That is some spooky donut-eating shit right there.

I'll be honest, I've never even made it through season 2 of Twin Peaks and really the only Lynch-directed stuff that had much staying power for me was Blue Velvet and The Elephant man. I should watch Eraserhead again, though, I saw it once when I was maybe 10 or 11 and again when I was in high school and it was pretty solid I think. Wild At Heart seemed good when I was 14 but it really aged badly. Willem DaFoe is great in it and Laura Dern is also good, but everything else feels incredibly try-hard and as much as I love Nic Cage I don't think he was a particularly good casting decision. As a grown up, most of it just plays like something for art school freshmen who smoke a lot of weed.

I don't get all the love for Mulholland Drive, I saw that in the theater and it had one or two good scenes shoehorned into a complete mess, and the fact that it was a rejected pilot that had been reworked with pick up scenes to flesh it out into a feature was painfully obvious, it was just really unbalanced and the whole second half felt rushed and borderline incoherent. The first 20 minutes or so is mostly good from what I remember. The dumpster sequence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzWDzGxqqa0) is excellent and the narrative leading up to it is well done, but I remember after that it just takes a nose dive. I should probably give it a second chance but I just remember it being profoundly disappointing and have never had the slightest interest in sitting through it again.

Everything he's done since then that I've seen has felt like self parody and I honestly wonder if some of it is supposed to be. Now that he's got such a big enough body of work to really make any kind of meaningful assessment of, it seems clear to me that Lynch is a self indulgent edgelord whose occasional moments of absolute brilliance are enough to make up for everything else.

Ok, I take it back. I just watched the dumpster sequence again for the first time since the theater and it's not nearly as good as I remember. I guess it's one of those things that only works the first time. The camerawork and editing is nice but it really is just a cheap jump scare, right down to the little Newgrounds flash game "woosh" when she pops out.

NOBODY will defend the post-Laura plot of Twin Peaks, not even fans. You get to see David Duchovny's television debut in drag and that's about it.

Maybe you'll like Lost Highway? It's like a coherent Muholland Drive.

'The straight story' is great

Hey, if it's half as good as the X-files revival...

...oh god
