuckers like these mopes use crusader language to describe their hateful agenda. It keeps medievalists like me in business.

bawbag - 2016-10-17

The 'deus vult' sloganeering has really taken off again in islamophobe/white nationalist circles of late, along with the requisite crusader kings memes.

memedumpster - 2016-10-17

*has beautiful image of Mothership beating them about the head and neck shouting 'it's pronounced wultus you dumb fucks!'*

The Mothership - 2016-10-17
