Better Militaries.

So here's an extra way 2016 hits close to home for me. My favorite local DJ, whom I'd been listening to since 1985, unexpectedly passed away:

Jim Chenot worked at a couple stations, and his specialty was, they'd always carve out some block of air time where he could just play whatever the hell he wanted to. He'd play "Joe's Garage" pretty often, well that's over.

I've found myself listening to "Satellite of Love" fairly often since Jim's passing; it's a song about things you love going out of your life forever. Except it's a song that Jim Chenot introduced me to, so mostly it just kicks me in the ribs.

Lest it sound like I was just a stalker-y fan, I'd cultivated a little bit of a relationship with him -- I'd email him if he played something I really liked, he'd let me know if they were going to put him on at a different time, that sort of thing. I can't quite say we were "friends" but there was at least a little interpersonal connection there.

So, RIP Jim Chenot. I bet you can get front row seats to Frank Zappa where you are now. Hell, the opening band is probably Lou Reed and David Bowie doing a new arrangement of "Satellite of Love", with Jimi Hendrix on guitar and Franz Liszt on keyboard.

This is great but I can't help but wonder why the uploader had to use footage of the monitor rather than the video itself. At the very least move the scotch tape dispenser out of the way...

Zappa seems really jazzed by this.
