Well I'll be god damned.

Processing optimism levels....

One writer wrote the Blade Runner screenplay, and two movies best forgotten.
The other wrote a bunch of shit tv and a few things that no one's seen yet.
Villeneuve is great with visuals, good with ideas and so-so with narrative.
Harrison Ford might phone it in, and Ryan Gosling stars as Ryan Gosling.
Synth wave might be constantly jarring, or fit perfectly.

Optimism level: 4/10, would watch reluctantly.

StanleyPain - 2016-12-19

BR is basically my all-time favorite movie. So, from that biased standpoint, I was pretty critical of any attempt to make a sequel, even if it did have involvement of original crew/cast and such. That said, I have a lot more confidence in this film now than I did before now that the people involved seem to actually be pretty well picked and Ridley Scott supposedly was very hands on with this production. They ditched the embryonic idea of trying to adapt the terrible KW Jeter "Sequel" novels pretty early on, and that was a positive step, and when I read about the efforts they were making at writing a good enough script to attract the right people, I figured maybe it was in earnest. I think it's a mistake to put Ford in the marketing right up front because it's pretty obvious he's not really going to be in the movie much. (production reports say his entire time on-set was something like 3 or 4 days to film only a few minor scenes) But, I'm fairly optimistic it will be pretty cool.

That guy - 2016-12-19

May you be right. If I could boil down my concerns into one, it would be that Villeneuve will not notice the multiple weaknesses in the writers' script, because he'll have a visual idea about those unrecognized weaknesses that excites him.
BUT
it has a higher chance of succeeding than the showrunner of Mr. Robot remaking Metropolis...

fucking yikes

badideasinaction - 2016-12-19

I'd rather them not make it at all, but at least they've got about as good a set of names to make it as any.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-19

I understood that the only reason the first one wasn't a cool looking piece of shit ( like most scifi movies ) is because Phil was brought in at the last minute to doctor the screenplay. I don't doubt it.

StanleyPain - 2016-12-19

Well, the best part is that even if it's terrible, it takes nothing away from the original at least it seems like an honest try rather than some boardroom/Hollywood driven thing of putting it in the hands of Zach Snyder or some shit and turning into a Transformers movie with replicants or something.

That guy - 2016-12-19

Yeah, true. It's not Bad Robot, or a shitty director. Glass is half-full. Adjusting optimism levels.

infinite zest - 2016-12-20

My optimism is set pretty high, but I'm just going with the fact that Sicario was one of the best films I've seen in a long time, and I've seen a lot of movies. So.. mr. director, just do what you did there and you'll be fine.

Nominal - 2016-12-20

The director...haven't seen Sicario yet, but I wanted to like Arrival more than I actually liked it. Good to see a sci-fi movie that didn't cram in pointless action sequences or over the top sentimental shit like Interstellar but...the premise was silly and in the end it was little more than a less disappointing version of Contact.

The producer...last time Ridley Scott was hands on with a revival of his old franchise, we got Prometheus.

The writers...this is what matters. We have Fancher, who hasn't done a single thing before or since the original Bladerunner, and how much of that movie's greatness can be credited to the writing? Didn't someone else come in and polish the script?

Then there's Michael Green. Holy fucking shit. Everwood, Heroes, Smallville, Green Lantern, and SEX IN THE CITY??? They're putting Bladerunner into the hands of the Green Lantern and WB showrunner guy? Dear god.

That guy - 2016-12-21

yeah Nom, that writer was part of my original pessimism

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-12-19

The original is like the film equivalent of a demo-scene demo.

(Its not a good film, but its just sooo coooooool)

duck&cover - 2016-12-19

Bwade Wunner

bawbag - 2016-12-19

Calling it, this will be terrible.

Meerkat - 2016-12-19

* Spoilers Below *

Harrison Ford has had a child with a replicant and is now hunting it because it turned evil.

In the film, he is murdered by the child. The child says "This will hurt me more than it will hurt you. Oh wait, no it won't."

Caminante Nocturno - 2016-12-19

Ford is going to spend his twilight years killing off every single character he ever played.

I'm looking forward to Regarding Henry 2.

duck&cover - 2016-12-19

Brain Damage Boogaloo

Architeuthis Tux - 2016-12-19

I can't wait to see how he kills off Allie Fox, his character from Mosquito Coast.

Adham Nu'man - 2016-12-19

I got excited by Prometheus. Boy did that suck.

Ninehells - 2016-12-20

Yeah, if Prometheus hadn't been a lukewarm tub of shit, I might be more optimistic about this.

garcet71283 - 2016-12-20

I enjoyed Prometheus and am optimistic about this.

Maggot Brain - 2016-12-20

Eat my shit, Said the Movie Industry.

Do Androids Dream of Anything Original

Stopheles - 2016-12-20

Harrison Ford : cool alpha-male roles :: Martin Freeman: beta-male roles

Discuss?

That guy - 2016-12-20

Because you expect them both to be in good stuff but it's almost never the case?

Nominal - 2016-12-20

Ever since seeing the Star Wars audition tapes, I'm constantly imagining how much better Kurt Russel would have been in every iconic Harrison Ford role.
