This is one of the better FPS this decade.

Best 13 euros I ever spent on Steam.

This looks pretty cool.

SolRo - 2016-11-03

One of the few games that didn't give me buyers remorse after finishing it.

And like all good shooter games, it got one smallish sequel and nothing else...while we're up to battlefield 6 and call of duty 13.

Kabbage - 2016-11-03

Yeah, I was looking into that. I guess MachineGames, who's originally done Riddick: Butcher's Bay, made Wolfenstein with Bethesda and ID, then after that release, Bethesda bought them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MachineGames

So now they're "ZeniMax Sweden AB"... so I think they worked on the new Doom? And I think they're working on the new Prey?

I hope to god they didn't all get scattered to the wind, like so many other small companies do during these huge buyouts.

I just played through this again to get all the nazi gold and such that I missed.

_THIS_ is how you do a modern single-player oriented shooter. Every level should be filled with memorable setpieces like this one was.

The Old Blood was also a very decent semi-sequel.

Gmork - 2016-11-03

Can't gush enough about the awesome level design. There's just something awesome about killing Nazis in a giant castle.

I just downloaded it, seems really good.

Huh! I'm surprised to see all the praise for this one. I played about a third of it and got turned off by the constant cutscenes and mandatory stealth missions. I liked the machismo and shooting arenas, but for a Wolfenstein game it seemed few and far between. Still, when it did happen it was fun -- the first level was particularly exhilarating.

Try the new DOOM game.. Its surprisingly good.
Its totally not my thing, but I admire its design. It really feels like a modern re-imagining of DOOM.
They kept it very simple, you run and jump around and shoot things, you dont reload.
The melee glory kills actually work extremely well, theyre a sort of risk reward thing, and the platforming/ jumping/ manteling is a nice addition to running around.
Even the way the plot is treated is well done, they have the standard space marine shit, of someone talking to you on some tv screen, but the player character doesnt bother listening and just wrecks the screen and goes on with the action.
The one criticism I'd level at it is that though they did a remarkable job in keeping the game very simple and in line with its fast paced arcadey/action roots, they did end up letting a small amount of rpg mechanics seep in: you get stuff based on your performance + can find collectibles that you can use to upgrade your suit + weapons. Though the suit upgrades suck and the weapon upgrades are just for alternate fires, so you could play the game and totally ignore that stuff.

Gmork - 2016-11-03

Mandatory stealth missions? IIRC every stealth encounter in the game is optional, the outcome of ignoring stealth being an alarm sounds and lots of guys rush in.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-11-04

Gmork, that's just what the game wants you to remember! In the parts I played, there are at least two points where all your guns are taken away and you're forced to ninja-knife-kill your way through a convoluted maze before eventually being "rewarded" with an open-arena gun battle. I was playing on a higher difficulty level because I wanted the gun battles to be exciting (which they were!) but this turned the ninja sections into a tedious slog of quickloading. Between that and the endless cinematic interruptions, the game lost all its momentum and bravado. Anyway, that obviously wasn't a dealbreaker for most people here and I'm glad you liked it. I don't play many FPSs in the first place, though, so I just wanted to shoot robonazis and not be interrupted. I also found the upgrade system confusing and pointless.

Mr. Purple Cat, I've heard DOOM is great and it seems more like what I wanted out of Wolfenstein. I'll pick it up on a sale sometime and hope it doesn't BFG my videocard.

Gmork - 2016-11-04

I presume you're talking about the mental institution segment, which does _not_ require you to knife only - you simply start with just a knife. You can run up to the first guard you see without stealth and just stab him in the neck repeatedly and take his gun. Literally the very first guy you run into drops the german assault rifle, and ammo is scattered everywhere.

Same goes for the second "stealth" segment - the first guy you get to drops a gun.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-11-04

I was playing a knife-only mod.

NewHeavenSockman - 2016-11-04

chiming in to say that DOOM is unbelievably well optimized, especially with Vulcun support, so your videocard should be fine if it could run wolfenstein.

new order was good too i guess

Yeah this game bored me.

Everyone loves this opening? To me it was the worst part of every modern Call of Duty game. Cutscene, cutscene, turret sequence, red strawberry jam blocking your view, scripted sequence where you're knocked down by an explosion and forced to crawl with ears ringing, cutscene where "BJ" pontificates about wanting to rest but is forced to keep fighting, turret sequence, cutscene, turret sequence knocked down AGAIN by ear ringing explosion, turret sequence.

Everyone was hailing this thing as a breath of fresh air balls out shooter but I never saw anything that separated it from cutscene heavy modern shooters. I finally quit during a thrilling playable cutscene where you must carry a tray of coffee across a train.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-11-05

The coffee train! That's exactly where I quit too, now that you mention it. I was so bored I forgot all about it. I think a nazi reads your fortune for about twenty minutes before that, too. What were they thinking?

chumbucket - 2016-11-03

Would.

Gmork - 2016-11-04

Bravely rated and reviewed, chocolate jesus.

Chocolate Jesus - 2016-11-05

worry about yourself dude

bawbag - 2016-11-06

This looks pretty good, might get on this after I'm done with my Deus Ex:MD trophy run.

Bonus that the Scottish accent on that NPC is not totally horrible as per the usual videogame standards e.g. AOEII's 'Wheeeel-yam Wah-lass'
