I think "The Difference Engine" talked about mechanical computers driving "balsawood bits" on mechanical digital screens as well. Very cool to see someone actually making something like this work.
I borrowed The Difference Engine from the library, like, seven years ago, but I never actually read past the second chapter, a bunch of life stuff happened to interrupt. I keep meaning to give it another try.
