What's more tragic about this scene: the black middle and upper class using this as a condemnation of the black poor or the white middle and upper class doing the same?

SolRo - 2017-01-16

I dunno man, as terrible as both groups are, I just cant absolve the school-dropout-turned-drug-dealer of any and all responsibility just because they had a rough life.

it's that 'shades of gray' thing I have trouble with most of the time.

Cena_mark - 2017-01-17

It's why I hated Bill Cosby even before the rape allegations. I especially hate how white folks use his quotes and similar quotes from other black commentators as a means of hiding their racism behind a black man's words.

Cena_mark - 2017-01-17

Another issue I have with King's legacy is how he's presented as a soft and fuzzy peacenik without any edges that would make Bill O'reilly uncomfortable. Gone are any socialist, revolutionary, or calls for reparatoins. I hate to say it, but I'm beginning to feel that his legacy is a convenient tool for racists. Trump met with MLK the 3rd yesterday.

kingarthur - 2017-01-18

He was at least a democratic socialist by his last two years of life and spoke openly about wealth redistribution. He may have been a full on socialist. I guarantee you, suspicion of that is what got him killed.

Bort - 2017-01-17

I laughed at MLK Jr taking a swipe at Black Entertainment Television. Aaron McGruder never passes up an opportunity to stick it to BET.

But as for the rest, if a white guy portrayed the whole of black America this way, we'd call him a racist for sure. This is not to say "aw man, how come McGruder can get away with it?" This is to say that McGruder is just as wrong for going there.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2017-01-17

This episode won a Peabody Award. The writing is totally brave and I'm glad he went there.

Bort - 2017-01-17

Now THERE'S a surprise.

Old_Zircon - 2017-01-17

I'm with Bort on this one, stuff like this is just a continuation of the popular portrayals of MLK that helped spur the backlash against him in the 80s and 90s.

Let's look at what the real MLK had to say about the the black underclass:

“We must recognize that we can’t solve our problem now until there is a radical redistribution of economic and political power… this means a revolution of values and other things. We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together… you can’t really get rid of one without getting rid of the others… the whole structure of American life must be changed. America is a hypocritical nation and [we] must put [our] own house in order.”

Old_Zircon - 2017-01-17

Maybe the guy in this video is actually LBJ in blackface, that's what he sounds like.

Hazelnut - 2017-01-17

Lot of white guys ganging up on a black guy in this thread. SolRo of course, I knew that before I read the comments, but I'm surprised by some of the other posters here.

Whatever you think of this video clip, McGruder really cares about his own community and is putting a lot of thought and energy (and risk) into expressing what he thinks are its problems. You're really doing a group a huge disservice if you shout down anyone trying to take an honest helpful look at its problems, even people within the community. There's very little McGruder is saying that Obama hasn't said himself (more diplomatically - a President doesn't have the leeway of a cartoonist, unless like Trump he's a cartoon himself).

Bort - 2017-01-17

Here's the thing, though. Those scenes McGruder is showing of a whole bunch of black people partying like idiots ... ? That is an image that a lot of people take as representative of blacks as a whole, and maybe it's not a good idea to promote that image. There are a hell of a lot of educated, professional, well-rounded blacks here in America, and unfortunately they go largely unseen. You'd think one or two of them would have shown up to listen to MLK Jr, and yet that's not what McGruder is showing.

I'm just not seeing "an honest helpful look" here.

memedumpster - 2017-01-17

Hey, fellow white people, 2017 is upon us and there's some things we need to try and do better this year, because 2016 was bad. Like, real bad.

1.) Black people have individual agency and are not your pets. By keeping them as your lap-dogs of cherished oppression, you're as bad as the other white people who want to put them all down. It should have been a red flag when you determined that they are not allowed to talk to each other about their own race, showing that you're racist as fuck authoritarian over them and don't see them as humans like yourselves.

2.) See 1, but in regards to Jews.

3.) A socialist state is bullshit and always has been. Social programs are good, but only from a foundation of ensuring equality and not dictating morality excused inequality with legislature. Wheelchair ramps, good. Blaming two legged people for oppressing the handicapped and barring them from stores unless they break their own legs, bad.

4.) Aaron McGruder is black, and so will have opinions about issues facing black people. His people. People he talks to like people. He is not your pet to be newspapered with a resounding "bad dog" for barking at what you see as your more docile pets.

5.) MLK was a person who had weaknesses and strengths just like everyone else. He is not a categorical Joseph Campbell style mythological gestalt who needs you to properly scribe tradition. If Aaron McGruder was white talking to white people with a Plato cartoon, you'd call this episode the classical Greek Dialog Form of storytelling, but he's black, so it's a bad dog pooping on your carpet and ruining your Holy Historical Marxist Dialectic. You're all racist as fuck against black people.

6.) Let 2017 be the year you finally love black people enough to let them go and be humans too.

7.) Also, the Jews.

Hey hazel, you're a dumb cracker that can't even read

Bort - 2017-01-17

meme - the black people I talk to are confused by Uncle Ruckus and suspect he's on the show as a mouthpiece for racists who otherwise wouldn't enjoy the show. I doubt that's the intention, but the point is, "The Boondocks" is not universally beloved by blacks down to its last molecule. This show doesn't can't do no wrong.

Bort - 2017-01-17

... doesn't CAN do no wrong. Too many negatives. I blame you.

kingarthur - 2017-01-18

ALso, meme, you seem to have a really poor understanding of socialism and Marxism. Might I recommend Richard D. Wolff's free introductory courses on Marxian economics? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wkO3qsZY_U That's just where it starts, there are four classes divided into multiple parts.

Might I also recommend a good introductory look at Marxism and even Leninism that is unbiased and even fair? Paul D'Amato wrote one. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/meaning-of-marxism-paul-damato/110 0400697?ean=9781608462506

I"d also like to point you in the direction of direct socialist action being gendered up for today, also courtesy of Richard D. Wolff. Maybe you're familiar with the Democracy at Work project? http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/democracy-at-work-richard-d-wolff/ 1111326272?ean=9781608462476

There's also lovely introductory books on leading socialist luminaries, such as this one on Rosa Luxembourg. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/red-rosa-kate-evans/1121791622?ean =9781784780999
