I really don't think he thought he would win. Consider all the shit he didn't really think out, like conflicts of interest with running international businesses while also being the President.

I mean seriously, what the fuck did he think he was going to do, be President of the US during his lunch break? Get his kids to run the businesses while he talks to the leaders of other countries about his businesses?

Being President is kind of an important job. More important than hotels.

Raggamuffin - 2016-11-22

"Suddenly Confronted With the Full Weight of One's Bullshit" would be a worthy POETV tag in my opinion.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-22

From what I heard today on the radio, he's claiming it's actually impossible for him to have conflicts of interest. When asked to elaborate on this magical power, he declined comment.

He's already used the office to promote his businesses, and he's not even in it yet. Filling the swamp?

RomeoGunn - 2016-11-22

I'm really not enjoying this gritty reboot of "The Producers"

Two Jar Slave - 2016-11-23

Give him a break. He's 70 years old. Think you'll be able to learn a new career at 70 years old?

Meerkat - 2016-11-23

No, that's why I wouldn't apply for one.

Xenocide - 2016-11-23

And the stars go to Romeo.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

He definitely didn't think he would win. I don't want to divulge my sources but back in December of 2015 I came as close to hearing directly from Trump himself as any of us are likely to get (one of Trumps more trusted long-term business associates and I share a mutual friend who was privy to the voice mail those most trusted associates got the morning before he announced his campaign last year to explain why Trump would be hard to reach by phone for a while) that he had no expectation or desire to even be in the race by the end of 2015 and it was a marketing stunt. His exact words were "I'm running for president, we're going to blow our brand through the roof, I'll be back in three months.

Point being, I nominate this for new national anthem of United States of Trumpistan:

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-11-23

I've heard it said best that "President Trump" was the joke on absolutely everyone's lips... until the moment it was no longer a joke.

godot - 2016-11-22

The guy who brought me to view 62 million of my fellow citizens with contempt.

To them, I hope (after Mencken) you got what you want, you deserve to get it good and hard.

godot - 2016-11-22

While on the subject of Mencken (not with the angels, either):

ll of us, if we are of reflective habit, like and admire men whose fundamental beliefs differ radically from our own. But when a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental — men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or count himself lost. … All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

kingarthur - 2016-11-23

I think that's a rather misanthropic view of people and democracy and that it discounts the realities of the political system we live under which is not a full democracy but a severely limited one.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-05-14

Miss you, King Arthur!

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

I still can't believe this. It's like some sort of joke. Thanks a lot deplorable, racist, uneducated, dumb as shit, white working class morons. Way to vote against your's and just about everyone but Trump's self interests. Clinton knew what's best for you, but she can't help you when you don't even know what's good for yourself.

godot - 2016-11-22

Clinton was a mediocre politician, but competent, diligent and vetted by some public service. She certainly lacked the intellectual curiousity to question the neoliberal consensus of mainstream economics (which many rank and file Democrats do and Trump capitalized upon). But she wasn't a pathological liar, narcissist, and inept buffoon like the reality show star the electoral college will sullenly march towards.

We got our own Berlusconi. About 0.1% of his constituency understood what this will entail.

Xenocide - 2016-11-23

"Today I would like to assure the American people that I am even more scared than you are. Well, okay, not if you're like a black or a queermo or something, you guys should be goddamn terrified. But you normals, I know you're scared too, but I'm even more scared. I don't know how the fuck I got in this chair. I woke up and I was here, talking to this camera. All I remember about the last two years is a bunch of people in ugly hats screaming my name. You ever wake up from a really good coke binge and you realize you've lost a week and also now you're married? This is basically that. But that doesn't mean you get a divorce. It means you give the wife a job, and then you fire her, and then maybe you rape one or two times, and then you lust after the kid she made with you, and THEN you divorce her.

"So get ready, because I'm in constantly agitated and confused, my decisions are based entirely on which random handful of pills I took most recently, I've aged five years in a week and I hate everything that's happening. And in six weeks, I can tell a Marine to kill whoever I want, and he has to do it. God bless."

EvilHomer - 2016-11-23

"wasn't a pathological liar, narcissist, and inept buffoon"

Are we talking about the same Hillary Rodham Clinton here? The only part of that which is even remotely true is the third one - and that makes things worse, because it means that all the dirt and all the fuckups were done by a fully competent, fully cognizant individual.

"Clinton knew what's best for you, but she can't help you when you don't even know what's good for yourself."

The good news, Cena, is that Mike Pence and Steven Mnuchin know what's good for you. America doesn't know what it needs to Make Itself Great Again, and maybe Trump doesn't either, but you mark my words: paternalism WILL continue to be the governing principle of this glorious republic!

Plus, with Hillary now free of the burdens of civil office, maybe she could go back to pursuing her previous dreams: running WalMart, or heading up the World Bank? The World Bank is a better job than President of the United States (pays more, greater opportunity to abuse one's power), so assuming she doesn't get Trotskied, her fans may still get to see her bring the free world to heel.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

"We got our own Berlusconi."

I don't know, I think trump's more like Brundlefly, except with Ronald Reagan instead of Jeff Goldblum and Rob Ford instead of the fly.

Still not convinced he'll be as bad as Reagan though, if only because he doesn't have the full machinery of the GOP behind him unconditionally, and a lot more people are a lot more informed now than they were under Reagan.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-05-14

No one did.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-22

Now I see why he eschewed teleprompters throughout the campaign.

Accidie - 2016-11-23

Xenocide - 2016-11-23

But doctor, I am Pagliacci.

Cena_mark - 2016-11-23

Don't brag about being unconventional if the only reason you are unconventional is because you suck doing it conventionally.

OxygenThief - 2016-11-23

Well put, Mark.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-11-23

Remember when you were a kid and you and the other kids would get together and play pretend?

Remember how there was always that one kid who would fuck it up by violating all the laws of the pretend universe you were all trying to create because they wanted to be in total control?

"Nuh-uh, you didn't shoot me because I have a force field."

"Cowboys don't have force fields."

"Well I'm a time traveler who went back to cowboy time."

"Nuh-uh! The sea monster didn't eat me because I had a jet pack and flew off the boat."

"But if you didn't get swallowed by the sea monster, you won't get taken to Atlantis with the rest of us."

"I'm going to fly over Atlantis and drop a bomb on it so you all are dead."

This is what happens when that kid never has to truly deal with reality and makes it into the Oval Office.

"I'm gonna make it so businesses don't have so many rules. Then they'll pay their workers better."

"What if they don't want to?"

"Then I'll make 'em."

"The President can't do that."

"Can so!"

"Whatever."

"And I'm gonna cancel our trade deals."

"But then other countries won't buy all the stuff we produce and we won't be able to buy all the stuff they produce."

"We'll produce it here."

"How will you get companies to build factories here? Even if you did, how would you get them to pay their workers decent wages? Even if you did that, wouldn't it make things like cars, cellphones and other stuff really expensive?"

"It's okay, we're all gonna be rich."

"How?"

"I'm gonna make it so we dig up more coal."

"But nobody wants it. Even China is using less of it."

"They'll use it 'cause it's cheaper."

"It's cheap now. People don't like it because it pollutes."

"Nuh-uh! This is CLEAN coal."

"There's no such thing."

"Is so! You can make coal clean."

"But you removed the environmental regulations that force companies to control their pollution. Why would they take steps to make coal cleaner?"

"SHUT UP!"

EvilHomer - 2016-11-23

Speaking of coal, what are your thoughts on Margaret Thatcher?

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

Trump was that kid and Clinton was the kid who just wants to reenact scenes from their favorite movies and gets upset if other kids go off script.

They're both kind of awful but at least you can work with one of them.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

With the "reenacting movies" kid (I assume I'm not the only person who had one of them in their circle of gradeschool friends) at least there's still the shared goal of everyone playing together, even if their idea of fun is jsut doing the same things over and over because "that's how you're supposed to do it."

The other kid doesn't give a shit about anything but having the last word and you just can't have fun with them, even though you know it's not really their fault they got that way because they dad beats the shit out of them.

Meerkat - 2016-11-23

When my dad was 75, he decided to buy a cement mixer and fix up the front porch because it was pulling away from the house.

He futzed around with it and it sat in the garage until it became clear he had developed severe dementia and was no longer even capable of remembering my mom's name. So really, he wasn't fully in control of his faculties even back then, and started doing some really weird shit.

I wonder if The Donald might be heading down the same path...

Hooker - 2016-11-23

This feels like it was directed by Paul Verhoeven.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

Yes.

That observation comes up pretty regularly around here but it has never been more true than this year.

simon666 - 2016-11-23

Promises!

He's frozen and wincing in the headlights of the oncoming responsibility juggernaut.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

He looked like he was going to throw up every time he was on camera on election night. He is almost as fucked as the rest of us and deep down he probably knows it.

kingarthur - 2016-11-23

The tiniest of silver linings: stopping TPP (I'll believe it when it happens) and the five year waiting period on politicians and government employees becoming lobbyists (which really accomplishes nothing other than making it a bit harder for the in-crowd nepotism in DC to function).

Meerkat - 2016-11-23

They'll just find a way around that. Really the problem is campaign financing; kill off the need for politicians to get funding and a lot of problems get dealt with.

As it stands, american politicians belong to the moneyed interests. Because they want that interesting money.

jfcaron_ca - 2016-11-23

The coincidence of two policies that would also make sense for e.g. Bernie or Greens is unfortunately just that: a coincidence. For lefties, leaving TPP is about having the national autonomy to take real action on climate change without having to follow the usual global technocratic trends for short-term growth. For Trumpets, leaving TPP is about having the national autonomy to say "fuck y'all" and burn all the coal.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-23

Uhmm.... We're talking about the TPP, not the Paris Climate Agreement. About the latter, he seems to be changing his stance, one can always hope for a Nixon to China moment here.

About the former, it's an unalloyed good for the American Worker. You don't have to believe it, it's already done. Let's give ShitHead some credit here. He did something good.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

Yeah, you never know. Hell, Nixon was all set to give us universal basic income until the democrats shot it down under pressure from the left because back then expanding the welfare state was a bipartisan, mainstream stance and it was the 1970 version of the "Bernie or Bust" crowd who put on pressure to stop it because they thought that wlfare encouraged"victim mentality."

Funny how roles can change.

Old_Zircon - 2016-11-23

Also, you know, creating the EPA.

For all of his problems, Nixon was Lincoln compared to any Republican president in my lifetime, and on some issues he was left of all the democrats in that time too.

Bort - 2016-11-23

"About the former, it's an unalloyed good for the American Worker. You don't have to believe it, it's already done. Let's give ShitHead some credit here. He did something good."

You believe that because Senator Snakeoil said "NAFTA on steroids" before he'd even read the damn thing. You know how I know Bernie hadn't read it? Because he said that before the TPP was even finalized, and was available for review only under circumstances that made it impossible to analyze.

http://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2015/05/14/40667562 5/a-trade-deal-read-in-secret-by-only-few-or-maybe-none

Of course, the TPP is fully available now; you or I can look at the whole damn thing. And people who have looked at it, who don't have Bernie's particular axe to grind, are not finding that it's a force for evil. If anything it's a confusing mass of regulations intended to address a myriad of niche issues. But sending all our good jobs oveseas ... ? It does not seem to be the case.

But among other things, the TPP cracks down on slave labor and child labor, guarantees minimum wages, and allows private labor unions. Any true progressive would think those are GOOD things.

And when it comes to the Chicken Little objections, they are roughly as plausible as the ACA's "death panels". Like the evil ISDS that, if Twitter is to be trusted, allows foreign investors to rewrite US law, except of course it does nothing of the sort:

http://www.vox.com/2015/11/6/9683852/bernie-sanders-tpp

(Side note, how could the TPP be even worse than Bernie thought, if he'd read the TPP before it was released? Didn't he read it before declaring it was "NAFTA on steroids"? Dude can't even keep his story straight.)

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-23

Bort writes:

" If anything it's a confusing mass of regulations intended to address a myriad of niche issues. "

Yes, that's all we get out of the deal. What they get is access to our market. How strong do you think the regulatory bodies are in these countries, Bort? How about our own?

So why do we do such a lopsided deal? Because, Hegemony you ignoramus! We contain China by establishing preferred trade relations and arming client states immediately adjacent. What do you think that whole business about normalizing relations with Vietnam was about? Sec Def. Ash Carter said of the deal "In fact, you may not expect to hear this from a Secretary of Defense, but in terms of our rebalance in the broadest sense, passing TPP is as important to me as another aircraft carrier"

Hey, Barry plays a mean game of Risk, but it's at the average American worker's expense.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-23

Also: I'll be happy to continue this discussion, but you should know, I have no idea what Bernie Sanders thinks about the TPP. Perhaps we agree? I don't know. I just know what I know from my personal experience. But let's talk about the issue, and not about Bernie Sanders OK?

Bort - 2016-11-24

Sanders' opinion matters because the chain-barking starts with him, or at least he added a lot of weight to the chain-barking. Thus far everything you've said is that the TPP is evil because you know it's evil, but where does that conclusion come from? You've heard it's evil, the only thing people say about the TPP is evil, but where did that start? It sure as hell didn't start with actually looking at the TPP.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-24

Speaking of dogs, you're like one with a bone. Just not gonna give it up. Well you talk about Sanders then, I'll talk about TPP.

So, can we agree that our regulatory system may be wanting? If not now, then perhaps in a years time? Watch this clip again, the President is very clear about what he thinks should be done with regulations. I can't pull your head out of the ground, but I can slap your ass and hope can't I? Watch the clip again, please.

OK, how about the countries we are dealing with? How are their regulatory systems holding up? Not so good, huh? Like, basically, they don't exist at all.

So the deal exchanges a real thing, access to our markets, for a bunch of fake things, unenforceable regulations. BTW, if you think this is such a great deal for American Business, can you explain why the stock market is peaking right now? I'd expect a big drop from having the deal scuttled, wouldn't you?

If we can somehow get past this first argument, I've got more. But to your initial point: this first argument doesn't require reading the document at all. It gets at the reason we do these trade deals to begin with. It has everything to do with national security, and nothing with helping American workers.

EvilHomer - 2016-11-24

Hey Mr Wildcat, Happy Thanksgiving! You too, Bort.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-11-23

Honestly, I don't know how to feel about this. I vacillate between moderate optimism and pure terror. Part of me wants to like this guy. He reminds me of Frank Sinatra. On the other hand, if there's a significant terrorist event, I think he'll declare martial law just to get those pansies at SNL to shut the fuck up, or he may arrange for Alec Baldwin to wake up next to a dead hooker.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-05-14

Oh how I wish I could warn you, 2016 JHM!

Spit Spingola - 2016-11-23

Aside of the "FUCK THE ENVIRONMENT" bits, if he actually makes these things happen, good on him. I just have no confidence in his ability to make these things happen.

I do hope he proves me wrong though.

THIS is who I don' miss! I apologize for the confusion.
