It feels like a fan film. Bateau is way off.

bongoprophet - 2016-11-15

I'll say it: it looks fine. sleepy-voiced pop music cover notwithstanding.

The manga really is the only place to go for deep cyberpunk in the universe anyway. I swear, some of the predictions and imagination in the early stuff eclipses both Gibson and Stephenson.

The movies and most of the series are fine (I found Arise was really good) but sometimes get bogged down in trite anime business.

SolRo - 2016-11-15

I bet right now it's going to be all visual action and stupid melodrama.

American audiences don't have the patience or mental capacity for hard sci-fi, so everything gets dumbed down to Trump voter level.

infinite zest - 2016-11-15

That's actually one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs (as much as I'm pretty 'meh' about Depeche Mode) and I think it fits rather well. It's also nice to remind people that they did some other songs besides Personal Jesus.

As for the movie, I think it looks pretty, but what doesn't these days, and feel that same sense of false hope that I did when I first saw the trailer for Silent Hill: in that movie's case, it was the first VG movie to get a pretty good director (the guy who directed the excellent Brotherhood of the Wolf) and at least the trailer seemed to capture the same bleakness that I loved about the Konami series; a level of psychological fuckedupedness that neither the Resident Evil games or movies could touch.

I'm a big Oshii fan but only casually know the whole GitS mythos, so take my reaction with a grain of salt, but visually this looks pretty astounding, and the universe itself seems about right. But I'm guessing that's about all they get right, and if I followed GitS more into the Manga and sequels and such, I'd probably find a million things wrong here besides little things like casting and whatnot.

>>American audiences don't have the patience or mental capacity for hard sci-fi, so everything gets dumbed down to Trump voter level.

Well, we can't be the sophisticated cultural mecca that Russia is.

If there is one thing America does well, it's art. Are you comparing this movie to other great American Sci-fi films? Yeah, it probably doesn't hold up. Enjoy our chaff.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-11-15

"If there is one thing America does well, it's art."

:/

15th - 2016-11-15

It's true!

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-15

We're good at making it but usually pretty shit at elevating the good stuff.

SolRo - 2016-11-15

Yeah, the most successful American films are simplified good vs evil action schlock only because americans long for complex story telling with unexpected plot developments and abhor the cliché 'happy ending'.

About the only time American cinema manages to make a successful original/interesting film is by copying and dramatizing a famous event.

American movies have grown so generic that not only are the plots copy-pasted between them, the music is too.

And it's only going to get dumber because complex dialogue or humor is hard to translate for the Chinese market, so queue the explosions!

Maggot Brain - 2016-11-15

As much as I don't like that went with this version of Tokyo that geisha robot does look bad ass.

bawbag - 2016-11-15

This looks terribad, 5 for that.

kingarthur - 2016-11-15

Wow. Perfect casting choice for a woman named Motoko Kusanagi.

kingarthur - 2016-11-15

If you really want a white woman for the part, at least get one that seems like she could pull it off. Was Tilda Swinton unavailable?

Hey, at least Takeshi Kitano is getting work.

Also: this looks like a bad live action copy of the first film. Just rent the first two movies. Oshii is a great director when he wants to be.

Nominal - 2016-11-15

I dunno, it's hard getting anyone who can nail dull, expressionless action heroine like ScarJo can.

Bort - 2016-11-15

kingarthur - what's your contribution thing again? I came into a little money and can finally cough up.

Born in the RSR - 2016-11-15

yo Bort!

Bort - 2016-11-15

Thanks!!

kingarthur - 2016-11-15

Thanks, Bort!

I can list a ton of Asian actresses who were better casting decisions all around for Major Kusanagi, but, and this is the reason the studio went with Johansen - none of them have been given the chances in American cinmea to be a household name. Because they're Asian. It's such a racist catch-22 Hollywood finds itself in when it comes to Asians.

Of course, expect that to slowly, slowly change as the Asian market becomes more important to them as an overseas demographic.

BUT, just for fun, off the top of my head: Doona Bae, Tao Okamoto, Ana Tsuchiya, Natasha Bordizzo, etc.

Bort - 2016-11-15

"heroine like ScarJo can."

Bort like ScarJo can too.

godot - 2016-11-15

ScarJo was fine in Under the Skin.

(I haven't seen her comic book films for children)

StanleyPain - 2016-11-15

The visuals look kinda cool (for a brief second you can fantasize that this is a Neuromancer movie come true), but everything else looks stupid as shit.

This is not really an anime/manga that translates well into live action, and especially not when you can't even be bothered to cast a Japanese (or even Asian) actress in the lead role.

But, if we're lucky, this might tank the planned Akira movie that was going to have, like, a 90 percent white cast.

Gmork - 2016-11-15

As long as it's not like the shitty Stand Alone Complex series, I'll watch it. And then I won't be able to tell you the next day whatever the fuck actually happened in it, because Movie.

Maggot Brain - 2016-11-15

At lest in SAC the Katcho wasn't a moody git. "Have you ever seen your own brain? How do you know you even exist?"

Born in the RSR - 2016-11-15

Someone has to make this "point", might as well be me:

The major's body is artificial and, if not mass produced, at least part of a limited series.

In fact, there's a brilliant little scene in the Oshii film where the audience sees a glimpse through a window of the major dressed like an OL . She looks back at the camera and is unnerved, then we see that she's not the Major, it's just some other woman that has the same make and model artificial body, and what unnerved that woman was seeing the actual Major herself looking at her from outside.

Now the Idea of a minority or a member of a colonized culture inhabiting an artificial body that conforms to beauty standards imposed by the dominant culture could be an interesting subject if handled right.
Think of the issue of South-Koreans getting surgery to looks "more western".

I just wanted to play devil's advocate for this whitewashing issue.

All that being said:

This looks like garbage, I never liked Scarel Johanson anyway, I'm glad Kitano's making fat stacks.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-15

^well said

chumbucket - 2016-11-15

She should stick to playing creepy aliens.

An improvement on the original how?

oh boy finally a feature film adaptation of ghost in the shell

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2016-11-15

Equal to anything from Uncle Walt!

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-15

Tonight on The WB:
"Ghost in the shell girls"

garcet71283 - 2016-11-15

In fairness, looks watchable and it will probably make a killing in Asia.

But I'm firmly in the wtf camp about the casting. Apparently there isn't a single English speaking Japanese actress in Hollywood.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-15

Gaijin the Shell.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-15

Venus on the half shell.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2016-11-15

I big part of the appeal of GitS is TitS. Specifically, sexualised non-sexual nudity and the literal fetishisation of the female body. I wonder how much of that they will leave in.

SolRo - 2016-11-15

Also why is she running around visible in an action scene?

Also Also putting lenses in Batou's eyes is a dumb design decision.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-15

Race bending sucks. Fuck this shit.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-11-15

The funniest part of that "controversy" to me is the response from the Japanese themselves. The producers of the original manga gave the casting choice their blessing, meanwhile Japanese fans are all like "What's the problem? Seems perfect!" or "You actually care about the race of the protagonist? Dude, you totally missed the point of GitS."

But I've just come to accept that every movie is going to be accused of race bending/white washing/sexism/body shaming/cultural appropriation/nazism no matter what Hollywood does now. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. It's all good though. I actually find the shitfits people throw over it more entertaining than the films themselves these days.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-11-15

I remember when my little teenage weeaboo friends and I would sit around and talk about how cool it would be if they made X anime into a big budget Hollywood film and it had Y actors as Z characters. Ghost in the Shell was one of them.

We were some stupid kids huh?

In all honesty, this looks okay. It looks pretty close to the source material, right down to the nude building scenes (although unlike in the original film, I doubt we're going to get to see ScarJo's nipples prominently displayed for minutes on end).
