I haven't seen it since a pretty shitty breakup with a girl I probably should've married.. Thanks a lot, jeez.

infinite zest - 2016-11-20

And we'd have these little conversations, something only the two of us understsood, in which 5 simple words like "honey, I'm taking the Vespa" would make us both burst out in laughter.. but this was back in 2003 and I'm getting ahead of mine, and the only way to keep on track is to keep looking due south..

infinite zest - 2016-11-20

sorry, I'm fucking baked, son!

fedex - 2016-11-21

sounds like it's time for another hit

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

what strain are you smoking, you reprobate bastard.

infinite zest - 2016-11-21

The Goji Organic, son! 23.8% THC.. and David Foster Wallace, and this here site.. oy when did this happen to me!?!

bawbag - 2016-11-21

You're a braver man than me IZ, I avoid this site like the plague when I'm baked as it's a fucking total buzzkill.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

Nepalese crossed with OG Kush, you say? Intriguing!

Here, this'll make your day,

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-11-20

I like this one as a fable for young adults. A disturbing amount of people want a relationship like the one seen here, and that's weird. I cried in the theater when I saw it.

That guy - 2016-11-20

Still 5 for this great movie, but, yeah....
Amelie herself is not a way to be a human being.

godot - 2016-11-20

It's less a relationship than a shared fantasy. That's okay, its a start, and its more than most of us have to go on.

The Mothership - 2016-11-20

This movie captured the 'manic pixie dream girl' fad of the late 90s very well. I will admit that I wanted Amelie like the dickens; note the past tense.

That guy - 2016-11-21

It's the girls who somehow wanted Amelie-esque Fate-Magic to happen to them, and so they basically wouldn't tell you how to chase them.... only that it would 'just happen', that's what this movie did.
It selected for the kinds of stalkers who would always 'just run into them', or something like that.

I should hate this fucking movie. heh

fedex - 2016-11-21

really? you cried (in the theater!) because it represented an unrealistic method or goal for people to attain a happy relationship?

fedex - 2016-11-21

or did I just misread, and you cried for the usual reasons one might cry during a film like this?

fedex - 2016-11-21

because it's true, just the first ten minutes of this movie has more tear-inducing moments than most other entire films.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-11-21

I cried, I think, because so many secondary characters in movies turn out so well. Amalie's a pixie dream girl in that she not only finds a boyfriend, who never really registered with me, but who also has an effect on the others around her. When the old grandfather figure shared what was his favorite bit of a roast chicken with the grandkid with whom he had reconnected, I more or less broke down.

glasseye - 2016-11-20

It's a great movie.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-11-20

Eeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh it's a fine film but has never grabbed me like it grabs other people.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

It's terribly overrated.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

Even the people here who claim to love it seem to somewhat admit that it's overrated. It struck a nerve for them back in 2003, but repeat viewings don't bring that same emotion back. It's the type of movie that today makes us realize how shitty our tastes in films were back then, and how pretentious we were. Good God, we'd all agree to gush over any critically praised foreign film to make ourselves feel smart.

Amelie aged worse than Napoleon Dynamite.

That guy - 2016-11-21

NO. IT DID NOT AGE WORSE THAN NAPOLEON DYNAMITE.
NO. IT DID NOT AGE WORSE THAN NAPOLEON DYNAMITE.
NO. IT DID NOT AGE WORSE THAN NAPOLEON DYNAMITE.
NO. IT DID NOT AGE WORSE THAN NAPOLEON DYNAMITE.

When you have stupid thoughts, Cena, just acknowledge them and let them pass.

fedex - 2016-11-21

yeah, what?
Cena, it is NOT overrated.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

Dude, this movie can't hold a candle to Napoleon Dynamite. Have you lost the will to live?

Come on Fedex, get over your boner for the protagonist and admit this thing is just too twee to even exist. It is emotional pornography.

That guy - 2016-11-21

... lost the will to live?

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

I'm sure when she farts it smells like roses, and rather than a period each month, she has a question mark or perhaps even a comma!

Anyway, it's all wine and roses until the screen memories fade and there's some nasty grey Zeta Reticulan holding a speculum with an evil look in his enormous bulbous black eyes.

fedex - 2016-11-21

I changed my mind, I want a hit of whatever O. Wildcat has

bawbag - 2016-11-21

This movie is great fun. I'm not ironically detached enough to hate on this as 'twee' or the like.

Would I rate it as 'best ever'? Nah, but I will still watch it at least once a year.

As for Napoleon Dynamite, the fuck outta here with that buddy comedy MTV-skit dragged out to an excruciating 80+ minutes exercise in one-joke hipster pandering. :P

If you disaffected edgelord hipster types want a less saccharine Tautou vehicle, check out 'À la folie... pas du tout' but don't read any synopses or the like beforehand, trust me it will ruin it.

fedex - 2016-11-21

If you want to know the truth, it's not Tatou that drives me wild (although she's great), it's Mathieu Kassowitz. Him + Jeunet = heaven as far as Im concerned. He made one of the other top 3 in my current standings, Cafe Au Lait (Metisse) in 1993, and if any of this strikes you as too saccharine sweet, you might want to try one of his other films, La Haine (Hate), from 1995 with Vincent Cassel.

I also made a music video for one of my favorite Grace Jones songs from bits and pieces of Cafe Au Lait, two great things that go great together etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDN8tsxLuMw

bawbag - 2016-11-21

La haine is a great movie! I remember going to see it at the time in my local arthouse theatre. Recently purchased it along with the fantastic 'Un prophète'.

fedex - 2016-11-21

You would probably like Metisse/Cafe Au Lait then, it's sort of La Haine "lite"

bawbag - 2016-11-21

Will check it out, cheers for the recommendation!

Also ***** on the Grace vid! She's a treasure!

poorwill - 2016-11-21

Cena Mark is right and nothing else needs to be said.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

If Napoleon Dynamite was a French film, you'd all be gushing over that too. It would no longer be hipster bait, but an artistic absurdist masterwork.
Here's a little reminder from the IMDB Top 250
04. The Dark Knight
77. Amelie

EvilHomer - 2016-11-21

Counterpoint: if Amelie were an overrated superhero film, you'd be gushing about how grittty and awesome it is.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

People here have a horrible taste in movies. It's like they're all following a film snob script.
The Dark Knight isn't overrated. It still lives up to this day. I submitted the true and honest trailer and all the philistines here voted it down. I don't know who submitted all those fake Dark Knight trailers, but it wasn't me.

bawbag - 2016-11-21

'Hamburger with ketchup and fries are the best, how can anybody really like foie gras?'

IMDB top 250 lol. Love ya Cena but c'mon, you're trolling son.

http://www.afi.com/100years/movies10.aspx

bawbag - 2016-11-21

This ought to get your dander up too: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/nov/14/the-dark-knight-my-mo st-overrated-film-christopher-nolan

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

Nolan is likely surrounded by film snobs, and over the years has likely been shamed into thinking his greatest work is overrated.
Burgers vs foi gras. I'd rather have a good burger. Action cinema like burgers can be gourmet or crap.
The AFI vs IMDB is insider vs populist. Again, you're just liking some of these films cause experts tell you to like them. 2001 a Space Odyssey is an incoherent mess of a movie, yet tons of people fool themselves into liking it just to appease some alleged experts.

bawbag - 2016-11-21

"Again, you're just liking some of these films cause experts tell you to like them. 2001 a Space Odyssey is an incoherent mess of a movie, yet tons of people fool themselves into liking it just to appease some alleged experts."

Now you're definitely trolling hahaha nice try Cena, nice try.

FWIW I saw the 70mm cut of 2001 in the TIFF lightbox and it was a religious experience.

bawbag - 2016-11-21

Anyway, LEGO Batman is best Batman.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-21

I am not trolling. I HATE 2001 a Space Odyssey. It's one of my least favorite films ever. All that bullshit that starts with monkey men and ends with some dude becoming a space baby. It's slow, boring, and has hardly any plot. The only real plot is when Dave fights Hal, but once that's over you have to watch his eyes change color for an hour before getting to the big space baby payoff.

bawbag - 2016-11-21

Actual LOL

EvilHomer - 2016-11-21

You're right, Cena, I can't do it. I'll take burgers and Dark Knight over foie gras and Amelie any day. AFI is an establishment echo-chamber, and Nolan is either a victim of peer pressure, an idiot, or just plain wrong. In the eternal battle between Batman and Amelie, there is only one clear winner.

However, burgers and foie gras are clearly less delicious than a decent Hoisin-and-porkbelly sandwich. As such, might it not be possible that BOTH Amelie AND Dark Knight are overrated? That, while Dark Knight is obviously better than Amelie and most of the hipster bullshit that AFI tries to mark for, it still pales in comparison to other, grittier, more awesome films - films like Oldboy, for example, or Sailor Moon S?

EvilHomer - 2016-11-21

2001 was one of the most disappointing films I've ever seen, right up there with Blade Runner and Inglorious Basterds. I don't know if I'd call it worse than Amelie, but it's definitely worse than Dark Knight.

bawbag - 2016-11-21

Tedious.

bawbag - 2016-11-21

'yeah it was/you are'

EvilHomer - 2016-11-21

Yeah, that sure was part of it. Maybe audiences were used to tedium back in the 1970s, but 2001 is in desperate need of Nolan's pacing.

Maybe Nolan could remake 2001? Hell, even Michael Bay could make that dumb film, maybe not good, but at least exciting enough to stay watchable through to the end.

EvilHomer - 2016-11-21

In the spirit of "citing AFI as an authority on anything", here's a scathing review of 2001 by IGN:

http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/2001-a-space-odyssey-sucked- ass.186103062/

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

I'm sorry, but Napoleon Dynamite won me over from the moment he drags the GI Joe behind the school bus. Now Oscar is reviled in the GI Joe Universe for his horrible war crimes against the Joes (the real 12 inch ones, not those crappy 3 inch cartoon things they've foisted off on you poor fuckers) so he could immediately relate to this character.

Amelie, not so much. I think I'd like the movie if the boyfriend at the end was Infinite Zest. Because in real life, it would be. He'd get drunk and set fire to the green grocers shop, while she'd wreck his moped in a terrible multi-vehicle accident and leave him to take the blame.

With that in mind, I can't think of a better recommendation than Woody Allen's "Husbands and Wives". It's the greatest monster movie ever made: watch it and I'm sure you will agree.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-21

I liked 2001 quite a bit but I can appreciate the fact that it's very difficult to do a genre film that breaks out into something more. For my money, Zardoz is pretty close to my ideal Sci Fi movie. I'd also love it if someone who actually read Phil Dick would do a faithful treatment of one of his stories. Preferably "The Divine Invasion". Up to this point, the closest we have is Blade Runner, which is good for a number of reasons but doesn't come close to the actual story. I am told that Phil was called in to doctor the script at the last minute, which explains why it kind of worked even though not a lot of the original story was there.

Maggot Brain - 2016-11-21

Wildcat

Thank you for pointing out the major flaw is this movie. The guy she ends up with at the end is a loser and furthermore the movie doesn't really feel like it's working towards that resolution. Her relationship just kind of happens to her at the end of the movie because movie.

The Mothership - 2016-11-20

This is a great movie.

Maggot Brain - 2016-11-21

There was a time in cinema where all movies were the color of split pea soup.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-11-21

That was before the coming of the Orange and Blue.

15th - 2016-11-21

Haaaaayted it.

chumbucket - 2016-11-21

I remember when I thought these movies were cool. I think my innocence got dumped somewhere off the side off a grimy highway and I'm just so tired of these now.

Adham Nu'man - 2016-11-21

Ok, but nowhere even near as good as City of the Lost Children
