Yeah the end result is that, but the studios could care less because they just made half-a-billion dollars on it.

The rule of thumb they taught us in my film music classes back in college was that film music is generally among the most conservative areas of music, and outside of horror and some science fiction you can assume that film music is 20-30 years behind the cutting edge of whatever style the composer is working in.

Of course that was the late 90s, before modern horror and science fiction had matured to the point where they had really deeply entrenched stylistic conventions (they were already established but nowhere near to the degree they are now) so there were still risks being taken back then.

Really the only places I ever hear even modest risks being taken with score anymore is occasionally in cable TV series, and even then it's not the rule.

It's kind of funny he singles out John Williams scores as a counterexample, though, since John Williams was an extremely conservative composer at his peak, much less now, his style was very much a deliberate return to 1930s and 1940s conventions, he was part of a backlash against the more, to use this video's words, bold and original music that had been increasingly common in mainstream cinema since the Bernard Hermann era, and the reasons it resonated so much weren't that it was trying something new, they were that it was used in actual good films, and that John Williams, while conservative, was also really good at what he did (which was largely a pastiche of Romantic era European orchestral music filtered through 40s and early 50s major studio westerns and adventures) and had a real gift for creating a memorable hook.

Is that what this Every Frame A Painting video is about? Good for him, but I couldn't watch and listen to this shit for long enough to find out.
5 on the assumption that pastor is right.

I think it's worth watching at least a couple of the temp music comparisons -- they're all pretty disturbing.

That said, I think of temp music is probably a symptom of the problem rather than its cause. fedex already said it. Someone built a button that makes half a billion dollars appear, and they're going to keep pressing it until that stops happening.

I'm also not super invested -- I haven't even seen any of the Marvel movies since the 2002 Spider-Man, but it does seem kind of depressing that for all of the money they make, they're not even willing to pretend that it isn't schlock.

I finally watched this. It's good.
