How is it so cheap? Made out of old pinball machines?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-11-26

I suppose it not so expensive to build these. Its just a bunch of straps, metal joints and some motors and cables + a sensors and a little computer.
All that stuff is cheap nowadays.
I would imagine most of the cost of these normally is to pay for the many millions of dollars of R&D work that went into developing them + the software.
If they could scale up production they could be a lot cheaper + in time as the technology matures they also will be cheaper I would imagine.

Much to love here, but stars for the handicapped guy with a cane helping the exoskeleton to walk.

Am I supposed to hate this? Or love this? I don't understand.

FWIW, it looks like something that could become a workaday piece of equipment for, as they point out, pick-and-place kinds of jobs.

Now, whether pick-and-place jobs are going to be available for humans in 10 years is another question. But this thing seems like a robotic back brace of sorts, a concession to the reality of labor in late capitalism. Safety goggles look dorky, too, but you should wear them in the shop.

In 10 years? Yeah. In 40 or 50 years? Maybe not.
