I read the original comic this is based on at my local library (the whole Three Kingdoms collected edition - if this movie gets a sequel, Azathoth'll show up) and it wasn't terrible.

Most or all characters intruduced from 0:40 onward are new to the film.

The film missed a trick by not having Garrett Morris in the cast. The man thought an invisible hypnotist robot controlled his every action. He's the only original SNL castmember who's seen visions nightmarish enough for a Lovecraft connection to be credible.

Norm of the North's problems were largely based around incongruent internal messaging. Being dependent upon an app to observe public sentiment around being able to build condos in the Arctic is just not terribly exciting.
