Forced Fun

SH and CAH are two completely different types of game. One starts with a president player choosing a chancellor and the other starts with whomever took the last dump during that day. Well, actually, one could consider those two game openers very similar.

If you're into bluffing games, and I really, really am not into games who's central mechanic is bluffing, then SH is a dream come true. I will give it a plus for its elegant design and quality components, but the Secret Hitler people who dominate Tabletop Simulator, my favorite thing on Steam, are the most annoying people on the planet.

Wow I am completely out of the gaming loop (I got married). Tabletop Simulator? Cool!

Although the all time award for games for boring people goes to fucking Dixit.

The only thing worse than Cards Against Humanity are people who think they are superior for disliking it.

Is this like a hardcore vs casual thing or what? Because both those games are pretty fun intros for people who're not that deep into card/tabletop stuff.

I haven't played it much, but I've always had fun when I did play it. I laughed when I saw the "Beer and Board Games" guys playing it. My family played it during a time when we really needed to just come together and have some laughs. It's amazing what you can learn about the people you think you've known all your life.

They're different types of games entirely from super-intensive hardcore games. Anyone who calls them 'casual' is an edgelord about board and card games. How sad is that?

It *is* a casual card game. The edgelordy-ness comes from thinking "casual" is a derogatory term.

I played CAH once. It was painful.

It's not the casual factor, it's (from plenty of personal experience) the people who play it tending to be totally insufferable. The kind of nerds whose only form of social contact comes from taking wacky improv classes.

Ah so it's more about who you played it with, ok I can totally get that. I've played Catan with some similar people and they managed to straight ruin that for me even though it doesn't have performative elements baked in. I would never play CAH or dixit with those people though, I'd end up knifing somebody.

It's a good game to play with randoms at a gaming café or with family imho, there's not too many rules to explain and it's funny to see grandma drop some absolutely disgusting cards.

that guy, it very much is a 'casual' game. I'm not making a value statement there, but a descriptive one. It's easy to pick up, minimal on rules and rounds last minutes rather than hours.

The forced shock value stuff isn't that fun to me, and the voting/consensus thing is just kinda boring to me.

Catan was a game of its time and great and everything, but it is really pretty unbalanced. If you get road building early on you can usually secure a win. Cities & Knights was an improvement on both balance and added ways to win, but if you're going to play a board game for hours play something cool.
